i am really struggling with the bills at the moment, i keep my horse in a field which costs me £50 pcm. which isn't expensice. and in general he isn't an expensive horse to keep. i couldn't sell him because he really means to much to me. my mum is reluctant to give me anymore money towards him. i really do not know what to do, any advice would be good. thanks

Not sure what sort of horse you have but could you get a paying sharer? Even if only as a shofrt term measure until you get your finances sorted.

Good Luck.

Sharer? What else are you spending money on? It's quite hard to work out what you could cut back on without a bit more info, if you don't mind posting it?

J&C

i have thought about sharer but i really wouldn't feel comfortable with someone riding my horse without being there.

my monthly costs:

£50 rent
£50 hay
£26 feed every 6 weeks
and thats about it really

If your hay and grazing are of reasonable quality, could you cut out the hard feed? Also you didn't mention shoeing costs, but could you do without back shoes?
Hope you get yourself sorted.....

in the winter i go brefoot, and don't bother getting him trimmed as hacking keeps them down in summer i have fronts on, £30 every 6-8 weeksd. if i cut hard feed i would have to give more hay which will work out more.

What do you do for a living? Have you thought about getting a new job? If you can't do that how about getting an evening or weekend job somewhere? Easiest type of ones would be waitressing/bar work. Would give you some extra cash to pay just for horse stuff.

Do you have any other outgoings that maybe you could cut back on? Maybe get some financial advice?

sorry cen't do this, i should have mentioned iam only 14

as your only 14, go round the local yards and ask if they are looking for extra help. you wont get much but it will be something towards the keep. other wise youl have to look into getting a sharer. im the same and dont like the thought of someone else riding mine but you just have to bite the bullet.

i have thought about this but we don't really have any near us

can you get a paper round age 14?
Have you got anything you can sell that's YOURS not your parents, such as old computer games etc?
what about checking with your parents and then asking neighbours if you can wash cars, do a bit of gardening?

Well, as a 14 year old I assume your parents must be paying for your horses keep anyway and agreed to this so how come you are struggling? As someone said you can get jobs such as paper rounds, maybe working in a restaurant/cafe (not sure what age you have to be 14/15 I think - I know I worked waitressing when i was about your age). Other than this how about doing some other 'chores' for money - the old fashioned things like car washing, doing garden etc etc.

to be quite honest i would put him on loan or get a sharer even if you dont want to - it seems like it would be in the horses best interests? -
you havent mentioned insurance in your bills?
What would you do if he was ill?

When I was 14 I bought a horse..... my mum refused to pay anything. I had to bike for at least an hour every morning to a yard where I did all yard jobs then bike home again. Oh and bike to do my own horse!!

Thats how I paid for him.

my mum pays for insurance and some towards him, i get pocket money from my aunt and give my little cousin a lesson on him once a week which is £10 ago, she hasn't ridden over the winter cos of the weather!! i have tried for a paper round but all booked up. i have written some letters this eveing to a couple of people in the village where the horse is, about exercising, mucking out and any odd- jobs so will pop them through their doors tomo, so fingers crossed for that. thanks for your replies!!! :D

I got my first horse when I was 15 and had 3 jobs, Saturdays I worked in a shop, evenings and holidays did baby sitting and Sundays and holidays took rides out on a trecking yard. Why don't you put a notice up in the tack shop to see if there is any interst. And ask them and the ffarrier to keep an ear out for anyone who might be looking for help.

My son and three friends cornered all the odd jobs in the village when they were about 14. They produced a flyer, and did everything from car washing through baby sitting, dog walking, cat/dog feeding when owners out, tidying garden sheds, lawn mowing, leaf clearing to "anything considered". They made a steady income, and as there were four of them (2 girls, 2 boys) they were able to cover all things. They pooled all the money and then shared it out.

Could you do something like this. It's a bit more fun working with friends, and also you don't have to turn down jobs.

And, like everybody else, I think the sharer idea is best. I used to let a lady I knew and whose riding I respected ride my horse every Monday, a day when I wasn't able to ride anyway, and she paid a bit towards his shoeing. Every little helps.

I would happily pay someone to wash cars, feed cats while away, see to horse if I can't get there, cut the grass, paint the showjumps etc. I am sure you will find someone who needs some help!!!

If there are others with horses in the village you could try asking if you could do all the chores in return for free keep of your horse. If he's on his own at the moment it's not a very nice life for a horse so might be kinder for him. If he already has company thn fine.
