I was all set to go to a show and was taking a friend along with me, both horses were on trailer ready to go, I had put a head guard up as my mare can be very teritorial of her hay, they were as quiet as lambs, as we set of down the drive way all was good untill we turned the corner and there was a sound of kicking in the back I just shouted "Pack it in" the kicking got worse, I jumped out to see what was going on the trailer was rocking about as my 16.2 was bucking like mad double barelling the back ramp,
I opened the jockey door to find that the back part of the centre partition was on the floor between my horses legs,
People on the yard heard the commotion and came running down to help, I was trying to calm her (the other horse was really good and stayed very quiet) my freind went to undo the pins to lower the back ramp as my mare continually kept Kicking at the ramp, withe the force of her kicking the ramp came down catching a guy on the arm (thank god he was ok)

I managed to unclip my mare as the other horse saw his opportunity to get out and shot backwards and escaped, panicking my mare even more as she tried to turn around to get out, I just shoved her chest as hard as I could so she was clear of the centre pole and she escaped on to the lane, where the others caught her,
I just went into shock and collapsed hyperventilating on the ramp,
thankfully all of us and horses are safe and mirraculously no serious injuries

I spent today walking her on and off the trailer to make sure she was still ok going in there, from now on she will be travelling on her own.

Yikes that sounds scary  Could she have been stung by something to set her of like that?

Glad no lasting damage was done to you or anyone else :)

Ahh bless you. I know exactly how you feel as the same thing happened to me last year!! Its so scary! My mare managed to kick the ramp down, and got her rump under the back bum bar, and took a chunk out of it, while bucking!

Glad to hear all is ok!

Sorry to hear that, what a dreadfull upset :(

Not that it would have helped, but I have a wireless camera so I can see whats happening.

Thank goodness all ok. I really dont like trailers at all, or even travelling horses ever. My cob got all in tizzy this weekend backing out of his trailer after a visit to the farrier. Normally he comes out fine every time but this time hubby was behind and he put his hand on horses rump, to slow him down a bit. Cob gets all worried about what is going on behind, throws up head and smacks his poll onto the partition lock pin!
We had to have a reload/ unload practice session fa few times, but I know he will do it again, so will take out front ways next time.
Oh, and wheres that poll guard!!

thank goodness you are all ok. I think you might need to take her around the block a few times in her trailer just for a drive before you go to another show.....for her sake as well as yours xxx

i was considering getting a camera but havent had the money to get one at the moment,

I think that she has kicked out at the other horse causing the pertition to come off,
i am a worrier at the best of times and I am going to get someone to take me out for a few short trips with her now so that I can get my confidence back with towining with her in, as I have said I have done a session with utting her back on and off the trailer about 10 times and she was an angel,
she npormally travels really well on her own so im hoping she will be not phased by this episode and contue to be good,

I have put a full length breast bar in now and taken the partitions out so there is more room for her and that ther is no possibility of the partition coming off again.
does anyone else travel there horses this way and do you find that they move a bit more than with a partition in

Travelling Dizz back from the vets. On the A1 I heard a loudish noise. Pulled into a layby and checked all round trailer and car. Nothing wrong. Could see Dizz's bum where it should be so thought I must have run over a bottle or something. Got back in and drove off.

But the memory of th noise bugged me, so I pulled into the next layby, got out and opened the jockey door. Flaming good job I did! Half the partition was down and the other half swung across. Dizz was tucked into pretty much the rear corner of the trailer :o :( Luckily she stayed calm while D1 and I sorted it out. We couldn't take her out to do it though. Masses amounts of binder twine later we set off again.

Have a hug and a hit choccy hun. Fingers crossed you both learn to relax again.

use to travel mine without partiton but my youngster 5yr old managed to get both her front legs over breast bar on highest height gave me a fat lip as she struggled to get legs down, luckily shoeless, so put partitions back in will take them out again now she is more use to travelling,

I had terrible trouble getting my pony to load last summer in my trailer and he didn;t seem happy travelling. Lots of people told me to take the partition out, but I worried he would have too much room and not be able to balance.

This weekend I decided to take the partition out and load all alone - just to see, and pony walked on 1st time. On Sunday we travelled to the show minus the partition and he was so much happier - and he loaded 1st time on the way home!

I am now a total convert and the partition is staying out!! I am lucky in that we already have a full lenght breast bar - and I have fitted a full length strap at the back too (which is one of those rubber straps over a chain designed to go across the front of open stabled as my trailer is quite small)

our mare hates it with partition in ,panics and scrabbles.we have full breast and breech bar and she is fantastic.spreads her back legs to balance and is calm and quiet.she would hate to be up close to another in a trailer.i would definatley try this for your horse.

Horses generally don't need to lean on anything, they prefer to have plenty of room to spread their legs to balance. Of course there are always exceptions to this and SOME prefer to have something to lean on.

I had a trailer that had been made higher for my horse, so it was only big enough for one, but it was a rear unload, and I noticed that whatever horse went in, they always travelled diagonally, and the travelled very well.

It is a bit worrying that the horse kicking out managed to dislodge the partition. I now have a Richardson double, which I got as my young horse would give a few hefty kicks when starting out and he would have reduced the old trailer to matches. The Richardson has a solid partition, which is heavy but very strong.

Can you tell me what make of trailer it was and roughly how old. I know one make that did have problems with the partitions coming off but they developed a fix which was sent out to all registered owners. Mine was one of the trailers and we had the rear partition come off and it was held up only by the bars and the horses standing in it. With the fix in place there was no way it could move. Both horses travelled again without any problem so don't despair it may never happen again.

It's truly terrifying when a horse gets into such a major panic that they lose the plot completely. It makes us realise just how powerless we are too! So glad that everyone is OK. What a horrific experience for you all....

After an accident in a friend's trailer at a show some 20 years ago, I really, really hate trailers. I will never forget how scared I was when my friend got trapped inside it with a horse going bonkers in such a confined space - it was very scary.

I am so glad you all survived relatively unscathed, and things settle down when she travels alone. sm x
