If you leave food on the side is it still there when you get back?

Lost 2 loaves of bread last week or so, so now leave bread in larder. Dogs don't live un kitchen but they have access to it and livingroom if I am at home or not in bed if that makes sense. Well took Teal in garden to do some training got back and found Dylan eating the chicken for tonight! Not happy. It's not even something I can stop as they never do it when I'm close by, at least OH can stop blaming Teal! Anyone have dogs they obv don't feed enough!

My Grey isn't allowed in the kitchen at all and knows it. We always close the door too.

But he is a major thief, i left some allsorts on the table next to the sofa left the room for a pee, came back he is happily munching them, with that look on his face like he doesn't know what his mouth is doing.

Obviously though the sweets got up and ran into his mouth.

Nope it would be gone the second you turn your back. Dex will even out his paws on the work surface when I am there- despite knowing it is not allowed. means the kitchen is always clean now tho

Mine wouldn't dare touch anything on work top or tables...if it's on the floor its dogs if it's higher than floor it's mine. Takes new additions a while to know the rules but I don't do dogs begging when we're eating and I certainly won't allow them to steal food. I don't need to teach these rules btw...Sidney the 'police' dog of the pack does it for me, he won't tolerate any bad behaviour and will sort out any offending mutt!!:D

Yes - Yellow Dog wouldn't dare touch anything that wasn't his. He only eats food if its in his bowl or if he's 'told' he can have it. Bear was the same. I didnt train either of them really, they just were like it though I did have to tell them no a few times when they were pups. When Bear was probably about 4 my niece left a plate of party food on the floor and we didn't notice. Bless her Bear just watched it from a distance but didn't make a move towards it.

If I'm in the house but not in the room, yes. Probably.

If I leave the house, no, probably not!

things are safe from the jack russells (funny, that) but not from the lurker, who is Theify McThief. He's also careful enough to leave bowls and mugs upright and perfectly clean, so it doesn't even look as though he's touched them...

probably not, although Throp is much better than Hector was i still avoid leaving food within reach. I went to answer the door once and left my lunch (sandwich & jam tart) on dining table thinking it was safe, came back to foil tray and few crumbs :( .

With the whippets, NO WAY! it would be gone. Any other dog in the household and its safe, I often leave me tea on the floor at work near regan if I have to go check a patient or answer the phone and she never touches it, and we all know how greedy rotts are:D

Yep, can leave meat/fish etc out to defrost on the worktop and he won't touch it whether I'm in the house or not.

You can also put your dinner on the floor (telling him to leave it) go out of the room and he won't touch it. He does sometimes try it on with begging and looks at you in that hopefully optimistic 'please, please, please' kind of way but if you tell him 'no begging' he sort of shrinks his ears down and looks away - tho peeps again when he thinks you're not looking!

No I wouldnt chance it Diesel & Darcy are dustbins and so they are never left alone with a temptation. When cooking and eating they are told to go to their beds and sometimes then will sneak to the door for a crafty look.

Our two wouldn't touch anything that's left - have left a pack of biscuits on the low coffee table before now and it'll be there all day and not touched. However, if the younger one 'happens' to knock any food off the table with her tail and then it is on the floor - well, that's hers! Lol. Our older dog wouldn't touch any thing though but then he's very fussy and is suspicious of food (give him a rotten bit of rabbit though...... lol). Our previous dog was terrible though (lab x) and would nick anything she could. She once ate about half of a very rich chocolate and (strong) whiskey cake that was stupidly left on the kitchen table!! She certainly didn't feel too well afterwards! She used to be a swine for nicking booze though - she liked champers and once when I had a party the silly mare drank a shot of absinthe that someone took their eye off!!!! She was a bit of a strange dog!!!

The English Bull terrier is too small to reach but sadly the Dalmatian is not.

He is a stress head though and hates being left and I will often find things he has taken upstairs and hidden in my bedroom - unopened bag of ferret food and a melon being his last two.

He will also take things out of the sink if the mood takes him, very carefully and rarely breaks anything but a little disconcerting to come home to random plates and mugs on the floor and a guilt ridden spotty grinning like a loon.

I once had a rescue Dalmatian who had been taken in by the police as had been living on the streets. He had obviously been starving and had real issues with food - he couldn't cope if any food was left out in the kitchen - fruit, sugar bowl, butter dish anything vaguely edible he would have. As he was a big dog he could reach high and far back on the work tops. My kitchen had never been so clean or organised and ended up having a very minimalist look! He was an amazing thief, if you had food on your lap or in your hand he could walk past, take a deep breath and before you could blink it would be gone - it was almost like he could inhale it!

I walk a Lab and a Collie and in the room where their beds are is the open bag of dog food but they never touch it - my two would have wolfed the lot as soon as my back was turned.

My border collie won't touch anything that isn't hers. The JRT....? probably wouldn't think twice but we don't give them the opportunity

A selection of things which have proved in the past that food is not safe left alone with mine:

A kilo of half cooked mince while it was still on the hob - I had nipped to the loo.

A rock hard frozen loaf of bread - I had left it defrosting while I nipped to Tesco.

Mum's Christmas turkey

A small child's sarnie, plucked expertly from her hand while running past her at 40mph on the beach.

He's a bit better now :o

Just for you SU - on Sunday I caught Will with his paws on the work top licking cheese crumbs.....his face was a picture. He got down (slowly) and slinked away......father like son. BTW didn't say a word my prescence was enough.

All food safe in this house at all levels but I have to stop the kids 'dropping/giving' ''ahem'' food for Ebby, who knows if food is on the floor, waits for me to say 'hoover'! I did catch her once on the work top, that once was enough, she learnt her lesson (strong words were said)!!

^^ definitely that for mine. I can put a plate of food down right in front of them and leave the room to get something I've forgotten but I generally say "I pity the fool" in my best Mr T voice as I leave and they do leave it alone. If I'm not here though, no, any food in reach would meet an untimely end at the hands of one of the boys - probably within few short minutes because you could bet they would have been scoping it out already.

With Dougal, no even if you were there it would be gone!

Tink is quite good, I can leave my toast on the sofa and she may be standing looking longingly at it, but she doesn't try to take it any more.

If I left the house it might be a different story, but we leave meat defrosting that she could get to if she tried but it seems laziness wins over hunger. :D

My old dog would have anythng we left out, so I've been conditioned to put food out of the way. My schnauzer cross is quite good and doesn't usually touch anythng, the same can't be said for the jrt x though!

If I've left the room or gone out to garden (ie, still on property!) then yes its safe, and I often leave a plate of food at dog height or on floor and its safe. If I leave the house NO tilly will open any cupboard (and the fridge now!) to steal food.
