Ideas for carrying tack to/from yard?

We are planning to move my daughter's pony to a yard approx 1/2 mile from our home. They don't keep tack onsite at the new yard so we will need to bring it daily. Saddle is synthetic so not too heavy - however I'm sure after a 10 min walk in each direction it will start to feel heavier than it does at the moment!

Ideally I would like to walk or cycle to the yard, it seems daft to get the car our for such a short journey. Plus I'd like daughter to be able to get to the yard by herself sometimes.

I've been searching online for ideas but can't find anything suitable - I love the plastic saddle carriers with the storage in the middle as they would easily take saddle, bridle and a few brushes, but would there be any way of attaching one of these to a bike? (Teenage daughter is mortified I would even consider this as there is no way she's losing street cred cycling to yard with a brightly coloured chunk of plastic on her bike :D).

Other than that, a saddle carrier with handles seems to be the other choice but I think walking with that would become pretty heavy and annoying after a while.

Any ideas? :)

Trollie ?

Im 17 and would have to cover my face to hide the shame ;) But a friend has a pull along trollie thing , big enough for saddle, brushes etc. that she pulls the 15 min walk from her home to the yard :)

 I think daughter would rather ride bareback than be seen dead with a trolley! However it is a great idea and I cant wait to suggest it to her later. I have seen little trailers attached to bikes but again I cant see her entertaining the idea.

Maybe if I found a One Direction endorsed trolley she might consider it ;)

;) I can understand why lol ! maybe get a bag, we have an Ikea bag for life thing ... HUUUGE that can fit our saddle in, at least then she can sling it over her shoulder and perhaps a seperate bag for brushes etc ?

:DIm sure everyone would be jealous of the One direction Trolley wielding teenager

Add some rucksack handles to the saddle bag, carrying thinks on your back seems a lot easier. And perhaps get her one of those old looking bikes with a big basket on the front? Bridle and brushes will easily fit in.

:D Hehe, she is going to kill me if she reads this!

I think TB meant something like this

Oh that makes more sense, I was thinking trolley in the old-lady-shopping-bag-on-wheels type thing! That looks a really sensible and practical solution (which probably means she will hate it).

I've actually just found this which might be more suitable, just need to work out if the saddle would fit, but it can be used on a bike or by hand

Unless she wants to carry her saddle and bridle I can not see any other way to transport them.

I've used a wheelbarrow before now.

You can get a trolley that carries everything.

I would be telling her to find a way to transport her things, something she is happy with.

Ok I may get shot down for this but, I used just put my saddle on my on my steering wheel and bridle etc in a bag pack. Never a issue at all. May sound a bit iffy but was ideal for me and I had to cycle for about 30 min.

I know what her answer would be - my car!

I did think about whether it's possible to just ride with the saddle over the handlebars, and it would only be a short ride down some quiet lanes, so maybe she should give that a try first before I go forking out for something else?

Something like this http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_categoryId_165476_productId_724057_langId_-1?cm_mmc=GooglePPC-_-Google%20Product%20Search-_-Bike%20Parts%20%26%20Accessories%2FChild%20Bike%20Seats%20%26%20Trailers-_-Halfords%20Single%20Buggy%20Child%20Bike%20Trailer%202009&source=ppc&adtype=%7Badtype%7D&%7Bcopy:_$ja%7D&%7Bifdyn:_$$ja=tsid:35588%7D%7Bifpe:_$$ja=ad=pe%7D&_$$ja=cgid:2677037644%7Ctsid:35522%7Ccid:74434564%7Clid:51330902764%7Cnw:%7Bifsearch:search%7D%7Bifcontent:content%7D%7Ccrid:10353946684%7Cbku:1&gclid=CI32-Lab7bcCFQ_LtAodV2YABA

Woops don't think that link worked, still haven't got the hang of this I phone malarkey !

That's ok, I copied and pasted it. I think a bike trailer would be best but maybe the luggage type. I just need to work out dimensions to see if saddle would fit!

Weebarney is this the item you were recommending? (I just shortened the URL so not sure if it's the same item)

Caramac, perhaps an email to rolltack might answer that, they might have an estimated lifespan or a guarantee but I'm not sure. I only heard about them through an office friend. They were handing out leaflets and he took one to give to me. It's a pretty cool idea, but the wheels do look small.

Get a pannier rack for the back of your bike, plonk saddle on that. Secure with a luggage net.

Or one of these? Bet your daughter will think this is dead cool. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_816427_langId_-1_categoryId_236255

Tons of street cred, I cant see her having a problem with that at all. Do the plants come as standard? :D

I've actually just sent her a picture of this one (great design, she can take her tack, the dog and me on roller skates ) http://www.innerwolf.co.uk/sport-wagon-bike-trailer-medium.h

I'm thinking after she's seen the above, any other suggestion I make will be considered more favourable!

Thanks everyone for the ideas, they are great.

I've cycled with my tack for 14 years now. It's easy.

Have a rear rack on the pushbike.

I use a big square numnah, folded into 4 and then laid across the rack. Sit saddle on top of numnah, facing forwards. Secure saddle with a bungee from back of carrier, along side of saddle, around the pushbike saddle, down other side of horse saddle and hook onto other side of back of carrier.

Then a big TescoBagForLife (reinforced material ones, not plastic one) for bridle, headcollar, rope, dandy brush and hoof pick.

I'm naughty and cycle with the bag slung over the handlebars, dangling over the front wheel.

As daughters are precious, I'd recommend a small rucksack instead for bridle, etc.

I use a garden plant trolley for my stuff. It has 4 wheels, so makes it more stable. I put my tack in it in the morning and in the evening I soak his hay at home and take that round instead - as have no water in the field. The trolley is made of metal mesh so my hay drains as I walk round to the field! For me, it saves my crappy back getting any worse by carrying things.

I had to do the same for a few weeks last summer when car broke and used the above. I borrowed a friends as was only temporary and her little one had just got their own bike so no longer needed. It fitted everything in, saddle, numnahs, brushes and kept dry and no chance of anything coming out. Maybe if you know anybody with one or try ebay.

this is my solution:

go riding:
walk to the stables with a head collar or bridle, go and catch the horse, bring him back to the house, saddle up and ride...

whenever u finished riding:
bring the horse back to the house, unsaddle, then either lead the horse back to the stables or ride bareback...

Hi, we had that problem when we moved to a place with no locked tack room.

I don't know how much stuff you got and as suggested, we carried our saddle in a cute saddlebag (to keep it clean as well) and got a "triagle plastic thingy" from Robinsons (maybe £23) and sorry don't know the terminology lol where you put the saddle on top and all the other stuff inside it. I found it easy to carry, plus you got something to place your saddle once in the stable.

xx
