From asda:eek: to see how the dogs would like them as a treat........must say I was and still am aprehensive for any bone blockage, but the 2 thats ate them seem ok:D

I intialy got 2, for the akita and deerhound as a meal to replace last nights kibble meal.

The akita ravaged hers in less than 5 mins:eek: *guarding* it like a wolf from the 2 cats who where homing in to take her on:D:D
The deerhound was disgusted:rolleyes: so he got his kibble, and the cats ran off with his and began tearing it apart in the garden:eek::D:D
Meanwhile Tia (blood thirsty lurcher) and rufus where frantically trying to crawl under a 2cm gap to get into deerhound kennel to steal the drum stick.

I gave the rest ago to see how they would like it, I could not let them have it as only 1 drum between 6 was not gonna work, and I knew I could not let them eat the raw and then their kibble, they all proceeded to grab and run off with it, but I retrieved it and finally gave it to the Bud the wirey pointer as he has to eat meat anyway because of his condition, he ate his faster than the akita:eek:

Im going to allow them a once a month turkey drum stick treat.:D
I think little whipster will have to have a little drum stick, she could barely carry the big one:p

I'm still not brave enough to go down the turkey drum stick route, Evie inhales food so would be worried she wouldn't chew them properly. Evie and Buffy do have chicken wings a couple of times a week, don't give them Saffy as she has a tendency to blockages anyway. Evie copes fine but this week Buffy has been straining a lot and along with bone pieces, which I know is normal, her motions were a bit bloody. Would be interested if raw people could tell me if this is normal ( sorry for slight hijack but I reckon they will look at this thread :D)

See MM I am more comfy feeding the bigger bones as I would worry my lot would wolf the smaller ones down without chewing, where as with the turkey one it was a huge thick bone so they had to grind and chew it right down.
I would think it normal for them to pass the bits of bones in the pooper:D but the blood tends to suggest some inflammation? I would be interested to know if that is normal with raw too? *cayla* goe to inspect bubba and buds ****.
Bud did **** this morning and it looked ok, not sure it the raw takes longer to digest though so maybe that was not from that meal.

Im worrying a bit now:o:p

Generally I would agree about bigger bones, but madam will swallow a huge hunk of tripe whole and then puke it back up and not sure if she would achieve that with drumsticks.
They have been having the wings for quite a while and this is the first time this has happened so don't worry, Buffy is a bit of a law unto herself with all things to do with her health.

I checked for poopoos when I fed them and nothing yet, bubba msut have crapped on her walk and I never took notice and she wont pooh in her kennel so will have to wait till next walk later on.

*stops* worrying for a little while:D

I suppose if Evie did wolf down a big chunk that she did not chew right down u would stress till she shot it out:eek::D it does make u a little paranoid doesn't it? :o

I'm sure they will all be fine!:D

My two regularly have chicken wings and drumsticks as well as turkey drumsticks, whole fish, and all sorts of fresh bones from the butchers - lamb, pork and beef - and *touches wood* never had a problem yet. It never ceases to amaze me the speed they manage to get through a fresh bone but after Sweeps last check up the vet was really pleased with his teeth - never had dental work and no doggy breath - owned up to feeding raw as well as SKinners and she was well pleased - in fact she encourages it.:D

Cayla finally! Yes cats love raw and do very well on it, but they can help themselves most of the time and supplement their diet all by themselves with cute little wild things! Got a friends cat on it a few years ago now, he liked his raw so much he discovered how to open the fridge all by himself a side effect was he no longer had to have his steroid injection and monthly vet visit!

MM I wouldn't worry too much mine hardly ever chew small bones ! Chicken carcasses are usually swallowed after a few bites, one of my sisters Husky's will virtually swallow a chicken carcass whole, it is a bit scary at first! I have to unfold chicken wings for Digger as he will swallow them quite fast and folded up they are quite square and can stick in the throat with dogs that eat fast.

Very firm stools are normal after a largely bone meal and mine will sometimes bring it back up if they have eaten it too fast, but I have never seen blood, though the firm stools do empty the anal sacks.

Yeah! another vet on board, slowly but surely!

I think I mainly did it to clean their teeth as a preventitive to stave off any later dentals, and I did feel better seeing how much they enjoyed it, esp the cats there where like ravenous beasts:eek:
I think the whippy will have to wait till her fractured jaw is fully mended before she gets a whole bone:D but im gonna def stock up on the turket drum sticks, now im feeling a bit braver.

oh this is new to me! I normally get my dogs bones from the butchers about once or twice a month and they love them but i never thought of giving them a proper drummer. would it be ok for me to add this to there diet but only a couple of times/month or would this upset there bowels too much do you think?

Nope, still too scared...

Anyway, Henry has practically put himself onto a raw diet, what with all the dead things and horse poops he manages to snarfle down on an average walk:rolleyes:

Im no expert but have specific orders from KK not to feed kibble and RAW on the same day as they have different digestion rates, so if you feed the drum sticks cut out the kibble for that day.

On the topic of bones just seen the mad wocker eat a whole bird bones feathers the lot (couldn't get to her in time to stop her) text owner apparently she does this regularly when she catches a bird. No adverse effects. Which gives me more confidience in the bone ideal.

If your post refers to mine, perhaps you could be brave and actually say so rather than making snide remarks?

My dog is healthy and happy, and his diet is neither your business nor concern - nor that of anyone else.

See spuddy I thought that was tame for our Katey and could tell she was jsut....well sad (prob for the dog, that we where to chicken to feed....well chicken:rolleyes::D) and not "mad" and on the ward path:D:D:D (you can usually tell when she takes no prisoners;):D and me and MM where both saying we where scared aswell and im only doing a one day a monther at the moment, so I think Katey meant us all.

*peace is restored* hopefully:p:D

That's exactly what i meant oh peace restorer.:D

Honestly I don't think anyone is a bad owner for feeding kibble at all, far from it (We feed it once a week).

Spud i know you are a fantastic mom to Henry so please don't think i was attacking you.

I just honestly do (from a raw feeding point of view) find it a little sad they people are worried about feeding something that dogs are built to eat.

I have had 50 years of having it drummed (oops sorry no pun intended) into me not to give dogs poultry bones so doubt I will ever confidently change to a total raw diet. Also to feed 3 GSDs would cost me a lot me more than it does to feed them kibble. However for years my dogs did have a "raw" diet, in that I fed green tripe, 2 whole tripes a week cost me £6 and my dogs were always fit and healthy and had great teeth , if I could still get it that is what I would be feeding. Last year Saffy pinched a raw pork bone, and I ended up with a vets bill to remove the blockage so am definitely cautious with her. However I will continue with raw days for the other 2 and am going to risk a turkey drumstick soon. Evie mugged a buzzard for a pigeon yesterday and scoffed that but the feathers slowed her down a bit so maybe that is the way to go, should just feed her feathered birds!

i dont think i wouold ever be able to feed chicken bones after the huge vet bill from the last time but i would be willing to try bigger bones in the hope that it would take them longer to eat them? tried to get some turkey drummers last night but the supermarket didnt have them, might pop to the butchers on saturday and see what they have going cheap
