I need a hug

I've had the most stressful morning, well it started off ok, I rode Axey in the school and he was fab I am really pleased with him.

He was tied up on the yard ready to be turned out and I got a sponge and went to wipe his mouth and face where his bit and noseband had been, I do this every time I ride him so it's not new.
Anyway he totally freaked and put his head up and was leaning right back trying to pull away. He was tied to a thin bit of bale string onto the ring but I think because he was leaning back on it it didn't break straight away, if he had suddenly pulled back I'm sure it would have snapped easily.
The string suddenly broke and poor Axey went flying back, sat down like a dog then fell over in a heap outside a stable, he couldn't get his footing and was lying there struggling to get up for what seemed like ages, he eventually managed to get up but then couldn't stand up properly, he was very uncoordinated and wobbley. After a few minutes he looked ok so I walked him on and he looked fine.
On closer inspection he's grazed his right hock and badly grazed his left fetlock and cut his mouth/lip on the inside and outside. He looked very shaken indeed but when I went to bathe the cut on his lip he nearly did the same thing again, but I was ready this time and untied him.
My poor poor pony, I feel so sorry for him, but I have no idea why he did it

I put him out in the field and he just walked off, normally he gallops.

Then I went down to feed the mares and fell over in the mud!

Thanks for listening, cookies if you got this far.

maybe just wasnt expecting it! i know my neddy gets this done everyday but if shes not quite paying full attention she snaps the bail string!

hugs for axey though!
and you!

Thanks,
I'm thinking it might have something to do with him geting his reins caught in that gate last week...
It's so out of character to do that, normally he gets to the 'stopping point' and walks forward again.

Poor boy, sounds like he gave himself a bit of a fright!

Maybe you just made him jump with the sponge or there was something on the sponge that pricked him?!

Put it down to one of those freak moments.

Fingers crossed he will be ok later when you get him in...although he might now associate the sponge with falling over!

I'm sure he will be fine, I had a mare that used to pull back all the time but on one occasion the string didn't snap and she slid onto her side still tied up. She was thrashing around but got up as soon as I un-tied her. She seemed very sorry for herself for a few hours but was fine. Funnily enough she hardly pulled back again after that.

big hug I am sure he will be fine, my horse turned the tap on and gave himself heart failure and almost did what yours did. he will be fine lots of polos normally always does the trick!!

I am sure he will be fine, but I know how scary it can be. My old horse once got away from me when I was lunging him in the arena which was unfortunately unfenced - he ran back onto the concrete yard and slipped and fell on his side. It was horrible, I was really scared, but he was fine, just a few scrapes. (((Hugs))) for you anyway

my horse gives me more grey hairs on a daily basis i am surprised I am not completely grey by now!! lots of polos make very bad situation better (Rocky says so!!)

Big hug!!

Thanks, I felt terrible at the time like I wanted to cry. YO was there so I didn't (he's not the most sympathetic person!) although he was very helpful.

I must have loads more grey hairs now....

It is odd though, wonder what made him pull back to begin with?

Similar thing happened to our 3yo the other week, he got lead rope over his ears and pulled back ended up sat on his bum on the yard, lucky for me though, had i been standing 3ft further forward he would've been sat on me!

It's horrible once you start thinking about what might have happened, YO said what if my little girl had been there and he had fallen on top of her?
You were lucky you wasn't sat on then!

[/ QUOTE ]

Ahh but it didn't, so best not to worry about what might have happened too much

Hugs for a Seahorse ...... Merlin did exactly the same thing about a month ago...... freaked at the solo comb and ended up going backwards over the mounting block!!!!

He just pulls and pulls till something breaks...... usually the rope or headcollar (tied up on one piece of tatty baler twine)

Got him in this evening, he looked fine and was sound but to me he wasn't right, he was much too quiet and subdued. I bandaged his legs and he had a nice new deep bed and I'll have to see what he's like in the morning.
He also has a big lump and a cut on the top of his neck which is really sore aand just where the bridle goes, so looks like no dressage for me on wednesday then, and I had entered our first elementary

What a shame about the Dressage (Horses are such brilliant levellers) .... perhaps a few days off will help, as I expect he may be stiff in the morning, but normally the stiffness is worse a couple of days later (that is what happens to me

) ... so that is Wednesday

Let us know how he is in the morning and lots more <<<< Hugs >>>> to you both
