I have to go home for a couple of hours to be in for a delivery. My horse has to stay in for the duration. I've overslept, and my mare has had an unsettled night so the stable's a disgrace, so what is my priority?
Does my mare stand in her own muck for a further hour or so, but has clean water and fresh hay, or does she get fed and her stable tidied up a bit and make do with six of inches of hay strewn water and the remains of last night's haynet?
I believe that fresh forage and water come higher on the list of priorities than sorting out a dirty stable, (though obviously I wouldn't want my mare standing in wet and dirty straw for any longer than she had to), but some people disagree!
Luckily the above scenario is made up, but it conceivably could happen, so what do you think?
