I posted pics of Dizz because people had asked for them.

Practically all the pics of Dizz show her overbent. She just does it. Don't know why, but trying to get her to lift her head. It's not all the time, but it does happen (young/unbalanced/not moving forward enough - don't know, but we're trying to get it right!). She doesn't seem at all bothered by it. Physio says she will outgrow it with time and work.

Now bear in mind, just like other people with their horses, how much time, money and effort I put into this horse, because I love her and I want the best for her.

Someone has said she looks strapped down and as though she is Rolkur!!! Anyone who has ever read any of my comments on Rolkur knows that I think it is totally wrong and evil incarnate. They said 'poor pony' - apart from the fact that she is a stonking big horse, she is certainly not 'poor' in any way, shape or form!

Trying not to let this get to me, but I do not want any one to ever think or suggest that I would do something like that to my horse! For gawds sake, the most she has ever had is a running martingale and I am trying to get away from using that! She does wear a competition breastplate, but that is for my benefit and does her no harm whatsoever, and it certainly does not strap her down!

Everyone that reads your post's will know how much you love the Dizzy one!! So what one person say's is niether here nor there!!! We know you love Dizz, and Dizz knows you love her so don't listen!!

Have a big hot chocolate with all the trimmings.
 
ah mrsmozart, you should know by now everyone is an expert on everything and knows your horse and training practises better than you do yourself...

you did say on your post on monday she has never been ridden in such a manner, but it is easy for folks to critise when thye don't know you/horse/the full picture.

oh mrs m just ignore them :) like you say you hate rolkur and that there are reasons as to why she does it, taz does it to evade the bit all the time when he doesnt want to work just tell them to take a long walk of a short peir :D
 
Ignore the troll. Everyone knows how much you love Dizz, she's just a big gangly baby who is still finding her feet and learning to balance herself properly.

If it wasn't for being concerned that she might chuck you off I'd let you ride Lil any day and would certainly have you let you play with D.

I'll be willing to bet said person is too scared to ride their own horse, probably just grooms it lots and flaps tarps at it.

Yes she is overbent, but she definitely is not forced into that position.

i wonder how to get her to unbend? does she work from behind? can you push her into the contact? hmm....

SA - ta hun, just thougth the person in question had seen enough of Dizz/me to know otherwise :(. Ah well. :)

PP - nope, never ridden with nothing other than reins and a standing martingale since I've had her; can't imagine that she would have put up with anything else before I got her either! I will check with previous owner who had her backed though. I can't use draw reins! And I don't need them! And sure as air, don't ever, ever want to force a horse into that position :o :(

Seriously, don't let the comments get you down, I think its safe to say you and Dizzy one are not at grand prix dressage level and using rolkur as part or your warm up routine!

Just looked at your pictures/comment and let out a little chuckle. OH used to train a potty little mare who used to overbend so much that she touched her chin on her chest and as a result there was always loads of dribble on her chest after work. Nobody wanted her to do it but she was nuts............lovely, exeptionally talanted........but definitely loopy.

Mind you, this is the continent so nobody minds Rollkur ;)

I do think blow-drying manes is a bit cruel though :D
 
Oh *******s to them!! :mad: I am always concerned about how little you care about Dizzy.....you should send her to me immediately.

JT - thank you :) She seems to just play, and as we've had the head flapping about thing for a while now (I know! Bad me :(), it's just what she's always done.

AD - ta hun :D The thought is much appreciated (admittedly I don't bounce as well as I used to, which is surprising will all this blubber! :o). Lol, no idea about the flaps or tarps... lol.

CC - she is indeed ginger lol, in so many ways :D. Ta hun. Working on trying to push her forward, but she's suddenly gone very quick off the leg (other than today! Teeth!), and is learning that forward encouragement does not necessarily mean go faster! She's grown and changed shape so much that she's having to learn to balance every few weeks. She's less balanced in the canter in the school than the ex-race horse who came off the track in January! We'll get there though :D.
 
Bah, dont listen to them. My boy used to do that as he was alwas ridden in a 3 ring gag. I changed to a lose ring french snaffle and he stopped it - but he was leaning. He still totally pulls his nose into his cheat when he is showing off or out on hacks. Even with lose reins. Some horses are just like that eh......comment was prob from someone who has only ever seen giraffee horses.
 
