I Took HHO To The Stables ....

The avatar should help! Sorry, welcome you two! Personally, I think a nice little box is a good thing to have - an acceptable label on it is what we all strive towards......
tongue.gif

No need to apologize, I never did the whole "hello, I'm new" thing, just got stuck in really. Always felt welcome anyway. Yes, it's the label on the box that we're worried about

My avatar is all down to my OH (he's ace
grin.gif
), I turned on my laptop one day and was greeted by the picture as my desktop, so I made him help me turn it into an avatar as well.

He works with computers, so is better at that kind of stuff than me.

Hi Jessbury and Faerie
smile.gif

Don't worry about thinking you are a thread stopper. I have been here for quite a long time and I manage that quite nicely too. I suppose threads have to end somewhere so why should it not be me or thee??
tongue.gif

Just muck on in, we will soon get to know you, then we can put you in to boxes
wink.gif
I suppose you have put me in yours now!! LOL

Christ, reading this post has made me a little bit paranoid about which 'box' I'm in, anyone else feel like that?

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh dear, when I posted in the morning I didn't give it a second thought; just assumed we all do it and didn't really care. Now after reading all the posts that acumulated since the morning/afternoon I must say I started wondering...
Has Tia achieved a 2007 record post with over 1500 visits?????
smile.gif

no i meant this white box wot i write stuff in.have only had webnet since november and have had 4 nights when i havnt been to bed.started on tack shops4couple weeks then western tack then all the horsey stuff on u tube now found hho.put me in a sad box.prob only ere cos no lights in yard!

Don't worry, i don't really mind what people think of me. After all, none of the people on here know me that well yet, so I'm hoping that nobody has formed a firm opinion on me yet. Also, in real life I've always been classed as slightly random anyway
crazy.gif
(just another box to be in I suppose)
As to Tia breaking a record, this is deffo the longest post I've seen since I joined!
(1 more post and I lose my newbie tag, will it happen tonight?)

Faerie I know exactly how you feel in regards to being paranoid about what people think about you and what box you are in.
And feeling like the conversation stopper as I too feel this way so you are not alone!

QR -

Well perhaps I'll be the thread-stopper LOL!!

I've been out all day and now I have a moment to sit down and visit my cyber-friends again I have to say when I saw the length of this thread I thought "oh no!!"
shocked.gif

Actually I was a teensy bit worried about reading it as I thought that there must have been some raging argument or my point of the post had been totally taken out of context and I was going to be ripped apart!
shocked.gif

What a relief it was to read all the responses - very good and interesting replies guys! I am most impressed.
cool.gif

I'm not too sure whether the initial post really came across although if one reads the whole of the first page I think the thought-process did come across. I was just merely mulling over what we get out of HHO; why we do the things we do and most importantly how do we know whom to trust.....and even if we trust their advice on one condition does that really mean we should trust them on another, and because some of us do things in a certain way should everyone do them this way too. Quite obviously the answer is no.....and I was sooo pleased to read that most people on here are very aware of this.

I guess the point of the post was to give us all a bit of a wake-up call, that yes this place is possibly the closest most of us will come to "the font of all knowledge", horse-wise anyway whatwith the, quite literally, 100's of years of combined knowledge.....but even with that, we should still try to figure things out ourselves, ask people in real life, do research etc because everyone gets things wrong, lots of people do things which are just run of the mill to them and yet to others who maybe don't have the life experience it could sway them into doing something that they really don't know how to......d'you know what I mean?

Hence coming to the point of putting people in boxes; this was more meant from the perspective of the person learning rather than what knowledgeable people think of them. The point being that one might see lots of good advice from a person, therefore they may box them into the "knowledgeable" camp and therefore may not ever question the correct/incorrect ramblings of what this person may say about other conditions......so I mean't that yes listen to everyone BUT also make up your own mind, do your own research and askings in real life.
smile.gif

No worries with hijacking - it happens all the time on here and generally it is very interesting to see other points developing.
cool.gif

Finally, I just want to say hello to Sanda. I hope you are well and enjoying your lovely life with your wonderful husband and all your ponies.
smile.gif
It's so nice to see you, even if it looks like I just missed you by minutes. Your sweet pony is still in my thoughts even though it is almost 3 years since you lost Sanda. Wow didn't we both have a lot of heartache back then eh...
frown.gif
. This is why it gives me a lot of pleasure to see you hardly ever come on HHO anymore - because I KNOW just how happy you must be now.
smile.gif

Thank you so much Tia, I often think of you too, and all your open and sensible advice . Ruaridh found me Sandas daughter and presuded her owner to let us have her for breeding for a year so shes here with me now and is the double of her mum and in foal. The ring test says its a filly ! I see
Cloud is in foal too, and its not far away, thats lovely

Wow - what a huge thread! I must say I usually try and stick to advising on topics I know most about - the feeding of laminitic and dentally-challenged ponies being one! I do remember an occasion when I ventured to answer a question that I thought I knew the answer to, when I actually didn't. Luckily vicijp was there to put me right
blush.gif
. I learnt my lesson from that I only reply to questions I really do know about.

