I don't happen to believe that "tradition" is wrong - I come from a very long line of horsemen and they never considered horses to be "stupid" - what I think is the problem these days is that the wrong people are having horses - and dogs and children come to that.
People want results at any cost and not to learn anything about the animals - CV jockeys they are called. Most of the children riding today give up before they become adults.
Learn about horses properly, take your time and save your money for proper lessons with a proper professional teacher. I have no time for Americans who come over hear to teach us horsemanship. They appear to me to be in it for the money. A carrot stick by any other name is still a whip!
In addition...I have only ever heard of one report where a person or horse doing natural horsemanship has been hurt or killed (an incident some years ago in Australia).

OK, so the scenario - a young teenager, 13/14 sees that advert....thinks it looks cool and jumps on their own horse, bareback with no hat - falls off and dies, or ends up brain damaged or whatever.....who's fault would it be? All kinds of adverts/TV programmes have been banned from TV to avoid children seeing them, even milk adverts!!!

Also, I am concerned by the number of times a person posts onto this forum with a horse problem such as trailer loading and the answers given advise the handler to hit or otherwise dominate or brutalize the horse. "use blue piping" or "get the yard broom" "a bigger bit" "knock ten bells of [****] out of it."

I think you've been looking at the wrong site as you should notice on here that if anyone suggests something like that they tend to get jumped on by everyone else!!!

The BHS (I'm a member) is fantastic at taking care of the physical side of the horse, and schooling a "problem free" horse but unfortunately they do little to address the psychological and behavioural issues that horses may have, or the confidence issues of the rider and this seems to be where the biggest problems are....take a look at some of the other posts on this forum alone....
"My horse won't do this/that/the other"...."I HATE my horse"......."PC member killed"......."Zara Phillip's horse killed"...."Clipping issues"....."trailering problems"....horses going to slaughter as they are "unmanageable/unrideable"....etc etc.
[/ QUOTE ] I really hope you are not implying that Zara's horse or the PC member died because their handling/riding of the horses concerned was not correct, or not in accordance with NH or Parelli techniques.
I would NEVER use 'Parelli'(I often use IH methods to catch my NF) and I definitely don't use 'quick fix' gadgets, I just train my horses gently and intelligently...there are still afew of us old fashioned folk around who don't need gadgets(yes the 'carrot stick' is a gadget too!) to train our horses!

quote" I would NEVER use parelli but I often use IH methods to catch my NF " bit of a contridiction - surely all under the " natural/ intelligent horsemanship umbrella?
there seem to be a few people on this forum that just cant wait to have a pop at parelli - most of whom it seems (from their views) know not much about it other than harping on about how expensive it is. or, if they do profess to know more, seems to be a case of sour grapes.
Shame on you people for taking what is supposed to be an open forum for discussion and turning it into " lets slag off parelli at every chance we get"
When I said "Why would YOU want to go on the Parelli forum other than to cause trouble." I meant people who are not club members. The members area is a perk of membership where you get to see FREE video clips on "How to" stuff, get in touch with other members and discuss experiences. We are not allowed to give advice and this should only be given by the Parelli professionals.
If you want to know more about it phone the office or go to a demo, with an open mind.
I think it's a common misconception of this forum that if you do Parelli you don't, or aren't capable of doing anything else with your horse. I am a H&H subscriber, have a keen interest in eventing and have (shock, horror) competed at affiliated dressage. I do ride, hack out and have been known to show jump! Have none of you heard of David & Karen O'Connor? A friend of mine who has competed at 4* starts all her horses the Parelli way, got her level 3 in Florida and won at Chatsworth last year. We aren't numpty's who are sucked into some cult, it works you just have to have the commitment to go through the process and not want a quick fix.
With reference to a carrot stick being a gadget, it is not, it's a tool. It is not used to beat a horse to "get it to do what you want."

I have to say from the little I know - IH would be very put out if it were considered to be under the same umbrella as Parelli.
I think they have done everything possible to disassociate themselves from him

Oh, I understand now, I think. If you pay £120 you get to see FREE videos! How exciting!

Unfortunately for me, I have seen more than just Parelli demos in my time. I've seen the preparations too.

Congratulations - you seem to be one of the few Parelli adherents I've ever heard of who actually ride.

Hmmm. So you TAP a horse to get it to do what you want? That's what I use a schooling whip for.
I still don't understand the distinction between a 'gadget' and a 'tool'. Aren't they both used to help a horse understand what you want it do do?

you've said exactly what I was going to, thankyou.
I have the upmost respect for Monty Roberts and can use his methods without spending a penny on gadgets....oh sorry 'tools'
Wow the parelli haters really do need to get a life. Yes, the stuff is expensive. Yes, you have to pay for the forum and yes, they are making alot of money. Are we going to have this debate many more times with the same people saying the same things???
And I don't do parelli BTW so I'm not one of their 'followers' I just think that no-one is forcing you to do or buy anything from them and if you hate it so much and they are such a bunch of idiots then why are you constantly complaining about the prices??? Just for the sake of causing trouble??

Well I could tell you a few stories, but I won't - each to their own.
You don't have to pay for the Dually (magic cure all headcollar ) any more then?

If I had a pound for everytime someone said 'oh I could tell you a few stories' I'd be a bloody rich woman and do you know, most people who say that can't tell you any TRUE stories....
You don't have to have a Dually to use IH, I don't and anyway, surely a one off cost of 40 odd quid is very different to £120 per year plus all of the paraphernalia that you have to buy?? And it what way is it worse than your 'magic' cure all schooling whip, oh sorry carrot stick??

For me it's a matter of principal.....I don't like people being ripped off and although some/most 'P' users know what they are getting themselves into I know that there are the few who fork out hundreds of pounds when really their horse is just not suitable for them......

You don't have to join the savy club or buy any special equipment either but you will have seen the same as me the huge queues of people lining up at the end of demos to buy "the gear" and that goes for both sides!
Lets face it, each to their own and stop trying to browbeat people into your views. - oh and I do not own a carrot stick - but I do not see the problem with having one if you want.
As I have said a zillion times - each to their own. It would be a very boring world if everyone had to think the same!!!!!!!
