We were looking at getting a small horsebox but now cannot afford it due to uni fees etc :( SO, we are looking at getting a trailer.

We currently have an old RICE trailer. We are going to do it up i.e. re paint / new floor / new partition etc etc. and then either sell it and get an Ifor Williams, or keep it.

So what are people opinions on IW's and Rices? Which do they think are better? Which are more sturdy?

Oh, and I'd only be using it for local shows with my 14.3/15hh clydieX - She weighs between 500 and 550kg ;)

Even fully refurbed a Rice is unlikely to sell for enough to allow you to buy an Ifor - unless you buy one that again needs refurbing. Having owned both, I would say that a Rice gives a more comfortable ride and is much less likely to get nicked. So I would tidy it up and keep the Rice :)

I prefer the Rice trailers though ive never owned an Ifor W, ive towed one before and travelled horses in them. The Rice trailer always seems smoother and ive never had a horse that i couldnt load into it. They seem to be a lot more welcoming compared to the Ifor W.

I prefer ifor having used both for travelling, if you have 2 large horses the ifor is easier on exit I have found and I prefer the build quality. There would be no competition for me I would always go for IW.

If you have got one i would stick with it. You know what's been wrong with it and know it's in good nick. You could buy one and find all sorts of problems

Oops, didnt see that ;)

Erm, my dad would be the one driving - hes been driving for 30+ years - if that helps?
If you have B licence then .....

SUPERVISING A B+E LEARNER
In April 2010 new rules were introduced for those supervising certain learner drivers but they only affected those supervising VOCATIONAL categories such as C1 C1+E D1 & D1+E where the supervising driver had those categories given to them for free when they passed a pre 1997 car test.
They do not affect those with a pre 1997 B+E licence who wish to supervise a B+E learner.
All B licence holders have B+E provisional on the paper part of their licence and can tow an empty or loaded trailer on all roads including motorways.
The usual rules apply when a learner is driving -
The supervising driver must be aged over 21
The supervising driver must have held a B+E licence for at least 3 years
L plates must be fitted to the front of the vehicle and the rear of the trailer
Correct insurance for a B+E learner

Many will find that passing the once in a lifetime B+E test is their best option so here is some info on that test:-

The B+E test
No medical or theory test required
Read a number plate from a certain distance
VIDEO - Show Me Tell Me Questions - usually 5
The next three can be in any order:-
VIDEO - Reversing Exercise - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
VIDEO - Uncouple/couple up - done in test centre grounds if test conducted from practical test centre - some tests are now being done from training school grounds
One hour road drive - includes the independent drive and is done virtually the same as the basic car test

DISCLAIMER - I have no connection to any companies which may be featured in those videos

This is interesting – a B licence towing set up can be presented for the B+E test but L plates must be used for the test. So you can train yourself, go to test by yourself, fit L plates, do the test, then, pass or fail, remove L plates and drive away by yourself.

He used to drive big lorries and vans and trailers for a living?
He drives with trailers now probably 2/3 times a month?
