Right, here goes. This is a sweeping statement, I know, but never mind.

Why do all show jumpers look just, well, er, chavvy?

At Bramham at the weekend and I saw the following:

1. Girls with long hair, no hair nets, hair flapping about.
2. FAR too much make up on children.
3. A girl who had her name 'Emily' sticthed onto the back of her show jacket.
4. Thongs showing above jodphurs/breeches.
5. Lots of 'bling'.

It always looks like they've taken the pony/horse off the lorry and thrown the entire contents of their tack room at it and whatever sticks, stays on.

I don't know. I was at Richmond Equestrian centre on Friday and I know everyone goes on about Dressage Divas and bling and stuff, but it was much more civillised, everyone was very well turned out.

And what is it with not plaiting up for show jumping?

Pah - I'm getting old!

I agree

When you can spend £500 on a pair of boots which are patent with diamante covering the top (

) I think its a bit OTT !
(1) is my pet hate , I even wear a hairnet to ride at home

EDITED TO SAY - I'm 16 and cringe at it

so nothing to do with age

ooooh you might be in serious trouble but they are probably all too busy filling in applications for Jeremy Kyle to read this post!!!!!

Just kiddding, just kidding! We love you show jumpers really your gutsy! x x x

My main notice at Bramham was the over use of Flashes and Grackels.. (sp?) nearly every single horse had either one or the other.. infact i dont remember seeing a plain cavesson noesband anywhere.. feel free to correct me if i'm wrong...

Also whats with the "i've been eliminated so i think i will whip my horse one last time for the sake of it" I was really shocked by this, more so because it was in the pony jumping and it was kids doing the whipping!

Ok my rant over..

I don't think its so much that show-jumpers are chavvy, as it is that chavvy kids want to SJ, because its "cooL" and apparently doesn't take as much effort as dressage and you aren't out of sight for a moment, like you are in XC.

I BSJA my mare and i have to agree - *although* i do jump with my hair in a ponytail and no hairnet and dont plait up either. I dont wear makeup, or have a thong showing (im sorry but that just plain wrong!!!).

I think alot of it is fashion, which seems to come with every discipline. I always comment on the eventers with that sheepskin breastplate, tweed jackets and skull caps. Equally dressage riders with their bling.

I do agree however that horses and rider should be neat and tidy for the show ring.

disgusting boots

Not £500, *only* £425 :P

Those are really impressively revolting boots. I wonder if there is a limit to how much bling one rider / horse combination could wear into the ring? You could have those boots, plus the blingy spurs, plus the diamante trim on your jacket collar and pockets, plus earrings, plus a sparkly stock pin, and the gloves with diamantes on. Then the horse can have a blingy browband and noseband, plus a saddle cloth with a diamante edging and one of those saddles with the diamantes on the back of the cantle. I am sure I've seen diamante-set bits as well.....

Sorry, I like those as well!

Maybe I ought to take up showjumping ... I wouldn't even need to jump anything neccessarily I could just take the horse, add the bling and ride around the warm up arena looking 'cool' - obviously I'd be talking on the phone, disrepecting all the riding arena rules, possibly chewing bubble gum at the same time as showing my diamante encrusted thong through my too tight white breeches whilst riding my unplaited blinged out horse in party make up
grin.gif

I jump in a thong, it's comfier!!!! not visible tho. saves on vpl.
I ride in a hairnet and matching ribbon,
I don't plait, I jump a cob, it's hogged.

No crystel or bling in sight though I do over dress my horse, full tendon wraps/supports all round and over reach boots though she doesn't over reach generally

I do jump in a cavesson. I also jump in a martingale despite her not raising her head much, but I'm an adult on a hogged horse, would you really have me jump in a neck strap?!!!! lol

I've noticed the more rural the show the smarter the horse and riders. Went to a show in a town the other day, thought I'd landed on a PDiddy video!

Lovely pony, ridden badly, eliminated. beaten. Dumped rider on way out. Clever pony!!

You can indeed get them ... is now a bad time to mention that I already own a diamante encrusted saddle cloth and stirrups

They are pink diamante's obviously though, if that makes it any better!?

