I am moving to Carmarthen for a job but i've never even been to the area. So if anybody lives nearby please give me as much info on the area as possible.

Any good livery yards/any to avoid or areas for that matter? Most important things for livery for me is lots of turnout, good hacking on not too busy roads, hopefully a school and must not be too restrictive on open and closing times.
Any good tack and feed shops or should I load up on products before I leave?
Any good show facilities and even more important/unlikely where is the nearest XC schooling facilities?
Any good Dressage and Jump instructors in the area for slightly more advanced riders?

Thanks in advance Carmarthen folk :)

Will you actually be Carmarthen town or one of the outlying villages? Im about 20 miles from Carmarthen so a bit out of your area, but i do have a friend who live not far from there & shes managed to get lovely hacking where she is (she is out towards Llandeilo). In Carmarthen youve got the big feed stores by McDonalds which are pretty good & also Countrywide in Johnstown m(they do alot of tack as well as feed). For tack etc there is also the Equine shop towards Crosshands.
The college quite often have things going on there, but there are plenty of shows going on over the summer at various places, also if you dont mind traveling Cel Aeron have quite alot of jumping & dressage going on through the year. I think there are quite a few XC courses you can hire (Cel Aeron have one), there are 2 over my way, but im sure there will be one closer to Carms that you can hire. There is a girl called Emma Wilson who posts on FB who is meant to be a good freelance riding instructor.....i cant help on recommendations of yards as its not really my area.
Good luck with the move & hope you like it up here :)

This may be useful:

Sarahrees and Mrogers on here are both from that area and compete a lot in various spheres, (dressage, jumping, showing etc) get in touch with them and they can probably give you the low down on quite a lot - I am well out of the loop there now. :(

Carms and Pembrokeshire are pretty horsey areas so there are LOADS of shows and tack/feed shops etc. Where abouts exactly are you going to live - easier to reccomend then.
It is a farming area so ther is turnout galore pretty much everywhere and loads of private x-country jumps etc so easy enough to find somewhere to go.

Poppets Sands and Pendine sands are great for beach riding and not restricted long long flat sands for a lovely gallop!
I am in Pembrokeshire on the border with Carmarthanshire we absolutely love it

Thanks for all of the messages guys!!!

I was just offered the job today so haven't been able to figure out where exactly I am going to live. I will be working on the Cillefwr Industrial Estate so hopefully somewhere within a 15 minute drive and then hopefully I can find somewhere for my horse nearby or find a good yard and then find somewhere to live. Ive found a yard and a possible house near Llansteffan.

Completely forgot about farrier, dentist and vet. Vet wise then Cotts farm is better? I only like using equine specific vets, its my thinking that if your a vet only ever look at horses you are a bit more fine tuned and experienced with horse veterinary needs rather than doing a bit of everything.

Cotts are a specialist equine vet however Market Hall in St Clears have 2 specialist horse vets and can deal with most things and have dealt with routine jabs cuts and knocks as well as foot abcess for me and their call out is £17 a visit a lot less than Cotts ,They are very helpful and knowledgable
They will refer anything they can't deal with straight away.
Good luck with the move

http://www.cottsequine.co.uk/html/practice.htmlthis is there web site
Last year they ran a series of evening lectures on horse topics which were very good .
I believe they are doing it again this yearI seem to remember they started end of October and were once every week..
They have fabulous facilities and I have used them having been refered from Market Hall
Just find that for routine stuff it is much cheaper to use a general farm/ equine vet who I have to say refer as soon as they feel they can't deal wih the problem.

Agree with everyone about Market Hall - they're fab! A few years ago my tb puntured his knee cap, joint fluid leaking etc... They did a great job, flushed it out, loads of visits to make sure it was ok - cost me £90 total!!

Second Pendine Sands as fab beach (taking people on beach rides there used to be my job :p), and also Pembrey country park is fab - 400 acres of woodland on sand tracks and then straight onto Cefn Sidan beach.... heaven!

Agree on dentist (Charles)

Have to say Carms/Pembs not as horsey (competition wise) as where I am now, but I know for certain that I will move back one day - I miss it so much!

Thanks so much for your help guys. I am actually going to visit the area tomorrow and you have all made me feel better about it. Sorry to admit I was thinking it was going to be like a section a stud to run where all of the horses are out and left to their own defenses (I'm sure thats really not the case and there is nothing wrong with that) Ive been a bit naive.

Anyways Ive found a few places to look at one is a room and livery at the same place in Drefach which sounds great but the room is quite expensive.
A livery yard in llansteffan but the house that was near by isnt available for a month after I need to move down, its good price but its a bit further away from work (but they can do horses in the morning) and they dont have a school (not so great for my cold backed horse).
The Welsh Equestrian Center does anybody have any experience of this place??? They have the facilities (but they look a tad run down in some pics Ive seen), the price is right for grass livery (with run in) and its not too far from the city so I could live in the city and drive out to there.
I also have a houses to look at in Bronwydd and Cynwyl Elfed, does anybody know of any Livery/small private yards in that area.

Im also going to take a visit to Country Wide and Valiant Saddlery they may have some more info for me.

Thanks Guys

Ouch maybe not Valiant Saddlery I didnt realise it was that far, Im not sure if ill have time to fit it in with having my farrier out in the morning and a 3hr trek to Carmarthen from Oxford.

from the city so I could live in the city and drive out to there.

I dont know of any yards over that way, but to be honest i would have thought the riding was a bit pants...though im prepared to be corrected on this. If you are working in Carmarthen i would think you could consider looking in places like Pencader to rent, possibly a bit further than Cynwyl Elfed, but much much better roads to travel on every day (the road from Cynwyl to Carmarthen is horrible), also you wouldnt be far from Llanllwni where i do believe there are a few places doing livery & you would have access to the mountain riding which would be better. Food for thought :)

Lol its ok, understandable if youve never been...i didnt realise :) If youve never been then i would definitely consider what i said about looking for something, i wouldnt go out on the Cynwyl road it really is a horrible road, really twisty & not really anywhere to overtake if you get stuck behind an old granny...or a tourist, which is highly likely.
Here some houses for you if you havnt already seen them:
In Carmarthen.
