Following on from the thread How long would it take?

Why would any sane person want to work with horses?

Don't get me wrong, I love horses and am in the happy situation of having 3 of my own and I do pay someone else to muck out on the days that I work. But from what I've heard on here most people who work with horses (and don't run their own business) get paid a pittance (So often can't afford to keep their own), made to work like slaves and treated like dirt by their employers... What is the appeal??

As I said on the other thread I don't anymore. And I would never ever go back to it either! I can afford two of my own lovely horses now and am treated with respect at work rather than being sworn at all day. Sod that frankly!

Today I have been asking myself the same question!!! Had a god awful day! lol

But for me, its the nuzzle of affection harvey gives when I rug him up. The whinnies I get when i pull into the yard. The silly dance Junior does when you turn him out.
The fact that I get to work with some fab horses that I would never be able to afford myself.

I think really I just love being around them. I wouldnt swap it for the world. I worked in a shop for a year, and was bored stiff. Hate being indoors. So horses are perfect.

I do have a lovely boss though abd treated very well so maybe thats why I find it better.

I have recently become self employed so now get paid decently and get treated really well, but in the past I have worked for well below minimum wage which was supposed to be in return for training (which I hardly ever got) and I was always exhausted and often too tired to ride my own horses. I worked like this full time for a year and a half and before that, used to help out a yard doing the same hours for nothing! Yes, I was a bit mad, but I did it for the love of the horses. The reason I decided I wanted a career with horses in the first place was because I decided I would rather do something I enjoyed and be happy than do something I hated doing but having a lot of money. I love working with horses, you learn something new everyday and no day is ever boring!

The one thing I have learned though is not to work at the yard where you keep your horses - as it tends not to work out!

I have been working part time with horses for the past few years to get me through college and uni. And tbh I did it for the horses and the opportunity to ride, which I didn't have without my own horse!! Wouldn't mind being a groom now, but when I do own my own horse I don't really want to mix my hobby with work and not have the enthusiasm to do your own horse at the end of the day.

Have had some lovely employers and some down right nasty ones too.

Got a degree in Equine dentistry but now decided to work in the more well paid officey type equine work :) We will see how that pans out...I get bored indoors!

Because I get tremendous job satisfaction from it, as well as a lifestyle and house I would never be able to afford otherwise.
I get to work alongside the best vets and horsemen, I get to meet the greatest horses and people.
It keeps me fit too!
But more importantly, I get paid (a not too bad wage I hasten to add) to spend my days getting to know horses. I'm there when they are conceived, and born, I get to gain their respect and teach them lessons to help them in their life.
I get job satisfaction from all of it, and despite having spent most of my working life with them, I still learn new things every day.
No 2 days are the same, each season of the year is different.
And for every cold wet day, there is a gloriously sunny one.
For every sad moment, a joyful time to make up for it.
I wouldn't change it for the world.
Although a lay-in would be nice ;)
