Grace came in crippled lame on Sunday night, so I had the vet up first thing on Monday who found a big abscess which started coming out as soon as he had a dig around. He cut some of it away, told me to warm poultice it, and then the farrier could have another dig around on Tuesday when he was coming out.

The farrier came out on tuesday evening and said he thought it looked on its way out and did not really take much off her foot. He told me to continue warm poulticing it for another two days (Weds and Thurs) then dry poultice on Friday, Sat, Sun and Mon and he would come out on Tuesday to put her shoe back on.

Yesterday, there was still stuff coming out on the poulitce, so the vet said to continue warm poulticing until tomorrow (then put a dry one on) and see how she is when the farrier comes back out on Tuesday.

There is a still some clear stuff coming out on the abscess (was discoloured before), but she still looks quite lame in trot when she trotted across the field. I only put her out for 2 hours with a poultice on, and there was nothing on it this morning at all even though it still smelled.

So it looks as though we are going to miss the Area Festival on Saturday... I am absolutely gutted to say the least. It would have been the first one we have done, and I was looking forwards to going having qualified

Thanks... feel really fed up today because I honestly thought she would have been more or less sound by now, and once she had her shoe on would be ready to be back in work.

I am now starting to wonder whether it was just the abscess causing the lameness

sounds as if the abscess could have caused the lameness.
I am meant to be going to Ardingly on Tuesday for area festival but it may not happen due to Foot and Mouth

You sound very getted by the whole thing and I do not blame you. Having to miss a show you have qualified is bad enough it itself but having to miss it because of a broken pony is even worse

I really do hope she mends well and it is the problem to her lameness and nothing else underlying that it unknown about. Fingers cossed that she makes a speedy recovery and you do well at your future competitions.

You may have seen my posts over the past couple of weeks about my horse who had an abscess and is entered for the intro champ on Saturday. Well he has a shoe with pad on and on the surface is fine, we are not allowed to test him on the road as he says he doesn't want any concussion.I still have my fingers crossed.
He was lame until the shoe went back on because his sole was tender from the cutting. So keep hoping both horses may still compete next Saturday

That really sucks hun; I cant decide whether you should be annoyed to miss it for such a stupid lameness, or glad that its only a little lameness. You shouldnt worry though, you and Grace are a great combo & Im sure you'll easily qualify for next time out!

Quick reply...

Carthorse, I have been following your posts, so may suggest something like a pad as the hole is pretty deep at the moment. You never know eh?! But I won't take her unless I am 100% happy that she is sound because as Jemayni has said, there are always others. It is just so annoying because I felt so proud of her qualifying for the Prelim in her first two outings, and the Novice in her first two novive classes

Aw thanks... Hopefully we will have another chance. I wanted to do this one because I would really like to qualify for the regionals next time and I thought the Areas would give us both a taster of a competition like this.

Yes ,we have cotton wool in the holes ,then the pad.We really need to jump some ditches before Saturday but we will go slowly the next few days then reassess.
Would your test be on surface because that would be much better

Hi beckii, sorry to hear that!

I'm sure it's just the absess - my horse had one a while ago, and i think it helps to get them out as much as poss? Helps draw it out the more walking i think?
Don't get to worried that it's something more sinister just yet!!
I *think* i'm doing the AF, and was looking forward to seeing Grace in action- not really looking forward to her beating me on my big carrot i have to admit!!

How gutting. Hils often suffers with pus in the foot and when he gets them he waves his leg around doing a good impression of a horse with a broken leg! Our farrier told us to use disposable nappies instead of a dry poultice and they work brilliantly. He comes sound really quickly and then usually has a pad on especially if they have had to dig quite a bit of foot away.
Stay positive - you never know!

Bad Luck. She is probably still lame as you haven't had the shoe put back on yet, unless I've got the timeline wrong. I would wait and see the difference a shoe makes.

Thanks everyone... Good news today. She trotted off in the field and looked a lot sounder than she did the other day

So there is still a very SLIM chance that she could be right for the Areas on Saturday

I have dry poulticed it today because my friend (was a vet nurse) said if it is just clear stuff coming out that the infection has been drawn out now and to start getting it to harden up. I have just put a nappy on with some vetwrap and silver tape. She has been out for 2 hours this morning, and I will put her out for a few more hours tonight when I get back. Depending on how she is doing, she may be able to go out all day tomorrow with a dry poultice over it.

The shoe is going back on this Tuesday (morning hopefully) and I will ask him about putting something in there to make sure it stays clean etc.

SAMgirl, what classes are you entered into? I was supposed to be doing the Prelim and the Novice with Grace. If I go, we'll have to look out for each other

Have you got a picture of your horse then I can look for you and come over and say hi? I don't think Grace is going to cope very well with the atmosphere, especially as she has been in for well over a week and is completely excited at the smallest thing
