I watch too much pre-school TV, this made me cry tho!

:( very well explained by woolly the spider!
my friends 4 yo had to have her pony PTS a few weeks ago, and explained that she had to go to sleep and go to heaven, were here grandma is as well. her little girl suggested windy the pony would have to get a plane to heaven, which she keeps calling devon! her mum is paranoid she will think people are dying if they holiday in devon

I'm also not keen on saying that someone has 'gone to sleep' when they have died as I have known it to cause sleeping problems with children who start to worry that they may never wake up if they go to sleep.

Me neither. I remember worrying as a child that maybe I wouldn't wake up, or worse was I would but my family wouldn't and I'd be all alone.
Not sure what else you say, died and gone to heaven?

My friend at the yard had to explain to her 3 year old why my big lad had gone, she told him that Mogul had died from old age and that God had made him into a star in the sky and that he would shine down on us. Well had all of us in tears, but the little boy understood...

I overheard a conversation at our yard the day my horse died: a four-year-old to her two-year-old friend - "Nessa's sad today cos Jasper's gone to heaven."
"Do horses go to heaven?"
"I hope so, cos if they don't I'm not going!"
It made me smile!!!

reminds me of the conversation between myself and my children when we lost our old pony nearly 3 years ago
''Where's Juno?''
''She went to heaven''
''why?''
''She was old, and it was her time to go''
''How did she get there?''
''The angels came for her''
''Do horses fly?''
''no''
'How did she get to heaven then if she can't fly''
''The angels are magic, and they make it happen''
''Bet they had to use the stairs!''

Love some of the comments kids come out with!!

We tell my 4yr old daughter that when people or animals die that they have gone over the rainbow and that every time we see one in the sky we can remember all the happy times. She now accepts it as a part of life, always hard explaining it to children but they always say something to make you smile at the time as they are so innocent.

Slightly off the thread. When my old family dog was PTS my mums neighbour little boy who was 5 came over with a card for my mum with a picture of George the dog in a helicopter going to heaven. I thought I was so sweet and grown up. He also came round to say goodbye and gave him a teddy for his journey.

I watch that episode today and all my daughter could say is 'horsey, see horsey' LOL. She loves horses.
