[ QUOTE ]
As far as we know, the muck heap burst into flames, which was a few metres behind the double doors to the storeroom. The wind was really strong, and blowing in a direction where a spark from the muck heap would have blown towards the storeroom. We thought it was a longshot that it could have happened, but the loss adjustor said that it is very common for muck heaps to spontaneously combust. Apparently those green compost bins that the councils were giving out a few years ago are very prone to causing fires too, because of the heat the fermentation generates. The muck heap will NEVER be that close to a building again.

This happened to my old boss, but unfortunately his horses didn't make it.

Like you say, a lot of people don't realise this can happen. It sounds as though you were lucky, although it probably doesn't seem that way. Good luck with the rebuild and keep positive.

Good point Weezy.
Bounty - Please write to H&H! My Dad is half way through building a muck heap right next to my stables. I have said it is a fire risk but he insists on putting it there. Please warn everyone of the dangers. There must be lots of people with the muck heap close to the stables for ease of mucking out. If they saw your pictures, they will surely move them asap!

So sorry to hear this Bounty, but echo everyone else above when I say I'm so glad no person or animal was injured.

Even looking at your devastating photos just now brought tears to my eyes, I have an unreasonable fear of fire anyway (even to being uncomfortable in a house with an open fire).

Just hope the insurance company continues as well as they have started for you.

Thinking of you.
