Towing experts, help! I'm considering selling my car and 3.5T and replacing with an IW HB403 plus 4X4. I'll be towing my 14.3 cob, approx. 480kg. Can anyone recommend the most economical 4X4 (which is still safe!) for this setup as it will also be my only vehicle. I've been doing loads of research but have been blinded by science! Thanks in advance.
 
Have you got a B+E? I have a RAV4 with a 401 but I am currently down plating it as I was caught out on the uber complicated law!

I find the Rav pretty economical and nice to drive but it sounds like a tractor (compared to my last car!) despite a thorough service
 
I'm also in the market for a 403 ;) I have a tiguan and as far as I know this should be fine to tow a 403; it's quite economical without towing, I get about 40mpg with a bit more on a run. I'd like to hear what Rog has to say on the subject though!
 
Mine's been towed with a 2L Xantia, a 2L Volvo. I normally only have a 400kg pony in it but the times I've towed with a horse in it it has still towed well. I've been all over with the old Xantia and you could hardly tell it had a trailer on unless it was somewhere muddy.
 
Towcar of the year 2014 = Skoda Octavia 4x4 with a GVW of 1998

For B licence towing the HB403 would need to be down plated to 1500 from 1600 which at 780 empty would leave 720 for the horse

For B+E towing no need to down plate trailer

Octavia also makes for a good commuter car apparently
 
Many thanks everyone! I'll look into these. I'm an old bird - I've had my licence since 1987 - not sure what that means? I'll dig it out and have a look!

With your B+E gained free with pre 1997 car test pass you can have a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes and a trailer up to to 3.5 tonnes making a possible total MAM of 7 tonnes

The actual weight being towed would only be restricted by what the vehicle is capable of towing
