I am just tired of this.

You see I have experience of Safecobs that if I posted would get the thread removed.....

It's so hard Benson, I have just bought 3 unsuitable ponies in a row for my daughter so I don't know why I'm posting advice really!
 
Thats the problem,how do you know if a dealer is good or bad if we are not allowed to talk about it on here!!!!!
 
Benson - hang on in there. When my beloved boy Mickey died unexpectedly, I didnt think I wanted another horse, but eventually decided to start looking as when I really thought about it, I couldnt imagine being without one. It took me 6 months and 23 horses (+ about 3000 miles of travelling) to find Ellie, but she was worth the wait - even if she was actually only 10 minutes up the road. Sod's law!!! You will know when you find the right one xx
 
Yes I loved the grey too;if I bought him would clip him out as soon as I got him home and he would look very very smart!
 
I simply stick up 'WANTED' posters in my local tack shops, feed merchants, yards and also tell local instructors, farriers and vets that I am looking. That way one gets to find a local horse that is normally not on the market and you can try out several times and locals will know it's true temprement and history. Works every time for me.
 
Hi there. I have rad some of your posts and just wanted to say keep looking and you will find the right horse. We looked for ages for a horse for my OH, said we would only look locally but ended up spending many weekends driving around the country looking at unsuitable horses. Eventually went to see one 6 miles down the road who is perfect, we have owned her for just over a year and my OH loves her. We kept in contact with the previous owners and are now good friends.

Just thought I would tell you a story with a happy ending to try and keep you optimistic, the right horse is out there somewhere!

I recommend patsy at Stubley Hollow too - thats where Hovis is from.
One note of caution - her horses do tend to be on the younger side BUT if you are honest with Patsy she will be brutally honest with you - on everything from weight to ability. I didn't go to look at Hovis but Patsy didn't think the other horse and i matched - I agreed.
2.5 years on Hovis is a total star and i have been offered utterly stupid money for him. He everything people want and they are willing to pay for it. He's not however for sale!
She's worth a chat anyway.Good luck with your hunt. The right one is out there!
 
Thank you all so much for your support and suggestions of different horses, we have found one we are desperate to go and see but because of previous appointments we cant get there til 2 weeks time, and he is bound to be gone by then! I think maybe I am just having a woe is me day!!!!

Sorry I haven't any suggestions but I just wanted to share our story.
Several years ago we were looking for a horse for a novice rugby-playing OH to share with me, having lost my hacking confidence on a loopy TBx. We travelled the length of the M62 corridor from Liverpool to Hull, looking at some very unsuitable animals. We eventually found one at a local riding school, who hadn't been advertised but was mentioned to us by a neighbour. We hacked her home. I'm sure the right horse will find you before too long.
 
My friend has the most fantastic horse. He's an 18hh Clydesdale. He is a gentle giant, can be ridden holding the buckle of the reins, has the most lovely character, and can be ridden by complete novices. He would def carry 17 stone, and some! Not sure if you've thought of one of these larger breeds, but he really is a fantastic horse. Oh and I think she paid £500 for him! She got him from Newcastle - not sure if there's a Clydesdale breeder up there? I think she said there's quite a few Clydesdale breeders in Scotland. He does eat a fair amount of feed mind, and his feet need shoes which are the same size as dinner plates :)

I think sometimes you can almost look too hard for a horse, I'm a great believer in being patient and the right horse will find you!

The last couple of times I've gone to buy a horse I've been prepared to drive round the country and had videos sent from Scotland and both times I found the ideal horse less than ten miles away.

I like the strawberry roan mare too!

I agree. When we were looking for a new horse for OH and me....both well large and heavy we travelled miles and after I got bucked off one we just gave up. All our horses have always "found" us so I thought it will again. After a few weeks spoke to Insurance Broker I deal with down south. He told me of perfect horse. Went and looked....rode him in the field...what a nightmare. Was like a riding school horse but v smart.....but what hard work to ride. Vendor said take him for a hack. OH just wanted to go home!! I said we haven't driven almost 3 hours to go home so we will. Out on a hack brilliant....we jumped ditches and a hunt jump off the road. As we drove home all we discussed was how much to offer did not have to even think about whether we wanted him. To make things better we got him for £2750 and they wanted £4750. He is a perfect hunter and just what we wanted. He is Irish Draught. I know after all you have been through you are eager for a new boy....but trust me.....one will come along.
 
We have got our eye on one, but obviously cant get there til the weekend. if that one doesnt work out, I think we will just wait and let the horse find us.
That was the way it happened with Benson. We decided on the sunday that we were gonna get a horse on loan, went into our local tack shop and said to the woman behind the counter that that was our plan, and she just produced a piccy of benson and said 'what about this one'. Bensons owner, tammy, had literally taken the pic of him in that morning so it hadnt been put up on the board. We saw Benson on the tuesday, and fell head over heels in love with him, and that was that!!!!! so, hopefully our luck will strike twice, we will never find another benson, but maybe we will be as lucky again.
