Who else is struggling with getting covered in loose hair from horses who are moulting? My mare is currently living out without a rug and although she is rolling and scratching to try and rid herself of her winter coat the amount that is coming out when I groom her (with a shedding tool) is the worst I remember. I get covered in hair - it gets up my nose and in my eyes. I look like a hedgehog every night when I groom her. In the past I’ve clipped her out in January, but as she is now totally retired I decided not to this year – how I am regretting it? Without wearing overalls how can I stop the hair sticking to my clothes?

I have an elderly grey mare that grew a coat, the length of which I’ve never seen before (I’m suspecting Cushings so will get her tested when she has her teeth done). She doesn’t really like being brushed and currently looks like a lion where the back end has moulted quicker than the front.

My poor farrier was wearing a fleece jacket last week. By the time he’d finished all mine, the arms were covered in multiple colours of hair, so much that the fleece couldn’t even be seen under it. God knows what he looked like by the end of the day (I did offer him a stiff brush, which he declined).

I feel your pain as the owner of a horse who has already shed more coat than he can possibly have started with ;)

In terms of hair in mouth and nose, I've started wearing a mask when filling haynets recently (it's not like we haven't all got plenty) and find that helps so how about a mask?

I just come home after the yard and use gaffer tape to life all the loose stuff off my clothes before I cook.

I fully clipped my horse a few weeks ago (legs and head left on for my own safety) and i can tell you its not much better. He is still moulting but the hairs are tiny clipped winter hairs, they are driving me nuts, I'm covered!

Looks like I’m just going to have to put up with eating/wearing/inhaling the hair for a few more weeks yet. Next year she is getting clipped in February ?
