Icy cold weekend plans

That sounds interesting. Any new rules in particular I should know about? The main one I am aware of is the 2 eliminations leading to having to drop a level rule.

There is a change to the wording on refusals. Obstacles over 30cm ‘ no longer moving forward ‘ this isn’t just directly in front of the jump. , but if the horse comes to a halt a few strides away . Run outs - a horse must clear the flags with head neck and now pelvis . Also changes to jumps with different elements, you are not allowed to pass around the back of an element on route to the next part. Hope that makes sense !

I'm not holding out much hope of it being a cheap fix, oh well! On the plus side had a viewing for my box today and another one next week so fingers crossed that will sell soon. It's all a bit stressful!
Can't wait to get out again, haven't for ages

My giant was supposed to be out jumping on Friday & today but obviously both cancelled. Doesn’t seem to have stopped play completely, both giant & baby pony have been worked.

Baby is looking rather grown up and smart, although obviously a long way to go he looks bigger than I expected him to , the giant also appears to have matured into himself, is he going to be out early this season?

Thank you 😁 Baby pony is about 15.1hh on tiptoes but plenty of presence so photos bigger. Just need to stand him in compost for the next 12months now.

Giant is doing super. We scoped him last summer and on the back of that did a standing laser hobday and gave him an early holiday. He has come back super and is pretty much ready to run now, so yes weather permitting, he will start in March

Asha, those sound like quite major changes to the rules on refusals. You'll be glad to be ahead of the other FJs who have to be brought up to speed in double quick time during the TD's briefing on the day of an event.

My OH is more resigned than well trained to equine stuff invading the house at times, I think! The hay steamer has moved back outside, but the yard hose is now in the downstairs shower room to thaw out.

Did 30 mins of in hand work in walk and some trot with Tammy in the arena today, the going was nicely firm and even. She's a bit stiff atm, but the steady work will help keep her ticking over until we can get out hacking again. The frozen field means she isn't loosening up when turned out, she's mincing about carefully instead.

My weekend plans changed when the big lad decided that a spot of colic was what was needed to perk up his Saturday morning.

Look at this little face. Innocent as anything

Anyway, luckily the vet isn’t too far away and a bit of an anal adjustment and a jab and he was on the mend. He was a bit quiet yesterday but worked up by the end of the day.

I rode the little chap yesterday and he was awesome, as always. He worked on his travers a bit which he finds very exciting.

Big cob seems ok now so still planning to go to our lesson on Tuesday, unless he is still subdued. I’m sure he will be fine. It was quickly caught and addressed and not an impaction.

Bonus was that I had the boys booked in for their flu vacs tomorrow, but the vet was kind enough to do them yesterday while he was there. So saved on the callout fee for tomorrow...bonus!

I forgot. Since he was under the weather I spent about 4 hours this morning spring cleaning his stable. Not the best day for it, given how freezing it was. But I flipped his ridiculously heavy rubber matting, scrubbed the floor, scrubbed the mats and more or less started afresh with his bed.

10 seconds after being put back in there he did the biggest, longest wee. Ungrateful toad 😄

Made up for missing dressage by having a lovely hack out. Not much snow and horses handled what there was brilliantly so was chuffed. Sun shone and it was a lovely day if a little cold. Came back and popped some jumps.

Finally getting a handle on not flapping and kicking too much, although still crept in when they went up a hole. But I feel like I am progressing slowly but surely, not having to’force’ myself to jump now and generally able to manage about once a week. Frequent and small is doing the trick so far.

Getting cabin fever so if weather warms up I’ll go to a small clear round next weekend.

This is what I need to do, force myself to jump little and often. Do you jump alone?

This is definitely the best way that I have found to remove the fear, just keep doing it and one day you'll put them up because you'll think "actually I'm capable of doing higher than this" and you'll look back at the photos of the 60cm courses and think they are tiny!
Can't wait to get back out jumping, so worried I may have lost confidence though as I haven't jumped in a bout a month. I'm just not able to in winter at our yard, the school is commandeered by lessons and any break in between isn't long enough to put jumps out in so I can get a quick school in or a hack.
Then with various lorry issues I haven't been able to go out either! argh.

I jump with a friend which def makes a difference. I much prefer company and she’s very encouraging. Easier to put jumps up and down too! It started out with me making excuses not to, and being a bit anxious, but I realised yesterday that had gone and I feel fine. I wobble if it goes above my comfort range but then I jump smaller again and that settles my nerves.

Aye, it’s taking a long old time I have to say even to get to being ok with 60 odd cms. I know that’s ridiculous but it seems to be what I need to do. And if I can get ok with that height I know I can do the same getting a little bigger in time.

Ooh chippers that’s encouraging, thanks! I get a bit down sometimes at how slow it’s going as I was gunning for BE80 before my confidence went.

Argh it’s just soul destroying isn’t it. I felt sick with nerves even watching Boggle warm up yesterday- I wasn’t even riding!!!!! How is that possible.

I know that if I just went to an 80cm event and cracked on I’d be fine, I am worse training at home somehow and infinitely worse showjumping.

I don’t think it’s anything to do with the broken ankle either, just too long a break from jumping etc.

Oh well... start again, bit by bit. Congrats though Bernster it sounds like you are well on your way to cracking it.

Did anyone manage to ride this weekend? We go about 45 minute hack around the village in a brief window where the ice had thawed, and t was still light enough to get out! Ponies were very fresh and happy to be out!

Nothing like a super-fresh bed to do a great big wee on :D

Michen, Bernster, little and often is definitely the way.... If I have a break from jumping the nerves creep in again. 3 years ago jumping terrified me to the point of physically shaking before x-pole clear rounds. My life- time ambition was to jump the 'big log' on the farm ride. It's about 40 cm high! It was far harder to get from 0-60 than it was to go from 60-90. You'll get there!

I totally agree with this too...

After a few bad falls from my TB mare, I refused to jump at all for quite a few years, but once I got my Mothers day present in 2017 (Fionn the very green connie) I got stuck in and we learnt together, starting with x poles.

At WH yesterday, we had one stop at a scary cow filler, but actually 70 cm seemed quite small for the first time, so that makes me v happy in retrospect...

It is weird how fences literally do seem to shrink. I remember asking my RI how she knew my pony could jump what must have been a 45cm fence. It looked absolutely huge to me.

Competition report....

We were supposed to be going to an IPS show early Saturday morning, but the roads were so icy on Friday I made the call not to risk it, hence we needed a plan B.

We discovered a venue that we love was having WH too on the Sunday afternoon, its further away but motorway most of the way, and all inside including warm up...

Took most of the morning to prettify two grey ponies, but we headed off about 12.

F and Daisy jumped first in the 50cm class and then the 60cm class (which had loads of spreads and was a Cradle stakes and M&M qualifier for the NI Festival at Cavan in April).

He did a super show both times, and jumped two great clear rounds. She looked and slightly swerved at the cow filler at number 2, but jumped it... He only won both classes :o

Then it was my turn, and I probably rode like a numpty. The sand was quite deep so we didn't have a lot of pace, but round 70cm with 1 stop at the cow and 1 down. However everyone else must have had more problems because we ended up 2nd :o

Fionn was a muppet though, constantly shouting for Daisy :(

Then we hung about for the bigger classes, and went back in for the championship....

F and Daisy went and won the whole thing - the Championship :o

So proud.

We think Daisy is an amazing pony, and a beautiful mover, but its lovely that the judge thought the same, and I heard some lovely ringside comments too lol....

Home very late last night, so I hope F isn't too grumpy at school today....
