A client went out and left their 4 month old JRT in the kitchen, she was out for an hour and came back and found him dead. He had jumped up the work top and his collar got caught on the door handle and he hung himself.

So sad RIP Alfie x

Oh that's awful. I never leave my dog's collar on in the house for that exact reason - suppose it's the horse owner in me thinking about all those headcollar horror stories. RIP little pup.

R.I.P. Alfie.

I've always heard that you should never leave a dog with collar on indoors until I came on here and if I remember/understood correctly, the rescue from were Acolyte got Flick wished all "their" rescue dogs wore them at home, in case they managed to "escape" and runaway.
But I still would never dream about leaving mine with collars on indoors, I worry enough as it is, I don't need to worry about them strangling themselves also.

Feel so sorry for your client, must have been awful to come home and find him like that.

Poor little thing. The owners must feel awful but accidents happen no matter how careful you are. Mine don't wear collars either but I was going to get them some, not sure now though.

oneofthepack: I have 10 dogs, all of which wear collars in the house. Our dogs never have their collars off. Nothing like this has never happened to any of mine. Its a very unfortunate accident so dont worry if you do decide to leave collars on.
RIP its so sad, can you imagine how awful it would be to walk into that scene. I would be devastated!

RIP Little Doggie.

When I was younger one of our cats broke her neck by jumping out of the window and getting her collar caught on the catch. It was horrific! I felt guilty for ages afterwords as I had been the one to buy the collar (I was only about 12 and spent all my pocket money buying the cats some collars)

. Needless to say none of cats ever wore collars from that day on. RIP Biscuit

How awful.

But on the other side of the collar debate, how many dogs have got in trouble because someone couldn't get hold of them in time, or they got loose without identification? You can't win for trying sometimes.
