If you were a yard owner....

Am only on a small yard but we have no rules and everyone gets along well, everything is tidy, etc etc. We all borrow each other's stuff and put it back and if someone does have to rush off and perhaps hasn't put something away in its exact position, no problem, someone else will do it as we all have those running out of time moments.

That said, I have been on places where some rules were definitely needed. One of my pet ones would be do not run taps/empty water buckets in icy weather where people and horses have to walk.

I hasten to add that my current yard is wonderful . . . tidy, well-maintained, nice liveries, well-cared for horses, etc.

In no particular order...
1. All feeds/ hay nets must be made up by owners for yard staff to feed at set times
2. All horses get turned out/in by yard staff in morning (even diy) (only in stable if medical reasons apply ).
3. Must join worm / Farrier programme.
4. Must have insurance.
5.Must wear riding hat.
6. Must tidy away any equipment.
7.Must clean up any of their horses dropping in and around yard.
8. Must report any damage done to equipment/ stable/fencing/field/ yard.

Apart from all that have fun with your horse.

^^ Agree, why turned out/in by staff only?

I do agree with having insurance though, especially third party, just because if a horse damages a car badly for example, it is insured.

Heres mine! For DIY.

1. 05:30 - 22:30 on yard time (unless reasonable reason why).

2. Paddocks to be maintained regularly.

3. Visits by vets/ dentist/ farrier must be adhered too. Couldn't bear someone who was to lazy or tight in the pocket to pay for basic care of their animal.

4. Any form of animal cruelty/ neglect/ law breaking and your gone and banned for life.

5. Borrow equipment with owners permission and replace if damaged/lost.

6. All children fully supervised at all times... This for me would apply upto 17 years old. Any naughty kids would be banned too :p No shouting, running round or screaming.

7. Dogs allowed but mess cleaned and kept under control.

8. Clean up after yourself!

9. Beds to be kept at good standard.

10. Hi viz a must when hacking.

11. All horses insured.

12. Payment on set date. Exceptions obviously in certain circumstances.

13. Horses turned out in small groups, but none to be left on own at any time.

14. Strictly NO bitchiness/ liars/ thieves... They'd be off quicker then they arrived!

16. Riding hats to be worn at all times when on a horse. More for liability and reputation rather then personal preference.

15. Bring biscuits haha.

I'd be a good YO I think so long as people maintained a good standard, cared about their horses and other people :)

It's those that dont who would stress me out.

I'd also have some form of liability contract too drawn up.

17!? So I'm old enough to drive, have sex, do some forms of gambling etc. but I'm not old enough to be on your yard without my mum present!?
Wow I'm glad I've got my own stables :o

Hmmm
-No screaming children (or adults for that matter!)
-Dogs to be kept under control
-Taps to be switched off when not in use
-If you borrow it (with permission) and break, damage, lose etc then you replace it.
-Riding hats to be worn at all times when riding.
-Vet, farrier and dentist must be called out when needed
-No interfering with other peoples horses, if you have a concern, tell me. Don't go telling the rest of the yard it, disrupting the horses routine or upsetting the owner.
-Brush up outside your stable
-No bitching, bullying, lies, stealing etc.

That's it I think :D I'd be rather picky who came on, I've been lucky enough to go to a yard where we all really gelled well. Small yard and the regulars were between about 8 and 65, everyone got along fantastically!
Own place now with a spare stable, but I couldn't stand someone else and their horse here now I've had the taste of freedom

The horses would have a very set routine to keep them relaxed.
Forage would be ad-lib (or for those which HAVE to be restricted they would get little and often)
I would feed Forage at set four hour intervals (I actually do this now at the yard I joint manage and it really works as the horses know exactly where they are and don't get stressed out/impatient at feed times)
Turnout would be available year round and limited as little as possible during winter months
Any owners failing to meet their horse's basic needs will be charged and the duties will be carried out by the yard

I would hate to be on a yard run by most of you! :D
My current yard is one of the best I've been on almost entirely because it's so relaxed with very few rules. The other thing that makes it brilliant is no bitchyness.
I think my rules would be:
Clean up after yourself / your animals
Dogs and children under control or on a lead
Worming programme to be adhered to
Proper vet care etc must be provided
Hard hats must be worn when on a horse

Otherwise the only other thing would be that if you cause trouble / bitchyness then you're off the yard.

Seen too many diy's forget they have a horse standing in a stable all day.
would included this in livery cost.
I do think that horses should be out even just for 4 hours a day in field or in a section that is set up for exercise only ( starvation field ) so they dont get any fatter.
Thats just me.
OH, and no arguments between liveries ( not sure if I would get off with that one ) maybe planned meeting once a month to talk things through.

