Having bought a car so I can get out of London a bit more, I've agreed to share a horse two days a week

He's a 16.3hh Selle Francais gelding, 16yo with a touch of arthritis in his coffin joint so he can't do much jumping. He's bred for dressage and has beautiful paces so I'm hoping I can do some schooling, hacking and a few lessons on him. One day I'll move out of central London and get my own, but I'm so excited about having a share!

The only possible downside is my OH has started riding and we used to have lessons at the same time (at a place quite far from the share horse). The owner of my share has suggested North Cray riding school which is very close to the livery stables. Does anyone on here know it, and any comments good or bad? Feel free to PM!

I used to rider there when I was little, I was only 4, so don't really remember it. There are riding schools in the area that have better facilities, though. The yard my horse is at has brilliant facilities but is VERY busy on weekends and after school hours during the week. Where is your new loan kept, just out of interest.

He's at Park House farm. I'd not been to Bexley before I went to ride him, I had no idea it was so horsey with so many yards. TBH, quality of teaching is more important than facilities, the OH just wants to learn enough to be a happy hacker (on a horse that I'd spend my time schooling and looking after if he got his way...).

Which yard is your horse at?

Mount Mascals, down stable lane it's very close to Park House, has a few instructors that are very knowledgable and hacking as a choice of lesson around joydens woods.

ETA- I added about the facilities just because it's not too much fun riding in the rain when it p***ing down.

Haha, I agree with that but I think he has to learn one day not to be a fair weather rider ;-)

Then perhaps North Cray will be better for him - far less busy. I don't suppose it's much fun to try and learn and concentrate as an adult when you have lots of children on ponies trotting and cantering around the school.

Yeah, he doesn't like to be distracted! Has far higher expectations of himself than his instructor.

I know now who to ask for good hacks in the area though ;-)

You can get a pass for an annual fee to ride around joydens woods without being at the yard though, so maybe you should consider that as it is quite close to Park House, your loans owner might already have one.