I do think one of the problems for novice horse-owners is to gain enough experience to know whether advice given is valid or not - whether it is given via a forum, from friends or from 'experts' such as vets, farriers, instructors etc. Even the 'experts' can be wrong sometimes and it is important to have enough background knowledge to know when they are.

Well, well, come back have you? Left us all welded to our 'puters all day, getting nothing done and you waltz back in here like, well a waltzing person. 10 pages of thread. That'll teach you to b8888r off!

As always, a thought provoking post, Tia! Thank you.

One of my old horses yesterday looked like he was dying. We were in the middle of something else which was pretty important...
blush.gif
shocked.gif
shocked.gif
blush.gif
..so although I ran across to him to see how he was doing....he had to be left until after we had finished.

* witness headless chicken impression from me *

Does this mean we all now have to add an 'I'm in the (fill in label) box' thing to our signature now!!

Hope we aren't boxed by our avators as I ain't got one! Just found this thread. I think I possibly err on the side of caution when calling the vet, often just for advise over phone. I think I've got good basic common sense and have had horses and dogs 40+ years, but you are always learning. Just got back into full time riding and care whilst daughter at uni(studying veterinary, role on the day when she can advise!) Reckon I'm pretty confident in care of laminitics/cushings and have also done the cross-tying after a fracture bit. But I would always offer my experiences as an opinion rather than as the definitive way to do something. I only found this forum recently, after daughters horse had suffered adverse reaction to flu jab and it was reassuring to read others views as I was stressing, had only been in charge of him for a month! I would say there are some people on here who I do feel are experts, and find some of the posts fascinating. Am totally hooked on Hannah's foal updates by the way. Sorry for the long post, got carried away.

I'm glad you can see where I'm coming from
smile.gif

I actually really value the input from mature younger members like yourself - it's sometimes easy to forget that I was young once.
wink.gif

And in relation to me taking advice from older people, that's only when a younger person couldn't really be expected to know the answer, ie if I was asking for flattering big pants for middle aged spread.
grin.gif

However, if I wanted advice on a particular bit for example, and you used that bit on your horse, your input would be far more valuable to me than an older person who hadn't used it.

It's all about things balancing out really.

You know dubble I see totally where you are coming from. Made PERFECT sense to me. I get a lot of help from my parents and YO on my pony and riding and I look up especially to my dad and YO more than I do to most people and value their advice very highly, but certain others may know more about a certain topic from 1st hand experience than them. With things regarding things like school work etc I usually ask people who have been there done that. I love helpful comments here from older people and love input from people my age too. But knowledge comes from experience and experience usually comes with time and along the way there are people there to guide you, expand your knowlegde, and give you advie for you to then share to others!!!

"And in relation to me taking advice from older people, that's only when a younger person couldn't really be expected to know the answer, ie if I was asking for flattering big pants for middle aged spread.

that made me chuckle so like my mum lmao.

OMG Madgirl, I never even realised that you still live with your parents! From all the posts I've read, I thought you were at least eighty!

You, and the two others I mentioned, have actually proved that some younger members have way more maturity than I gave them credit for, and for that I apologise unreservedly.
smile.gif

And you may not understand the finer points about big pants, but that is a GOOD thing. Your time will come...

Haha 80?? eeekkk lol by then i'll be a criple at a nursing home lol!

Yes live with my parents most of the time but I go to boarding school so they get rid of me for some time lol!

Don't appologise, I see where you are coming from I am very immature sometimes as are a lot of us younger ones on here some more than others!

paranoid?every time i write a little letter in one of these little box things the whole thread stringy thing dries up and everybody goes away.

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh bless you, that DID make me laugh!
grin.gif

It's a well known phenomenon called being a 'thread killer' and happens to us all, honestly!
grin.gif

I've just finished reading this thread, my 2 cents shall now follow...

I post advice when it is something that I have dealt with personally ie the curse of grass sickness or working a lazy little 14.2 lol

There are many, many topics asking for help that I couldn't possibly comment on as I don't have a clue about them. I enjoy reading them though as it helps me learn things and keep up to date, always taking things with a pinch of salt of course
smile.gif

My first ever post here was asking for a bit of vet advice on an unusual lump that April had. It wasn't an emergency at all in which case I'm sure I would not have the time or wits to post on HHO!
It was nice to share something that had stumped me and everyone at the yard whilst waiting a few days for the vet to visit.

Anyways, apart from really wondering what box I would be in, this has been a very interesting debate.
