So, I need to get something as an everyday car but that can pull a trailer....

Trailer max weight is 2,700kg

Max budget of £20k

VW Tourareg or Landrover and why please

I do under 10,000 miles per year

Trailer would go out on average once every 2 weeks

The VW DSGs autos are lovely to drive generally, let alone towing with one.

I've been a passenger in a Touareg auto with two 600kg+ horses on the back and it was a dream. Decent boot space too.

Love my mercedes glc220d (I have the sport rather than AMG as smoother ride), tows brilliantly. I roll the field with it and do 20,000 miles a year in it.

I tow an ifor 505 up steep hills on quantocks and across fields.

Thanks for that..
Excuse my ignorance ...DSG?

I'd love a Discovery but you've summed up my thoughts exactly

We have a VW Tourareg, it's a fabulous towing car!! It's a great all round car too....but it's thirsty!!!! Only downside. Ours is 10yrs old...the newer versions might be better.

Audi Q7 is basically the same car and less thirsty I'm told! Friends have one x

I thought that but with a VW we do know a good mechanic
Our local garage dealt with my old disco (it spent more time with him than with me!) And he now looks after the rexton, the only problem at all is that it can take a little longer to get parts

out of the 2 you mentioned I would pick the Touareg every day. Meant to be incredibly good towing cars

We have a VW Amarok. Tows like a dream and fiancé used it for years as his every day car too before he got a company car. Not as horrendous as many on fuel either (my 15 year old VW polo probably gets less mpg these days 🙈)

We have a livery who has a Rexton, the 4WD failed and she couldn't find a local garage who would touch it.
She did eventually get it sorted but it took months.

We have a 2019 Toureg and its an amazing car! Really love it!

Ours isn't too thirsty - we get 45ish MPG on the daily running around and its a dream to drive.

You could also look at the Audi Allroad? A little older but its the same engine as the Toureg.

I've got a 2018 Rexton and I'd recommend them for towing. Alot of car for the money and tows like a dream with 3.5t towing capacity. They come with a 7 year warranty but worth checking for service history if you buy second hand to ensure the warranty is still valid. I've not had problems with getting parts etc and use a local garage who are authorised to do Ssang Yong repairs and servicing but they aren't a dealership.

I had a VW Touareg 14 plate R line, the vehicle was lovely to drive, never missed a beat. I towed with it at least once a week, every week. I only towed 1 horse usually but have had a flatback trailer stacked with round bales behind it and you'd never even know it was there.

We had fuel cards so not sure what it's like on fuel but it would defo be on the heavier side. Lots of technical/electrical stuff on it so I imagine if any of that went wrong it would be expensive but for the 3 years I had it we didn't have any issues with it.

Same here. I’ve now got a Ssangyong Musso which is also brilliant.
Garage just up the road is a Ssangyong dealer and services etc though and I’ve never had problems getting parts.

We’re on our third Touareg and, yes, it’s great for towing. However one word of warning about them - our last one had a lovely full sunroof. One day all the electrics failed on the dashboard. It turned out the sunroof had been leaking and water had got in. Apparently it’s quite well know in the trade. We dried it out and sold it. The new one doesn’t have a sunroof!

I went with the Mercedes ML350, it can tow 3.5t with ease.

I figured if I was spending so much I might as well get something ‘nice’, plus they all seemed fairly balanced in fuel thirstiness and cost of tax etc…

I don’t do that much mileage mind, as I work from home.

Paid a tenth of that for my Hyundai Santa Fe. For that money it was super-high mileage, but it's a great car and still going strong.
It compares well with a Disco - bigger boot and decent fold down seats to give 7 if you need them, but uses much less fuel, especially towing.
Not a 'real' 4WD - it only kicks in when necessary, but being honest how many off road miles do we actually do? It's enough.
Mine's 12 years old. Not sure what the newer ones are like.

For the last 7 years I've had a passat alltrack estate to tow with and hubby has used it as his day to day car. We have loved that car: roomy to throw kids, equipment, and god knows what else in; incredibly fuel efficient we could get 60mpg or 30 when towing but it was limited to 2.2t towing so I would only use it tow 1.
I've just swapped to a GLC same as @meesha and it's a nicer drive, not much thirstier and tows 2.5t so I can consider putting a second on now.

Of your options I would go Touareg every time as I think you just get a nicer level of quality and VW reliability for the money but, if I didn't need a massive towing capacity I would consider something smaller to save on my daily fuel costs.

I’m currently looking at towing vehicles and wondered about a Toureg or Tiguan. Would love a toureg for the towing capacity but wasn’t sure if it would be efficient as a day to day car…would you be able to share the model you have so I can have a look at it. Many thanks 😊

We’ve got a 2020 R-line Touareg and it’s fabulous. It does 45mpg so much less thirsty than I’d feared. My first long journey in it was towing two horses halfway across the country and it was a dream. The only downside is insurance and vehicle excise duty are both expensive (we’ll be paying the ‘expensive car’ levy for another couple of years).
