I wouldn’t spend 20k on a Land Rover. Super tow cars but in that price bracket you’ll be walking into issues.

Paid less than 20k for mine. Was well below the average for mileage, full service history, one owner. Had it nearly 3 years and * frantically touching wood * never had a moment's bother. Just had it mot & service last week £455. My SIL has the VW got it at 3 and it's never out the garage. Luck of the draw really.

Thanks for that..
Excuse my ignorance ...DSG?

I'd love a Discovery but you've summed up my thoughts exactly
We've got a DSG gearbox which is super smooth but the downside is they're VERY expensive to sort if they go wrong. We were quoted £6k+ for a replacement but thankfully another a garage worked out it was an electrical fault which wasn't as expensive to fix, but still enough to put me off having a DSG again

I looked at the Tiguan and went for a test drive in one last year in the attempt to cut down my fuel costs etc. I'm on my 4th Disco, I love them for towing but not their repair bills. I didn't like the gearbox in the Tiguan, it could just be that particular one but the boot capacity was poor too.

VW Touareg, def. Nice as a car, great as a tow car. A disco is fabulous at towing and nice enough as a car but nowhere near as reliable as a VW.

Or... A Corsa and a 3.5t (assuming just one horse). 4x4 are so expensive to run and repair, and a pita if you live anywhere with narrower streets and small parking spaces. This actually worked out cheaper for me and a lot more convenient.

We have had many Landroversover the years, yes they are lovely in theory, but when things go wrong…

I needed a towing vehicle, but not to tow a horse trailer, just a normal 12’ x 6’ double axle one, looked at the Tiguan, yes very nice but the equivalent Toyota Rav4 was £3k, that’s what we bought, I’ve had it three years and it hasn’t missed a beat. It is probably older than you’re looking for, it’s 2011.

If you buy a Landrover, pay £10k as you'll need the other £10k for repairs. Lovely to drive and tow with but spend more time in the garage than on the road.

VW Touareg - only heard positive things. Friends who have them rave about their cars.
I may have been jolly lucky but my first landrover Discovery lasted 21 years with minimal 'mishap or lameness', on the 2nd which is now 9 years old and mostly the same, a couple of niggles with the computer recently which was a pain - yes they tow like a dream!

Like all cars, Touaregs are great until they aren’t. Just don’t get an older one with high mileage (over 100k) and go for the v6 or V10 engine. We replaced suspension, complete drive shaft, all springs (twice), mass fly wheel, new electric window drivers side and the air con and demist never worked. Had prob with the sun roof leaking and the drains blocked constantly leading to water coming into the car. The sills also filled with water because the drains are completely rubbish. Real design fault. We also had electric windows stop working and one by one the air vent knobs fell off. Despite all this - they are superb tow vehicles, but our last year of ownership just saw a massive number of bills. They are thirsty but anything that size will be. They are so comfortable and great to drive but after 10 years/139k miles we gave up fixing it after it died on the motorway last month and have just bought a Volvo XC 90. Ours VW was a 2006 and was £600 odd to tax, so check out on auto trader which model to get as some are high tax. I only tow one 15hh in a 505 so have more wriggle room on weight. I will miss the Touareg for towing, but I wont miss rebuilding it … 🤣
