If you were to sum up your riding style....

Pretty but not effective

I lived in Sao Paulo for 3 years and trained under a fantastic showjumper there, when I left and came back to England, everyone commented on my position, it is distinctly Brazilian

I think too much and try too hard. I get bogged down with the detail and forget the overall picture! And because I am only riding one horse I don't feel as supple as I used too... totally rubbish!!

will be good when we get to 'free walk on a long rein', I'll be collapsing down his neck!

LOL - maybe you could get the multicoloured reins kiddies have instead :sirk:

EJ123 - you sound so much like me!
I've only go the two to ride now, and can sit to the one all day long, but my gelding I can sit to at all.. I know this is completely down to the fact I need about 3 months on the lunge before I even attempt anything else as I've lost my flow through my seat

I've taken up Pilates and am religiously doing stretches thoughout the day.... I cannot even touch my toes without bending my knees at the moment as my hamstrings are so tight

Well, my boy has been going really well lately. It's taken a while to get my confidence back after an evil horse, but now I'm getting there, I think. I'm fairly effective, but there's loads to work on with my position. I look down, slouch, toes out, hands too low, let reins slip through my fingers, don't use my body evenly (right rein is much better than left) and my legs/arms generally don't do exactly as I say!

I'm not that bad, but I want to be much better than I am. The thing is, I know what I'm suposed to be doing, but the signals just don't reach my limbs!

Work in progress!
I used to be far too quiet and ineffective but definately feel my reflexes are sharper and I am learning to think ahead an prepare for each movement. STill need to sit back more in canter and have tons to learn but I am definately getting there. You are all far too negative you can't be that bad!!

With my coloured I would say to hack out I am a quiet rider, for ay fast work I am a tad bit kick-pull. I don't have heavy hands but with a horse who pulls so very much they are nt entirely light either. With the other two boys and the mares I can sit quietly without oo much faff.

Bounty, I can't touch my toes either!!! (But weirdly I have never been able too)!

I know I need to go on the lunge/take my stirrups away but no way on the 4 year old... well maybe in the indoor school I would......

Pilates is supposed to be very good for us riders isn't it? Supposed to strengthen our core or something?

I've got a book called ' A gymnastic training system using mind, body, and spirit; progressive traing for horse and rider'
It's not something I would normally pick up, but it's not at all as wishy-washy as it sounds... it's about suppling and strengthening the horse using schooling exercises and the rider using pilates, and being in the right mindset to make progress.

Yeay Sunflower that bit about unconscious etc comes from this:

Yogi Breisner said at a demo recently there are four stages of riding:

1. Unconsciously Incompetent
2. Consciously Incompetent
3. Consciously Competent
4. Unconsciously Competent

Thats incompetent, NOT incontinent LOL

Read it and weep. Where am I? somewhere between 2 and 3

too conscious by far, a bit nervy, not confident in myself enough by far, and that sounds like most of you too!

Wishy washy but kind!

I always look a bit of a mess on a horse due to my spinal problems, but horses seem to like my quiet but unorthadox approach, especially young or excitable ones so I suppose it can't be too bad!

Obviously in need of lessons to sort out position, typical happy hacker position with legs slightly to forward, ready to sit out the bucking.

I would sum myself up as: bumpy and flappy

I always seem to be bouncing around on my pony, even managing to bounce right OFF my pony quite often, and I do kick and flap quite a bit. I can only concentrate on one thing at a time.

Completly out of practice given all I have done this summer is show in hand and not ride, although that all chages next week thank god.

Tactful and quiet riding style (too many OTTBs and babies) but like the OP if I think too much I loose all natural feel, as brain and body clearly cant function at the same time

PANTS! Everyone (ber my instructor) tells me to ride longer - I do and horse goes crap!! I ride with a good contact, horse is happy and works well but apparently doesn't 'look' nice. My legs dont seem connected to my head let alone my body and just kinda are stuck on his sides and for some reason I am LESS secure with a saddle and stirrups than without! I cant seem to sit on my a$$ either! Anyone got any super glue!
I may be female but I cannot multi task when it comes to riding - I can think effective and look pretty, or be effective and wish I looked pretty!

Saying that I managed to stay completely in the saddle during a mad obliterating scramble over a 1.10m jump that went horribly wrong and we had to dodge a pole that got stuck under his legs - so it cant be all bad! Who wants to be pretty all the time and not effective!! Bit like a supermodel trying to do manual labour - just doesn't work!