K - burnt my toast!!! That would have been on the news my lovely :D. And what d'ya mean, not at Grand Prix level....???? Roflmao. We're not even at the Walk and Trot level us :D

S - yup, she likes to put her chin on her chest, and yup, definately talented and a little loopy :D. And she likes her mane blow dried! You'll be pleased to know however, that I refused to put curlers in... :D

MZ - okay hun, if I can find an envelope big enough... :D As to your 'deep and round' - I can lend you some :D :D

WT - thank you :). She can do Giraffe (and Spring Lamb and Stubborn Mule and Sleepy Head, sometimes all at once :D). Daft flipping mare! :D
 
Just been & had a look at your pictures - what I would say is yes she is a little overbent but you're well aware of it & have admitted you have a long way to go, I think once you get her off her forehand a bit & working from behind that will improve anyway & as I think someone else said you can't do it all in one go, she's just a baby!
Take no notice - everyone knows that you love Dizzy & she has a great life with you & is by no means forced & strapped down.
FWIW, I think you're doing great & all the hard work is paying off! :D
 
The other thing about your photo's is that they show you with very fixed hands, almost resting below the pommel. You might find, if you can try to bend your elbows and relax your arms, lifting your hands up a little, that you will encourage your mare to lift her head and relax a little and not be so overbent.

It's a long hard road & I've had allsorts to try to work thro with my boy - the worst of it is he's 9 now & we're still having issues!!!!! We seem to bottom one thing & 10 other problems rear up!!!! You're doing better than we are so well done & go Dizzy!

Oh, also, I can concur using your head to cushion your fall isn't the wisest move so I feel your pain!!!!! :D

People love to criticise. You've been on here long enough to know some have a good idea what they're on about and lots are talking out their ar .. backsides

This photo of my baby pony has been commented on for the pony having apparently been worked in draw reins and my daughter forcing her into a shape. In actual fact that's the way the pony goes, she was newly backed and that was my daughter's first time on her since then. She'd been told to keep a very light contact and sit very quiet, legs off. Bearing in mind that the second to last time she'd been on her she'd been forcibly ejected by a broncing fit she was going to do exactly that. The last time she'd been on her was immediately after that when she'd got on, walked round, praised the pony greatly to make sure she finished on a high note and we'd then turned her away and called in a professional to restart her to make sure the job was done properly, which it was, very calmly and quietly and with no resort to gadgets at all. She'd never even been lunged in sidereins.

The end result of this session was a calm happy pony and a beaming daughter who'd got up confidence to trot her and was absolutely over the moon with the quality of the trot.


If anyone on this forum wants to comment on my picture feel free - but I'm well aware that the pony was happy and being ridden according to her stage of training, my daughter was happy and confident and the guy who broke the pony was pleased with the way she was being ridden. She has gone on to be a cracking little competition pony, still never been ridden in drawreins, usually in the 70%s and second individual at Lincoln last year. Oh and that's her jumping in her first PN in my sig.
 
There is hope to get her more out to the contact. My horse used to go like that, and some do either by choice of way of training. This is my horse 18 months ago:

he is still a long way of perfection but as you can see the difference in his muscle developement is amazing. It has taken a lot of work and self discapline to almost forget the front end.
 
My old mare used to overbend as a youngster, especially hacking out as a youngster when she was a bit tense. Trouble was I had to stike the balance between having a light contact for sensible safety reasons and encouraging her to stretch her frame forward. Inevitably I looked as if I was reeling her head in.
As she matured and relaxed and we progressed with her education, the concertina look (so embarrassing! With little tense strides too) disappeared.

I actually went through a phase on my horse where I had to ride him even deeper and rounder than that to get him 'to' the contact as he was never on the end of the rein, always behind it.

She is interesting to ride... the head issue has been going on for a while, but as said before, we thought she had the right bit, etc. Ah well. Anyhoo, it's put us back schooling wise, especially after effectively losing last year, and a good portion of this year (I've only just started cantering her again; I could canter others, but not her - definately do not bounce on one's head!).We will get there, just going to take a while :).
