Have just become the proud owner of a little 3.5t box so I'm no longer restricted by having to hire a trailer to get out and I'm starting to make some plans for the year. So in an ideal world how often would you choose to go out and compete vs having lessons or doing other fun outings? My main interest is dressage and I'm hoping having my own transport will help us make some progress by getting out more and helping me lose my competition nerves.

So just wondered what everyone else does and what you would like to do if money and horse fitness wasn't an issue?

it's not just money and fitness, part of it depends on what the best regime is for your horse's personality ;)

My older girl was best if she didn't go anywhere more frequently than once every 10 days to a fortnight, so I had to choose between lessons and shows.

Younger horse doesn't seem to object to going places weekly, so we have a fortnightly (ish) lesson and a show or arena hire in between. I need to keep her going out and about to help her to get braver... I think more than once a week would be too much for her though.

enjoy your new wheels :D

I'm out every weekend in the summer months. Usually dressage one weekend and then two weekends of farm rides, then dressage or a clinic again.

Absolutely love being out at weekends, as does the pony.

That sounds good to me, think OH might feel a little abandoned though. I think in the summer I could get out for some different hacks in the evenings easily enough.

Good point, I guess that'll be trial and error for us. Most we've done is compete once a month with maybe a lesson at instructors yard in the same month! He's a connemara though so loves to be doing stuff, I don't think he'll be fussed about being out every week *fingerscrossed*