I agree with the hair (one particular senior hair down to her backside!). The BSJA did have a rule against this at one point but have since seemed to have dismissed it. I didn't watch the ponies show jumping so can't comment but personally I don't see the problem in them wanting to 'jazz up' what they're wearing if they want to and it's competition legal. Yes to some it may appear 'tacky' but so what, it's not hurting anyone is it?

Personally yes I'll stick to my normal breeches and plain black jacket but i do wear a flash/mexican noseband on my horses when I jump and there are well schooled and will do dressage fine for eventing etc but i do require that extra bit of 'help' when jumping as my horse is keen! I don't plait up my horse, it has a nice pulled mane and don't see the necessity to plait.

I would query why in dressage it is ok/required to wear a unsecured hat (ie no chin strap etc) to compete in dressage at top level? Surely safety should come first in whatever discipline at whatever level?

Don't even Joke about it ...... you may give some people the idea its ok !!

I'd forgotten to mention the chewing gum and talking on the phone.

As for using a martingale instead of a neckstrap, I'm speechless! I know lots of adults that ride with a neckstrap. Admittedly only of XC though.

It's interesting though that eventers don't go for the bling, even though they sj.

Think I would agree with Trundle in the sense SJ not chavvy - the kids wanting to SJ are.

Have to ask though - how has bling been introduced into the equestrian world - I've never even seen those boots before. I need to get out more!! There's obviously a demand for it, where did it start? I know Gucci's thing at the minute is the bridles "bit" on everything you buy. Has that always been their trademark? I thought Gucci were two G's entwined?

I remember one of Tim Stockdale's horses a few years ago wearing a browband that had a tiny brass "bit" in the centre, I actually thought it was lovely and hunted high & low for one - I think someone on here got me one abroad but I wouldn't call that bling - it was more cute.

oh my gosh, I've never seen an adult ride in a neck strap, it's something of a joke or insult round here!!! Surely i redeem myself with no bling in sight tho?

that is cute, have a quick look on ebay, you can get diamonte numnahs, bridles, stirrups, everything, it's over the top-ness gone mad!!

Neck-strap = common sense. I am happy to be a joke, though, at least with my neckstrap I am not generally a joke on the floor ! I am sure William F-P uses a neckstrap at times as well....

I showjump.
My horses are not plaited - i believe that plaiting is uncomfortable for a jumper - having your hair screwed up tightly and then having to stretch your neck to bascule has got to be uncomfortable.
My horses are always well turned out, just not plaited.
I dont wear a hair net - but i plait or tuck my hair into my hat.
My boots are expensive and my horses wear different browbands - one a small diamond one and the others have small chains.
My horses vary from grackles to flash nosebands depending on whether they are jaw crossing or not - and this is recommended by many of the instructors ive had down the years.

i wasnt aware this made me a chav.
Are you telling me my horses look a state because they are not plaited?

I don't mind them wearing all the bling and all the rest themselves, but it does annoy me when they strap grackles and martingales onto their horses and shove seriously strong and unusual bits in their mouths just to make themselves look cool.
crazy.gif

i have seen this especially in juniors and agree with most of it apart from that i also wear my hair in a pony tail and don't plait when im showjumping purely as i have been brought up that way but i always plait and wear a hair net for dressage and showing!

But how do you know that their horses don't need them! Pickle is ridden in a plain cavesson for schooling but has a NS universal and grackle for hacking and if he goes anywhere new. He doesn't look like he needs it if you see him in the school but that doesnt mean he doesnt need it out hacking.

It wasn't the price of the boots I was complaining about or calling chavvy . Its just the diamante and patent I dislike
crazy.gif

Infact you look very smart and I do love the browband in the last pic

I hate to burst your bubble but its very easy to spot riders in thongs. And its not nice. Ok, Im old....I will get my coat.

lol it wasnt an attack on you ISH - just thought id put my ' chavvy showjumper ' thoughts across!!

one of my friends has the patent diamond boots - i admit i thought eww but they really suit her and she is 40 odd so not a junior!!

i will not be buying a pair but each to their own - does it really matter what tack/ footwear / plaited / unplaited mane horse and rider are wearing as long as the horse is happy??

and as for the kids blinging up - while it is not to my taste they are CHILDREN after all - why not let them wear pink and bling - who is it hurting?
