ID tattooing?

Could anyone give me any info that you know about tattooing pitbulls in the UK?

How's it done? Are they sedated to do it? I've been told they do it on the inside of the foreleg?

Any help/info would be much appreciated :)
 
It is done inside the rear leg - usually under sedation or whilst under anaesthetic when being neutered.

Yep I seen that video earlier. To cut a long story short earlier today some policemen were outside where I live, brought me and dog inside when one stopped me and asked about my dog :eek:

He said he thinks she is a pitbull and is going to get an expert to confirm it. He also said if it is confirmed then she will need to be registered, microchipped and tattooed. I asked about the tattoo and he said it's on the inside of the foreleg, 5 digits and one letter and is done like a normal tattoo :confused:

That's all he said about it. Oh and that all the police dogs have it done too. Think it's an identification of a dangerous breed / dog (police dogs)???
 
Erm, no, my two dogs are ear tatooed, lots of GSDs are, greyhounds too, it's just another form of identification, like microchipping or licensing.

Your dog will need a proper assessment, measured, weighed, temperament tests, to confirm if it is APBT type x

It won't hurt your dog to have it tattooed and as S4sugar says, it can be done on the leg too.
 
My dogs all have it on their inside back legs.
All done under anesthetic and with a tattoo gun which looks similar to a human one.

My understanding is they stay legible much longer than the stamps.
 
Oh right! Thanks, I was just curious how they did it. I've heard of the ear tattooing but not the leg tattooing!

I guess with her being fully grown she would have to be fully sedated to have it done? I haven't had a chance to ask questions yet as the police officer wasn't going in to detail and said if it was ok with me (which it was) he would arrange for an expert to come around and discuss everything with me further.

But now obviously I can't sleep thinking about it all!
 
Pre-empt the police and apply to
your dog warden for a "4B";this will mean neutering/chipping and thigh tattooing under a full anaesthetic.The whole process will cost you around 300 pounds.If you pre-empt ,the whole thing can be done avoiding the dog being seized and taken,which you definitely need to avoid.
 
I used to board a nice red staffie - typy enough to have won two reserve CCs - and his owner moved away after the third time he was asked to prove his dog wasn't a pit bull.

Fortunately he could.

That's frightening, just goes to show anything with a slightly bull type head is at risk.:(
 
Ok.. The police officer told me it wouldn't cost me a penny as it is essential she would have to have it done? Therefore they do it free of charge if I use their vets / tattooist?

She is noticably a fair bit bigger than our pure bred staffie.. Don't have a picture to show the size difference though I don't think. Will have a look!
 
The policeman also said that a pit bull isn't one breed, it is a mixture of breeds. It could be similar to a lab but would be classed as a pit. Basically he said if it's a type of bull breed there is a high chance it would be classed as a pit bull. However he did say he didn't know a great deal more than that which is why he was getting an expert to come out and tell us more.
 
I know nothing about tattooing but just wanted to say good on you for being so calm and rational about it all.

I know if a copper started rambling on about pit bulls and DDA to me I would be a quivering wreck!
 
That's correct, the APBT is not recognised in the UK so there is, helpfully, no breed standard or database, you could have a boxer x lab, staff x whippet, but if it meets the set measurements or displays certain personality traits, it can be classed as a pit bull 'type' in the eyes of the law.

I tried to be as calm as possible! He said by no means did this mean she was going to be taken away from me. He said that if it's ok with me he would get an expert to come and have a look at her to let us know if she is or not. Also that if she is she would need to be registered so the police know where all of the pitbulls and dangerous breeds are living in the Uk. As long as we go by their rules, eg she's to be kept on a lead at all times then they don't have a problem with her staying with us. Obviously if she's dangerous or unpredictable (which she isn't / hasn't shown any signs) then that would be a different story.

Would anyone be able to tell me what the rules are for owning a pit bull in the UK?

I was given her when she was 7 weeks old so back then I was told she was just a staffie, which she looked like (as much as you can tell when they're puppies!)

When the DDA came in pitbulls were outlawed in the uk, those that remained in the country had to be registered, neutered, identified, kept on a lead and muzzled in public and could not have their ownership transferred (i.e could not be sold) any that were deamed dangerous would be pts. That was in 1991, so technically there should be no 'official' pitbulls left alive in the uk!! The above parameters were meant to ensure the breed died out in this country over time. However pitbull blood came in from the usa and ireland, 'irish' staffies became the 'new' pitbull, trying to claim they were a separate breed when in actual fact contained alot of pitbull blood in them. then you have all the indescriminate breeding going on, plus organised dog fighters etc, and you get to a point were who knows which dogs have pitbull blood and which don't! Therefore the police have specialist officers to identify 'pitbull' types, these dogs are identified and the above stipulations are applied again to try to reduce these dogs from breeding in the uk.

With regard to the id I'd have thought microchipping would have been easier and quicker, the only tattoed dogs I've ever dealt with were a fox hound and a greyhound, both were done on the inside of the ear.
 
Looking at the recent goings on on here it could be no where near as easy as you think.

It will cost you out of pocket and you need to get it done before that officer comes back with an expert and a warrant to seize your dog.

Also competitiondiva thanks for that, it's been really informative of what I didn't even have a clue about! I knew they had been banned but didn't know how. Thank you :)

I'll update as and when this 'expert' decides to show up to inform us of what she is. Also on another forum I've asked info from, the only way Tiger can truly be identified as a pitbull is by doing DNA testing, so we'll see what happens!

She`s lovely,but def type enough for you to apply for 4b double quick,and it will cost you around £300 for it all ,never trust a copper by the way..they are never off duty.
How do I know she`s "type" ..well I used to do the ID assessments for my County Council.
