hi all,
i would love to put my mare in foal to a full black irish draught stallion, but i want to a black foal, so would have to be a homozygous black. (homozygous means quarenteed (sp) to always breed what ever that colour is) the one i want is homozygous black. but i want the traditional very heavy bone irish draught, so hard to find as most stallions have been thinned out through the years. i know will take me a few years prob to find this, but just thought i would ask. so if you know of a homozygous black full irish draught, with very heavy bone. please pass on link. thanks

something like him in bone or heavier, just love the bone but clean leg, in a homozygou black.

I think more realistically you should be looking for a stallion that compliments your mares conformation and temperament rather than limiting your choice by putting colour at the top of your list - colour should be waaaay down the list of requirements when looking for a stallion!

i know what you mean, i am breeding years and would not consider a stallion or a mare that doesnt have excellant tempermeant, conformation and ability to do what i want with it. i have 1 black horse he will be 19 this year he was my 2nd horse and have had him since he was 2, but would love and have always wanted a black irish draught, but the old type traditional. if i cant find the stallion i want, i would buy a irish draught, just havent seen the one i want yet. i want the very heavy old type of irish draught with of course great confromation and termpermeant, i dont mind it is a mare, gelding. i am open to all. so if i breed the foal i will be keeping it for myself. so i am open to buying a pure black irish draught very heavy one or breeding to a great black irish draught. really dont mind if foal is different colur it just always wanted a black one. so will wait few years till i get what i am looking for.
its really a very heavy old type irish draught i want, just prefer black. but i do love all colours, as long as it is want i want and colour doesnt matter just a preference really. you know i never really liked grey horses, but i am starting to love a very dark dappled grey irish draughts, plenty of them about too just havent found the heavy bone i want. i have only ever seen one mare that is what i want and it was years ago and she wasnt for sale, but she was a very very heavy old type irish draught. i will get one one day just waiting for the right one or right stallion, as it will be with me for the rest of it's life.
just thought i would ask here bout stallion, but if you know of any foals or mares or geldings like this, please om me. thanks

thanks irish_only, he has great bone, but i am looking for even stronger than that. i know very hard to get, as most irish draught have been thinned out like the friesian for sports. i really want the old plough type not to plough just used that to explain size of one i want. i have only seen one so i know it take a while to find. thanks for helping, my mare is very very strong so if he had of been homozygous black then maybe would have considered as she will pass on alot of her bone.

What colour is your mare? Just because the stallion can only pass on Black genes doesn't mean that you will get a black foal. Eg, if the mare is bay or grey, she could pass on the Agouti (bay) gene or Grey gene to the foal.

I'd e mail the Irish Draught breed society and get their advice. As someone said, colour is a funny thing, and doesn't always go the way that you want.

thanks going to check it out, supose not bothered with colour but would love a black. homozygous mean tested postive to quarentee will alway breed that colour, like you can get homozygous tobainio which means will always breed coloured foals. i have 2 homozygous coloured mares and a yearling colt. my mare is a deep bay. but i wouldnt worry boput colour as long as everything else is what i want, just a preference really. thanks a million for anwsers going check out Beeston Lord Henry now. thank you.

I think Janet George who comes on here breeds ID's - there is a website but I can't remember what its called.

Might be worth dropping her a msg to see if her stallion is suitable - I think he's grey but don't know what he throws.

you know i really do have a thing for dark dapple greys. any pics of your full irish draughts.

Last year in June - just turned 4:

omg he is stunning. i really do love dapple grey. its funny the way you change i never use to like greay horses, but love the dark dapple grey now. more pics please

Janet George has a lovely big gray stallion - Tralee Raj or similiar? but she is very knowledgeable about ID/types/etc and breeds some really nice foals too. Why not pm her?

There is one in the US, one of the few RIDs I would have liked to own :p Don't know if he does AI, but his name is Bridon Belfrey and I'm pretty sure he is homozygous.

However, I would have to agree with what others have said, colour should be low on your list... What is your mare's breeding?

If I remember rightly, greys throw 50% grey stock.

Please remember Charm, a dark dapple grey will fade to white grey in a few years. Our half RID was dappled when we got him, and is now a fleabitten white.

never had a grey horse didnt know a dapple grey would change that much, good to know. my mare is very strong bone her sire is agherlow dams breeding not that well known. but i am not worried if they have top pedigrees as its the conformation, tempermeant and very heavy strong bone i am after, its just for me as a great allrounder i am not in to competitions so really just for me.

will buy a draught if i can just find what i am after, think it will be a few years searching. thanks for all help

If the horse has one grey gene (heterozygous) that is correct, however if it has two grey genes (homozygous) it will have 100% grey progeny. :)

This is fun to play with, you enter the sire and dam's colour's and it works out the pecentage chance of the colours that their foals could be.

Not wanting to sound too much like a scientist but homozygous means the stallion carries two copies of the allele for making black babies. Unfortunately as he can only pass on one of these (because one comes from mum) he can still make other colour foals. It all depends on whether whatever colour mum is is dominant, co-dominant or recessive to black. I don't know what is and what isn't but I can look it up I expect. I love black horses too though so I hope you find what you are looking for :) What you are after sounds beautiful!

Ive only evr seen black offspring from him but dont know if this is guaranteed or not. Gorgeous temprement, the offspring in know have been lovely 'people' too. Not expensive either. Can send the owners detail on if you want?

thanks ozzie that is my dream horse but even more bone than him. i know i am asking for a lot but i am prepared to wait a few year to i get what i want. also Rowenna thanks he is also stunning but not enough bone for me. thanks a million they are very rare to find one as heavy as they have all been thinned out like friesians. i am on the search and will get it one day. thanks
