If she were yours, what would you do to her?

Hi :)

I need to do something to smarten the Puzmonster up a bit. In my eyes she's the most beautiful horse in the world, obviously, but I really don't know what the hell to do with her hair.

Her tail is, well you can see in the photos, an absolute MASS of hair. Its always stained because she poos on it, although I haven't yet shampooed it coming out of winter so it will brighten up a bit. Her mane is quite long, shorter nearer her ears as in the winter she rubs it on the fence and has pulled some out. Its in a rubbish condition, really really dry and manky. And her feathers... mum was a TB so she's never going to grow the really big fluffy feathers I want her to..her fronts are better than her backs but not by much!

So, if she was yours, what would you do? I don't want to hog because I love her forelock and really REALLY don't want to lose that - but how do I manage everything else?! Chop it off, trim it, clip it, shorten it, care for it better?

Be as criticising as you like, I don't object (my instructor hates Puzzle's head so I'm not sure you could be much more blunt!!). I am considering taking her showing this summer in hand, but thats not much of a consideration because we'd literally be going for the experience, not to win.

Thanks in advance!

X

Awww,
I think puzzle is very nice.

Well if you dont want to hog and pull tail.
I can only say, shampoo may do wonders for the tail:D

You could hog her mane the way fjords are done, with the thick mohawk type crest and full forelock. I think her tail is gorgeous: just needs washing and conditioning. I use baby oil on Hippo's mane - just a handful once a week to soften it.

Very pretty horse:)

She looks a sweetheart. I would pull and tidy her mane which looks nice by the way at least it all falls correctly. Trim all her feathers up. Leave the tail it is so lovely and full, just shorten it, not a lot though. A good shampoo will do wonders.

I would pull her mane and pull her tail, if she will let you. Else use a rake. Trim her legs/feathers with scissors and a comb.

If she were mine since she wont grow feather and I would give her a tidy up. Pull/Trim her mane to maybe hand length so as not to bee too short. Use thinning scissorcs through her feathers to tidy them up and trim the top of her tail. Doesnt have to be completly pulled but tidy up the sides and take some length of it. I agree with keeping her forelock but just give it a trim in a 'V' type style to shape her face.

I think she is gorgeous!! I would love to get my hands on her mane though to tidy it up and pull it shorter, but thats just me I like short tidy manes!

With her tail I would just invest in some good shampoo - maybe thats marketed for grey horses - and just keep washing! I might get shot down in flames for this, but I have used it on my horses tail when he first arrived and was very dry and not in great condition - I used some of the dove leave in conditioner for human hair :p worked a treat! Head and Shoulders shampoo is also very good for tails as it has a stripping quality in their which my hair dressers told me is very good to use if you have dyed your hair and hate the colour!!!

If she were mine i would pull her mane and tail and trim up her feathers, keep her all neat and tidy.

I cant be doing with hairy horses
I think they look lovely but i just couldn't deal with all that fur, when i had a cob he was fully clipped and hogged all year

I would pull mane and tail, clip legs closely and under her jaw, you then just have to wash her, plait up the mane and she is ready to go out to some shows.

Agree with this ^^
Mane just needs a good pull - the sort of length that it is behind her ears.
Feathers all trimed up & the same under her jaw
Good shampoo and cowboy magic in that tail & shorten it a tad.

Then we need pics!:D

I dont think shes hairy enough to be left hairy iykwim?

Id have the feathers and beard off, tail pulled and banged, and the mane at least pulled (maybe even hogged when shes older)

If you are wanting to show you can either hog and clip feathers or pill her mane and trim the feathers or leave her natural lol

CHAPS hunter type ones - either hog/pull

hunter classes - pull

CHAPS native - leave natural.

I'd say she was more of a hunter though xx

I'd pull mane and tail and trim legs if she were mine!

I'm with 3beasties! She is sort of something and nothing at the moment as far as "au natural" her TB mum is not helping the feathers so get them off, wash that tail, cut it just below hocks when carried and pull the mane to a tidy length.

Oh Ceders - she really is lovely.

If she were mine, the tail would be sitting just below the hocks, and her mane would be pulled nice a short.

I would leave her feather for the moment until summer is really upon us, then I'd clip them off.

For condition generally add some oil to her feed.

awww shes lovely. I would trim her heels and legs ,pull her mane and put into plaits and plait her tail too. She'll look very smart.

She's lovely :). IMO she's not quite 'cobby' enough to leave natural or hog, looks more of a hunter type. I'd trim her up like Amymay suggested- think she's look very smart trimmed :)

Agree with others, not hairy enough for a natural look & hair is so much work. I'd pull mane & tail, trim legs & trim tail too.
Mines somewhat similar, conniextb so not hairy enough for a natural connie look. However I have occasionally grown her mane long, but end up pulling again as it looks a state unless washed weekly & can't do proper plaits long.

Just think that when you have a tail that full, pulling it leaves it something and nothing..everyone comments on big horseys tail so I'm leaving it..will see what the judges think when I show him working hunter.

Looking at the pics, have you trimmed some of the heel feather off already? Personally for me she appears to be an 'inbetweeny', it would very much depend on her action, if you were to trim her all up and pretend she was a hunter (say), would she still move like a cob? that wouldn't do her any favours, nor would trimming her and pretending she is a cob if she lacks proper cob type. If she has any knee action then I suggest that she is better left untrimmed, just tidied up a bit, encourage her feathers, I wouldn't pull her tail but thin it out a little with a tail rake from the under layers rather that the top or sides if necessary, shorten her mane and trim her jawline and show her in the 'native traditional/vanner' classes, she is not a traditional cob type.

If she was mine I'd pull mane short, trim and pull tail and clip feathers off. But that's my personal preference, do whatever you want with her, she won't care!

I have the issue with my Tank. He grows a double sided mane and it has whorls in it so, when pulled neat and short, it sticks up.

He has a keloid scar on his poll, so he can't be hogged....

So I have the mohawk look.

But I think Puzzle would look lovely hairy or neatly pulled - depending on what you wanted to do.
