Yard called to say Jay was down in the field,as standard practice they get them up to check they are ok ( yard check all horses 3 times a day ) and he didnt want to get up, when he did get up he was reluctant to walk but they did get him going.
Hes been stiffer on his hinds the last few days, he has suspensory damage and arthiritis already so I am really hoping its a case of its time to manage with pain killers and nothing more, hes only 19 and been retired 2 years now.
Called vet and they decided it wasnt an urgent case so out tomorrow at 9.30am, not going to sleep tonight i bet.
Any finger crossing would be fantastic x

Thank you xx

Yes, he hates to be stabled, to the point he breaks the doors down to get out, so he lives out 24/7.

Sooooo - he was having a morning kip, and was stiff after getting up after his nap on the ground?????

Is it wet and foggy with you this morning?

Fingers crossed. Not sure where you are but its sunny tho rather chilly here so hopefully he's just been having a longer snooze & its the cold ground making him slightly stiffer.

They couldnt get him to get up which isnt normal for him and when asked to walk he wouldnt, again not normal for him.
Nope, weather is a little cold but dry here, he has been stiffer the last few days and very reluctant to walk backwards, his hinds have started to shake when you ask him to,but the weather has been better here, to the point horses are out naked or in lighter rugs.

Totally agree, much rather have that call and know they are been checked up on than going up later today and not knowing he had been down.

Fair enough - sounds like it's certainly time to medicate him (if you're not already - and perhaps tough decision ahead).

Great that they keep such a close eye on the horses.

Hes not been on anything as hes been a touch stiff but not acting as if in pain, if we had a harsh winter we would have put him on something, although he had just started on devils claw, vet has said to give him 2 bute tonight as i have a few left over and they will take it from there tomorrow.
Last thing i want is to have to make the decision to PTS,but i will not let him suffer, i know in my head he will not know whats happening so just need to make sure my head over rules my heart if it comes down to it.

I would say that you probably need to get him on a course of Bute for a fortnight and monitor him carefully daily.

If there's no improvement after a fortnight, then there is probably unlikely to be any.

Vibes, and positive things for your boy +++++

Sorry to hear that. Glad they checked him though and let you know what was going on, fingers crossed you get to the bottom of it soon and can do something to help him :) Lots of healing vibes on their way to him.

I had 'that' phonecall from YO on saturday, it's terrifying!!
Healing vibes for your lad.

Quick update, his arthritis has got a little worse but nothing we cant handle, hes to have 1-2 bute on days he seems stiff or sore,to walk out in hand for 30 mins or so daily while on winter field as they just stand in front of the haylage rings.
Interestingly, the back leg shaking, the vet thinks shivers,if you ask him to walk back his tail comes up,he struggles to go back and then his leg shakes.
So, its 6 mth check ups unless i feel he isnt happy or coping and we will take it from there.

Hope your boy is OK today.

I thought it was interesting that you have changed to lighter rugs. Its still cold at night and my oldie is still in his heavyweight stable rug. I have found the key to managing him (he's 36) is to keep him warm, at one point I had to use Bute but by using more rugs than I might for a younger horse he no longer needs it.

He was sweating with the rugs he had on as it had been quite warm here so dropped a rug, hes back in a HW as the temp has dropped again. His arthritis is low down at his fetlocks and starting in his knees too.

Better news than you were preparing for, thank goodness.

Have you tried using magnetic boots? They don't work for all horses but I've had great success with an arthritic horse, when bute was losing its efficacy.

It might be worth trying Devils Claw as a inti inflam/painkiller.
I know it's not the same, but it worked wonders on my arthritic old dog - fantastic results.

Hope your boy feels better soon.

We did try the magnetic wraps, didnt make a whole lot of difference to him, plus he lives out so a bit harder to use.
He had just started Devils claw last week x
