I don’t ask often

Ok so vets been and gone a while ago I needed time to absorb and get my own thoughts and feelings on a tight leash.

He has had laminitis. Not acute but definitely had it as he has the tiniest bit of rotation. Vet isn’t worried about the rotation that much. SHe is more concerned about how unbalanced his feet are, She also thinks the bad balance is why he is lame currently. She says it’s a mechanical lameness now. She doesn’t think the farrier has done a bad job ans he doesn’t have X-ray vision but now wihh th the X-rays he can sort out the balance correctly and help him 🤞🏼 Other than the above nice clean X-rays. No sign of bone degradation or separation anywhere so it’s been a very mild case but he’s apparently had three in the last year and I know exactly when they were as I thought it was too much roadwork. Now know differently.

She has taken bloods for EMS and cushings. The test for cushings is free so I’m not bothered about that one. She says he is cresty but isn’t worried about his fat pads anywhere else. She did say he’s not the worst Welsh she has seen. I said he’s lost a bit in his neck already and lost 16kgs on the weigh tape and she wants that to continue. She wants me to measure his neck around the thickest part every two weeks and record it.

She wants him shod. I don’t, not because I’m against shoes but my land is clay and I will be hunting the shoes every time I put him out. If it has to be then fine but I’ll have to make a deal with the farrier. She also wants heart bars, I’m not so sure my farrier will agree with such a tiny amount of change. But I’ll leave it to the professionals to battle it out. Farrier knows my preferences and my land type so he can have the final say.

She is happy with his diet. I’ve been down my field today and looked at what I’m working with.

I’ll make a track and keep him in that over summer. I have kept him on a small bit anyway but exercise will be the key as well, he will have to be ridden 5/6 out of 7, once I start doing common ridings over summer the weight will stay off him as those are all day affairs with lots of canter and gallop and climbing hills so that will burn a lot of energy and we will be doing as much as we can.

Hope that all makes sense as my head is fried and I need to make plans to stop
My PTSD taking over and making me down. I am very disappointed as he’s been in a fair amount of work and doesn’t get fed much and not on a lot of grazing but hey ho it is what it is an I’ll just have to get on and deal and make sure he’s happy. I’m going to treat it as LGL with possible EMS until get the bloods back on Monday or Tuesday. Once I have the X-rays I will post them for anyone who is interested in them. I am so glad there were not breaks anywhere and his bones look good.

Thanks everyone I’m trying not to act defeated or out the blame on to myself as I’m prone to do as it won’t help anyone especially not him.

I honestly appreciate everyone’s thoughts. I’m also flattered and so humbled that he’s such a well thought after forum horse ❤️🩵

I'm sorry to hear that.

1. Don't beat yourself up
2. Don't panic.

It sounds like it's been caught early and a lot of people don't manage that so you're already ahead of the game and he's got a good prognosis. We'll done, hope you manage to set up a track for him.
