Ideas on how to help my 2yr male rotti gain weight.x.

I have two rotti's a dog & a bitch, they live mostly outside unless it's cold. My dog has suddenly lost alot of weight, he was a very bulky dog with admitedly a little extra warmth ;)
He was fed on Science Plan, up until we bought our bitch 12months ago when it proved too expensive for them both, we tried them on Bakers but that sent Simmy (dog) bonkers according to my vet it's due to all the colours in it, then after talking to some friends we tried them on Betta Puppy Large Breed this was ok through the summer but now the cold has set in Simmy's weight has dropped, Sasha (bitch) seems fine, she is very lean and has never been a big girl (more like the supermodels of the human world).
I have been adding plain porridge oats made with water, brown rice, lamb mince, and any other meats we have from our Sunday dinners to their meals, Simmy even likes carrots and potatoes even if there not cooked!!!!
Any help would be gratefully recieved as i can't think of anything else.

Have you tried the raw meat diet. Both my Girls suffer with holding weight and I have found that this has helped them both.

I feed a mix of chicken pieces ie wings thighs minced beef and fish they also got a whole raw egg once a week and veg with the mince.

When I got Shades 2 weeks ago I moved him on to raw as well. I would love to have my cats on it as well but only one will eat it. He is a bit of a pig and eats any thing from cake to raw veg :eek:

Not sure their user names but there are a few girls on here that are experts on the raw diet or do a search on here Im sure there are lots of posts about it :D

PS can we have some pics of your pooches :D
 
back to the science plan i think or another dog food of the same quality! bakers is full of c*** yes it might be expensive but cheaper than the vets and a sick dog. pro plan is quite good.

neutering may help if he is not done, esp if the bitch is also entire as this can play havox with a males weight esp when the bitch is nearing in and jsut out of season.

I would agree with Katie lou and say fish 4 dogs however if u found the science plan expensive u will def find the fish 4 dogs expensive and it only comes in 12kg bags.
I would say maybe skinners duck and rice with tripe mixed in, and vege oil, the tripe and vedge oil are good weight gainers.

I also just tried some autarky its holistic/hypoallergenic, and very good value but I would also def be adding tripe/glug of veg oil, just buy a chest freezer and plug it inot a shed, and pull the frozen blocks out daily to defrost them or get a microwave for outside, I have doubled my outside dogs food for winter.
 
Cayla beet me to it, I was also going to say if the boy isn't castrated yet this will definately help, also check what level of warmth you are able to offer when they are living out, straw as bedding is very good for insulation, make sure there is sufficient draft exclussion, if you can add a heat lamp then this may help, if he's not using calories to keep himself warm then he should hold his weight better. I like the autarky diet too as it's hypoallergenic and not expensive like science plan. You could also try adding some pasta (cooked) to his daily ration some added carbs may help for slow release energy keeping his weight longer? Also feeding little and often, the more feeds you can fit in in a day gives him more chance to utilise the feed given, so split his daily ration into as many separate meals as possible. Good luck.
