I hate mares!!

Pre-booked vet appointment a fortnight ago for today. I planned on bringing my three in last night however by the time i'd finished work it was dark and late and I didn't want to risk walking the gang on an unlit main road. I got the time of appointment via voicemail last night and it turns out I was booked for 8:30. So I got up at 6 and went out in the rain and wind (And semi-dark) to catch. The boys were super, caught easily and were ready to go. The mare? No chance.

If I wasn't stressed enough, the vet called and moved my appointment to 8 and I just thought 'No chance' so gave it my all trying to catch the mare again but after she galloped away and over the stream I gave up. Cue cancelled appointment.

I hate mares. I will never buy a mare again.

Lesson learnt though - Stable two weeks previous to allow time for mardy mares.

Sniggers! I'm a gelding fan, but have three mares here - and they are all as easy as pie because they adore my gelding, and will literally follow him to the moon and back. If I want one, I just catch him, and they all come flying over shouting "Pick me, Pick me!"

That was my plan as she's super attached to the lads however, other than some wailing for a bit, she beggared off! :(
 
My late gelding was a sod, could only get him at breakfast or tea time, so fed twice a day all yr round so I could get him. Meant getting him in at breakfast if we had a farrier or vet appt later in the day, or otherwise preparing to spend time enticing the little horror :rolleyes3:
My current 2 mares are always happy to come, whatever the time of day :)

Ha ha. Horses in general are sods ;)

Opposite situation here - every horse loves Millie and will follow her anywhere :)

I love mares :D I'd choose one over a gelding every time.
 
May mare always used to do this when the farrier was on his way! I used to have a guy that was a total grump bag if the weather was horrible! wouldn't be impressed with muddy feet!! and she'd be galloping around until he got there! she's okay now, but she is 30!! well I say that she did kick me last week as I tried to put her rug on!
 
I love mares too. Chestnut ones particularly!

My only bad catcher was a bay gelding. Catching (or evading) was his favourite game. One which he'd play happily, for hours, every single day.
 
99 times out of hundred my mare was as good as gold to catch and would come straight to me when I called her. The exceptions were if I was ina mega hurry, or she was in season and then she would get very giddy and play silly bs, or if there was a thick Mersey fog in the field. I used to listen for munching sounds as I worked my way methodically around, but I swear she used to stand very still and hold her breath, then tiptoe away in the gloom.
 
I adore my 3 mares. Only one of them is occasionally difficult to deal with but I have to admit that even as she is disappearing over the horizon with her tail up in the air while giving an indignant snort, I am half fuming and half chuckling to myself and admiring her free spirit and feistiness! ;)
 
I love mares... so much so that I have 5 of them, 2 of which are chestnut :D The only one of mine who can be a little **** to catch is my almost 24yo black Shettie x miniature horse. If it's bringing in time you're ok, if you want her at any other time there is a fair chance that she will be up and down the field at something approaching the speed of sound.
 
After I lost my gelding I was adamant that I would get another so cue me buying my first mare! She is so placid, comes to call, can be caught at any time. My daughters gelding on the other hand.......
 
Not to boast, but all four of mine to date have come to call, including the mare (in fact, I think she taught the rest of them to do it). I've never known the joys of having to trail around a rainy field in pursuit of a runaway - lucky me!
 
Aww i so much feel your pain. My mare is a nightmare to get but very fortunately my field is connected to my stable, so i can always herd her into the smaller paddock, then into the stable. Then i go out the next day with the intention of doing some serious training, and walk right up to her. They make you feel like you are insane :D
 
Ah no, mares are lovely..........if you have a good one that is. A narky mare is an 'orrible beast. My best ever horse is a mare, and the worst one was also :-)

Sometimes i wish i got a gelding as she can be a pain but catching her isn't a problem. She comes to call and has been known to canter up and skid to a halt in front of you. I must admit, theres been a few times when she's spun round and run off squealing but 99% of the time she's fine.

Haha, this! Thus far every gelding we've owned has been a nightmare (no pun intended), and our mares are all angels pretty much all the time. Generally, a mare over a gelding would be my first choice, however, I do know some lovely geldings, so as always, it depends on the individual horse, not their gender.