All included in price, to make sure horses are fed/ watered/ rugged and out for set time.
Some liveries will be around doing their own thing..no worries..
Bringing in again staff will be feeding at set times, dont want to leave any horse out.
Liveries will know that their horses taken care of twice a day only as much as I do like making up my horses bed I refuse to muck out Diy stable. I have seen diy put horse in stable 4.00pm and by the time I left stables next day 1pm still not turned up to water or fed, dont want this to happen to any horse at my yard (should mention my horse is out 24/7) and at my present yard other liveries help each other a lot.

Totally agree with this - thank goodness most of you don't run your own yards - they would be empty! :D

Should also mention anyone who wants to have their horses left in can write it in stable book,(as long as not standing all day) Will bring in for vet/ farrier, I am sure there are liveries who are rushed off their feet and trying to get to the yard b4 work. doctors/ dentist appointments.

As an ex yard owner, my future rule is 'no liveries' even if they beg, plead and generally bring on every sob story going. I had rules, they were ones I abided by, nothing bad, just clean up, tidy up, makes sure horses were well cared for. respect property etc. the rules were detailed in their opening pack, along with their contract. The rules were written on the board, in both stable blocks. And still there were some liveries who thought it did not apply to their precious darling.

Liveries are fundamentally selfish, their own horse is special, and requires special treatment. In my opinion all horses are special, and require special treatment. A yard is run for the collective, not the individual.

Rules need to be in place so everyone has standards to adhere to. And those rules need to be enforced. And the rules need to be published so everyone can see them.

I wonder if the problem with this would be that you'd have to employ staff and that may be difficult when some people would be doing their own thing. You'd need to generate a fair bit of income to employ someone regularly.

Really? This just boggles my mind. How do you "forget" that your horse is in? I can see how this might happen on an assisted livery yard when owner has forgotten to put their horse in the book or has put the request in the wrong place, but if you're DIY (rather than assisted) then surely you don't just "forget" your horse?

Baffled.

If I was a YO, oh no, wait... I am one :D
I don't do DIY liveries, and have a set of rules, some more important than others, but the 2 I make sure are adhered at all times are:
1. Pay on time
2. No unsolicited advice will be tolerated
:D

Can you give us an example or two? What sort of rules?

Liveries are fundamentally selfish, their own horse is special, and requires special treatment. In my opinion all horses are special, and require special treatment. A yard is run for the collective, not the individual.
Really? Liveries are fundamentally selfish? Not on my yard they're not. Some (I'd dare to say most) DIY liveries are capable of abiding by yard rules, treating other liveries (and their horses) with respect and taking the collective into account. Again, I'd love some examples here.

Rules need to be in place so everyone has standards to adhere to. And those rules need to be enforced. And the rules need to be published so everyone can see them.
You'll get no argument from me on this . . .

Wow, sweeping generalisation! I can't say that's my experience. I don't sense anyone on the yard I'm on expecting "special treatment" above and beyond the rest of us.

Nor do I find people selfish. In fact, most are very polite and helpful, happy to take turns using the manege, bring in/put out for each other and generally looking out for each other.

Completely disagree that liveries are selfish...what a sweeping generalisation!

I was, until recently, at a full livery yard where the YM changed to the YO. I was given a 9 page contract (copied from another yard) which was a list of rules, at no point did it say 'we as ...... Livery yard will carry out these services as Full Livery' in fact it didn't even mention duty of care.

Some of the rules were very sensible and I like a yard to have rules, however one rule was to wear a hard hat to turn out and bring (and ride) in your own horse. The week after I saw the YO riding her horse without a hat. Very much double standards. That coupled with some of the other 'rules' and the lack of any mention of their duty to provide the service I was paying for, I left. Myself and my horse are much happier.

Oh and now they have extra rules such as no outside instructors and no riding in circles in the school!

Suffice to say rules/guidelines need to work both ways.

Over 18's only.
Full livery only.
I need constant feeding with cheese and biscuits several times a day, so expect all liveries on arrival to bring me some. :D
No dogs, only 1 dog is allowed, and that's mine.
Any bitchiness, you will be shown the gate.

Needless to say, I don't run a posh livery yard, but have two liveries at my field, they get on with their stuff and we all get on fine.....

:D

I have a looong list, but pretty high on that would be "Do NOT leave rubbish lying around!"

Since YO has been away, I've found a huge amount of sweet wrappers left around the yard, which never happened when she was there. So, I bought a bin and wrote a strongly worded sign about leaving rubbish :P
