I know Patience is a virtue - but I dont want to wait for another dog anymore

I've posted lately about getting another doglet (a rescue) and the plan had been to start looking after Millie (my JRT) has been spayed - however, for various reasons, i have decided to delay Millie's spay until after her next (2nd) season - reasons realted to my horse and managing her condition mainly - wont bore you - and although she's definitley better, that on top of other things means its the decision i've made.

Anyway - I've had a homecheck from greyhound and passed - however they dont seem to want to start looking for a suitable dog until Millie is 'done' (which in some ways i do understand - but they do only rehome neutered dogs, however that is their decision and i completely respect it) - I've sent them and email and let them know my change of plans, and have asked if they will consider us whiile Millie is 'entire' it'd be great, but understand if not etc etc. havent heard anything ba - i dont want to sound like i'm complaining - i'm really not, they've been fantastic to deal with, and really friendly - its just that now my riding is basically dwindling to very little - having another dog around to occupy me (along with Millie obviously) would be fab.

I've been in contact with a local rescue that comes very highly recommended by a vet friend of mine, they are going to keep me on file as they dont have anything suitable at the moment (another stipulation is that they need to be small furry friendly) and they will let me know if one comes up - but its sooooo difficult to be patient - now i'm set on having a second i'm just desperate to have one...

So if anyone knows of a dog needing a home (i'm determined to rescue & support an organisation), here's my list of 'requirements':
Dog friendly
Cat friendly
Able to be part of an active lifestyle - i run every morning and a long walk at night, as well as in a dog club where we do flyball and have just started agility.
Ideally a dog (although i wont discount a bitch completely)
18months and over ideally (basically i dont want a puppy and already have a 1 year old JRT in the house)
I really wanted a lurcher/whip/gray type but would consider others (I'm sure i'll get shot down, but i'm not keen on staffy types - nothing against them, just not my kind of dog, have known plenty of lovely ones though!)
Ideally medium size (I'd like to avoid teeny tiny - already have one, and would like something a bit bigger - i'm 5'10" and already spend a lot of time crouching down with Millie!)

I dont think thats a particularly specific list of requirements (other than the cat bit), I dont mind dealing with any small issues (but wouldnt consider myself experienced enough to deal with major issues) - anyone who can point me in the direction of this kind of dog let me know please! happy home and space on the sofa awaits!

A Grey is definatley the way to go.
I can understand the reason for having Millie done as I suppose they are trying to encourage all dogs to be done, but the fact the new Grey would have been neutered does make me wonder why they won't release one.
Be a struggle for a Grey on a Jack anyway...not impossible but he'd have to be led down or the Jack on several copies of the yellow pages!!!:D

Lexi - i'm in leicestershire, and willing to travel, but that maybe a bit far for them to consider rehoming to? - Seolan is lovely - but maybe a bit younger than i'm looking for - although i'm tempted to contact them anyway.

Bug - yep I do understand their logic on neutering - but believe me Millie will be done - no doubt about that! just keeping my fingers crossed now - would be great to find a grey/whippety/lurcher type - will keep my options open though...

You would be surprised how far they will travel- I wouldnt worry about his age, seems like he has his head screwed on

Just been on their rehoming questionnaire - they wont rehome to homes that have un-neutered dogs - so it'll be a no...maybe i'll just have to wait until Millie is done!

Have left a voicemail, will wait and see... I feel a bit guilty like i'm cheating on greyhoundgap - they've been so lovely!

My friend had the same thing with GG, as she had a pup that was still too young (in her mind) to be neutered and a bitch they were waiting to spay as per vet advice which she explained, in the end she just decided to go with another greyhound rescue that wasn't so picky about having all dogs in household done.

Not sure if Lurcher link policies are similar in that aspect, but they also have an other homeless hound section for private/other rescues to advertise on. GRWE also home lurchers & greyhounds nationally i think. You could also check out the Retired Greyhound Trust branches, often they will home to nearby counties so you probably have a few you could contact, they tend to be run individually so rehoming policies vary. I'd contact them even if you don't see your ideal dog on their website as it varies how up-to-date they're kept. Whitelodge is probably your local one, i've never been to their kennels so not sure if they do only have a few dogs to home or not, but they have monthly sighthound walks that you might be interested in & are a friendly bunch.

2Greys, thanks for that information - i go onto lurcherlink a lot, and have put a 'home offered' post on there. I'll keep logging in and see what they have.

I'll definitely have a look at the others you've mentioned too, thanks very much! i'm really grateful,

I'm friends with the chap that runs Lincolnshire Greyhound Trust and know they regularly cat test their dogs and homed a fair few with cats although they don't foster the dogs like GG. Not sure if they home in Leic's but do go as far as peterborough so may well do. They have homed to a few people i know with entire dogs in the household so i doubt it will be an issue.

ETA- Greys aren't known for their stamina, so you may have to slowly build up for a running partner, but i did meet a couple that run a few miles with their greys the other week.

Thanks again! Have just spoken to a really nice lady from GRWE - she's going to pass my information on and see if we can arrange a homecheck.

will check out the other sites recommended, just loading lincolnshire greyhound trust now,

RE: running - i dont go far (i'm not capable) it's 15 minutes at a relatively steady pace - i'm no athlete so hopefully wont be an issue!!

Where abouts in the country are you, Lurcherlink will rehome to homes with entire
dogs, I'm one of them! It would be worth giving Kaye a ring (she is very busy and
often misses posts on LL) She may have something suitable or will have very soon!
Also because you have passed your GG homecheck, this will usually stand to rehome
a lurcher link dog.

That's good news and sounds like you have plenty of alternatives. I wouldn't feel guilty about not going with GG, with having that policy they must expect some people will opt to go elsewhere as most of us start enquiring with view to bring a dog home in next month or so and as you've had good experience otherwise you'll no doubt pass on their details to others or consider them for another dog in future so its not like they lose out totally.

WL do appear to have a gorgeous cat friendly, house trained dog in at mo - Sam.
