Hi guys,

I just wanted to post as I'm so excited as its finally sinking in that I now have my own horse!

I've been to see him twice before buying, once with a knowledgeable horsey friend, and then again with my Mum last week as she wanted to meet him and to pay the remainder of his cost.

He has had his 5 stage vetting last week and passed with flying colours so his arrival date at his new home with me is 3rd Sept!

Although I've loaned/shared horses before, this is my very own horse (at the grand age of 30!) and it feels amazingly different already.

I worry of course if I've made the right choice and that I'll do right by him but I guess thats normal.

Today I took the dogs down to the stables where he will be kept with 3 others and they loved running around while I had a clean up and got all his things ready. It all looks so new and shiny so I'm making the most of clean stuff while it lasts!

He is a 15hh bay Criollo horse. 5 or 6 years old (I need to check his passport), sweet natured and very comfortable

I do have a photo but not sure how to post. If I can email it to another member to post that would be lovely if someone doesnt mind doing that.

Also wanted to say thanks for helping me get this far with all your useful posts if I've asked a 'newbie' question

Oh congratulations! And masses of good luck to you and your new horse

Congrats. I bet you can't wait for him to arrive.
You can email me the pic if you want, my address is in my profile.

Yay! I got my first horse at 30 too and I still forget she is mine. You'll be fine, it's understandble that you'll be worried as this is the first time that you have had sole responsibility, even if you did share/loan before. Good luck with him, enjoy every minute and get loads of photos so we can have a nosey too. I love looking at people's pics, especially new horses

Thanks for your lovely and supportive comments. It means a lot.

He is called Diamante, but thats a bit 'blingy' even for me! I think I'll shorten it to Dante which is still pretty I think but hopefully not too much 'my little pony'!

He has a really kind eye and generally a lovely look about him. Well done you.

I hope you have many happy years with your new boy

My dream came true at the age of 37, having had him 3 mths it's the best thing I ever did. You must be sooooooo excited (and probably scared too, I know I was), I'm so pleased for you and what a lovely looking boy!

HUGE HUGE CONGRATS it is an amazing feeling and never leaves you please pm pics. i bought my very own first horse at 31 so there seems to be a few of us on this post that realised and achieved our dream and this age, i think its cos we know best haha!!!!

We were just talking about Criollo horses on here last night!
Where did you buy him from? I would LOVE a Criollo.
Does he ride English or western?

He looks lovely. Good luck and keep us posted on how it goes, I for one will be especially interested.

Congrats, he looks lovely!

Hoping to get my own first horse this winter at the age of 30 - I think having to wait so long makes it feel even better!

So happy for you!

After a rest from horses through my twenties I got my very first that I owned all by myself at 30 as well! lol

Must be a trend !

All of my horses from my youth were owned by my family but not just me so having your very own feels alot different in my opinion!

I wish you all the best and I think he is wonderful!

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for all your lovely comments. Gives me lots of confidence so really special - thank you!

For those of you asking, I got him from Criollo Farm In Wilts. They have lots of criollos ranging from the chubby pony types to the more throughbred-y polo pony types. They seem to know each horse very well.

Regarding western/english style. Well its much closer to Western, different but similar and fortunatley I have been riding western style for some time so used to the very loose rein contact and seat aids. Some of their horses are quite sharp and very responsive (which I guess can be an issue if you arent used to it), others are slightly more forgiving. They say that not all people get on with it at all so I guess you just have to try!

Also meant to add for those interested in the dealer that I think the horses come over in April each year so I was a bit late getting in there so maybe the best go first? On the other hand maybe they are more settled now? There were certainly many lovely horses still available. The place seems used to dealing with riders lacking in confidence wanting a happy hackers. From what I can gather they also pick out the finer types for polo and these are sold via their polo connections or for more confident riders.
