If this was your Pony WWYD - getting desperate now

He looks fit and healthy. If anything a little overweight!

Only when he is asked to do anything more than walk, he explodes as if to try to get me off or if on lunge to say no he doesn't feel comfortable.

He was put on a diet due to being on the verge of obese! I followed advice of others on this one and am now paying for it by the looks of things : (

Glad to hear you got your vet coming out & it sounds as if he is well regaurded in the area.
What i would say is if you are still not happy ask for a second opinion even if it's from the same practice,it never hurts to get another pair of eyes & brains on the case & sometimes it can just give them the kick up the bum they need to get to the bottom of the problem! Be firm & keep us updated.good luck.xx

You're doing the right thing by getting the vet back out. The pony needs to be seen by a trained professional not some numpty who thinks you can judge a horse's state of health by its eyes  If you don't get any luck with the current vet, then definitely start pushing for a second opinion / get him to another. However, if you push for a full work up, I hardly think your current vet will fail to oblige in the circs. Good luck.

Only because you haven't been back to your vet!

OP sounds to me like you are being fleeced good and proper. How much money has this woman taken from you??

I am HORRIFIED that anyone would proceed with a "horse communicator" in this way. As for being given the all clear to get back on by this woman...I'm disgusted. Not having a go at you OP am more furious with this woman for believing she can treat your horse for you and convincing you of that!

I find it hideously unethical and downright irresponsible, if not cruel. If she wants to market herself in this way she should be making it clear it's a bit of fun, NOT a cure-all!

Get the poor lad back to the vet pronto and let him proceed as he would have done all those months ago. Also, if the problems she "diagnosed" were correct, wouldn't this have shown up in the blood tests??

Not much makes me p|ssy but this really does. Poor, poor horse!

I completely agree (for both ACs and iridology).

Any advice you were given to get weight off him, if he was obese, was justified - obesity has all manner of negative effects and the extra weight won't be doing him any favours. It's just the method of dieting which may have been the problem. Personally I prefer to feed lots of low quality forage to mine rather than limit the amount of high quality forage (i.e. cut with straw, soaked coarser hay etc) and to increase the amount of exercise (difficult in your situation obviously). It's something to keep in mind for the future :)

BTW, if he lost weight during the diet, his saddle fit will have changed - it could be the blindingly obvious that caused these issues in the first place.

Just to address the balance, I used Adam for years until I moved.
He treated Stiggy, and then later on my mare after an horrendous bout of choke, and then an injured hock joint (which he DID sent her to Liphook to be flushed).
Can't personally fault the guy....

I should correct myself here really - I think the problem is that it looks like the vet has been out of the loop altogether, so the vet cannot be the problem :o

Thank you so much everyone. You have all been great.

With regards to his saddle, it hasn't been checked but I would have thought if it was his saddle then he'd be ok on the lunge without tack? The problem now is a saddle fitter won't be able to check the saddle with me riding because as soon as we go into trot he explodes!
Will it be beneficial just to get someone out to check the fit without me riding?

If the horse has lost a significant amount of weight, then assuming the saddle fitted before, you can almost guarantee it won't fit now. Whether the horse would be fine on the lunge without the saddle would depend on how badly the muscles were damaged. There could still be pain from bruising, muscle wastage, tight muscles etc. These things don't go away just because the saddle was removed 5min earlier. Though logically you would expect to see an improvement between horse lunged in tack and horse lunged without tack. I do feel there's,more going on with your horse than a badly fitting saddle though.

Don't panic just be blunt with them and don't let them drag you round the houses before getting a diagnosis. They know what they are talking about but from previous experience sometimes drag it out longer than needed. Some owners I guess like to cover all bases where as others have limited time or funds and just need the essentials and fast diagnosis.

Hi.

A little update on my pony. Vet came today, examined him and watched him being lunged where he bucked and bolted alot. He is very sore in his back and he suspects kissing spine.

Booked him in for xrays next Tuesday. Very nervous but glad something is being done.

Do you know, I am useless with these kind of things and I have not read this thread before, but reading through I was starting to think possible KS over ulcers, your vet will investigate this fully and talk you through it all, but remember aswell pain can cause all sorts of physiological and metabolic changes, which could have contributed to the cribbing, may even have had a knock on effect and caused ulcers, and would be directly relative to the blood results. Its going to take time OP but thankfully the vet has seen him at his 'worst' and is now taking this matter very seriously and is planning a full investigation. Any good vet worth their salt will talk you through everything to make it 'not so scary' as possible. There are also a number of posters on HHO that have been through this and come out the other side with rideable horses. Hope you have your boy insured x Good luck and keep us updated.

OP obviously not good news as such but if you're anything like me it'll be a relief to know what the problem is so you can move forward. fingers crossed that you get a positive resolution

No not good news really but I do feel a sense of relief to know that something is being done now.

Vet was great today.

Thankfully my boy is insured and I hope we can get to the bottom of this and get him on the mend.

Thanks again everyone, you have all been great. Will keep you updated.

Xxx

Proper work up by vets, saddle fitter and farrier out to see him and back to add lib hay until a proper diagnosis and treatment plan is in place.

Good to hear you are getting things sorted now but just a word of caution here - if the vet says this has been the problem all along you are at the end of your time with insurance. Its maybe worth mentioning this to the vet as you only have a year from the first report of the problem.

Just make sure you have checked this in case you end up with a big bill that insurance wont cover :(
