If you re-homed/rescued a dog, where did you get it from?

The 2 I have now are both rescues, one from Paw Prints Dog Rescue in Rugby (they take death row dogs from the council pound) The other one is from Romania, I didn't rescue her myself but got her from the home she went to when she came to England; that home didn't work out so I said I'd foster her for 2 weeks - that was about 8 months ago.
We've just done her DNA which shows she is made up of 24 differnt breeds, most of them hunting & guarding breeds, which explains a lot!

Sorry, just seen the 'not rescue from abroad' comment. I shall stop posting :)

That first one looks just like Zak from this side. ?

I'd be looking for a new vet surgery! Small animal vets are 10 a penny round here ,a surgery on practically every corner.

Fortunately, there are lots of vets there so we can avoid her, but what a thing to say, no apology, total turnaround from what she said on Thursday, I stood there gobsmacked then told her it was outrageous to tell clients such awful news with nothing to back it up and she should re-consider what she says in a big way. Bonkers.

It’s a mixed practice, the horse is with them too but we tend to use the RVC these days as everyone else on the yard does. The only reason I’d consider staying with the small animal section is because they usually have appointments on the same day which other smaller practices can’t offer.

If I wanted a particular breed I’d look at the various breed rescues. If not I’d just scour the local rescue centres and rescue fb pages.
My secondhand dogs in the past came from the police; from a shepherd who sadly died suddenly leaving eight sheepdogs needing urgent homes; and a run on from a breeder. The failed police dog was utterly nuts and a complete handful her entire life but the other two turned into two of the most straightforward and easy dogs I’ve ever known.

My Mum's came from a rescue/rehoming place, he has a lot of issues but nothing terrible and it doesn't seem to bother her. We've had a lot of older run-ons from breeders with very few bad experiences.

If you want an easy life do not take on anything houndy or pointery. I took mine on 12 years ago and much as he is a very sweet dog, his hound tendencies have totally governed our doggy dynamics ever since.

Very ashamed to say ours are all from the same Romanian rescue - I know it's not something generally supported here.

However, I hope you find a dog that will fit you ?
Mine is also from Romania, it's not something I would have done but I fostered her as her first home didn't work out; she's a lovely dog so she stayed, as I like her so much I would definatley consider another one. She has a high percentage of Caucasian shepherd dog (used for guarding livestock) and Segugio Italiano (a hunting dog) plus several other guarding & hunting breeds so she has an intersting personality! And wouldn't be for everybody but she's such a great dog I'd look into getting another one like her

Some of the Romanian breeds are fabulous. We have a Carpathian shepherd and one we suspect is some combination of collie/bucovina/terrier and they are incredible, powerful loyal characters. I am smitten!
Incidentally the third is a lab X gsd and he's harder than the other two to manage: less intelligent and a much, much, much slower learner - whereas the other two don't need telling something twice!

But I absolutely understand the concerns of rescuing from abroad; we only did it because we had one dog left alone and grieving so hard after the loss of a friend that he barely ate for weeks, but none of the UK rescues would adopt out to us as my brother and I were 15 at the time and we had other animals and weren't an 'only dog' home!

Then we found these two women (one in Romania, one in England) who rescue. Just a few dogs at a time - kept in the home of the Romanian lady then brought over. They are good and it is all very above board and proper.

All our previous dogs came from the Dogs Trust. We wound up with an overseas boy from Romania a couple of years ago but that's not a route I'd go down again. Our Dogs Trust dogs were all good as gold but our current boy is a pure sod due to having pretty much no socialisation at an early age.

I got mine variously from Greyhound welfare, donation (!), the local pound, Trail hound welfare/retired hounds and my own purchase. Never paid more than £50 for a dog till the latest one.

My current and last were both found on pets4homes because I had specific requirements (safe with kids and chickens and wouldn't chew my furniture whilst at work) I assume having a young child and living a flat (despite having an extremely active lifestyle) that I wouldn't fit the criteria set out by rescues.. I seem to be offered dogs on a weekly basis through friends of friends just because they know I have a farm, I have taken some of them on as fosters until homes that suit their needs come up so you could try just putting it out there on social media that you are looking and someone may get in contact needing to rehome their dog

Gosh I love that kelpie!! I fear he may have been looking for a home for a while so I really hope he finds the person or people he needs. Gorgeous, probably clever as anything and hugely good fun. What a gorgeous dog though it is sad he is in need of new people.
I hope Red is doing ok and I’m sure he’d love a playmate ?

Red is doing very well thanks - still a way to go to check that all of the complex factors involved in his surgery are resolved but he chased a rat this morning (I know he is supposed to be resting) and savaged my neighbours kind donation of a copy of H&H!! He is driving himself mad with his cone but vet is delighted with his progress. :) I do NOT think we need a kelpie to help with recovery or anything else - we certainly don't have enough work for a kelpie to do here but blimey that dog is gorgeous and will make someone the most fantastic dog!!

My gosh, that Kelpie! Those eyes and ears! ?

Another who has ended up with a foreign rescue dog. I'm in Herts too and got mine from a rescue in Buntingford, it was ideal really because I was able to go and meet him and walk him a couple of times before committing and knew he was good in a home environment. There's no way I could do the whole picking them up from the transporter at a motorway services thing! It was really key to me that I was able to meet him first. He is my first dog and the best thing I've ever done, love him to bits! I like to think he is very happy with his new life (he is certainly very spoilt!).

The Animal Rescue Charity in Bishops Stortford, or National Animal Welfare Trust in Watford might be worth a look for you! Good luck if you decide to go for it!

Have had several over the years
1 was dumped in the countryside near our cottage
1word of mouth through my late husband’s shooting syndicate, owner had died
1local vet, stray taken to be PTS by pound, vet wouldn’t do it and took her for rehoming
(Labrador)
2 foster failures (I foster for a small local rescue)
latest one from a local FB pets rehoming page (a NZ hunt away x) should not look at those pages but glad I did , he’s come on a treat having never lived in a house before and had a shelterd life. He’s such a happy boy now

I have been looking to get a rescue dog for the last 18 months, everyone I applied for I was turned down. For two reasons, we don’t have a large garden and we have two cats.

I am 52 years old and retired, we walk our current dog 4x a day. We have a holiday home by the sea that we try and go to every week and the dogs would come to the stables with me 2-3 times per day. ?‍♀️?‍♀️

I gave up and found a lovely 3 year old Minnature Labradoodle for rehoming on Preloved. Lovely little dog who has been really well looked after and trained. Unfortunately the families circumstances had changed and they were struggling to look after her properly.

I did pay for her, £450 which to be honest was an absolute bargain and I would have had to pay similar as most rescue centres.

Some (well it seems most) of these rescues are so failing their charges.

A lovely lady I know was also rejected by several. Because she too doesn’t have a large garden (and no lawn), and goes out (shock horror) a couple of times a week (one morning as a volunteer for RDA).

She finally found the most wonderful whippet through one of our local small rescues who are more realistic about people’s lives.

The dog is so loved, has the most wonderful home, is walked several miles a day, at least once on the beach (which is 200 yards from her house), and wants for nothing.
