When Ellie was pts last February I adopted another bitch called Poppy. After a few weeing incidents during the first couple of weeks, she was absolutely fine for six months then for no reason that I know of, she has started weeing in the lounge. It used to only be once a week but now she is doing it at least once a day and I really am at my wits end! :(

She used to always do it in the same place despite using countless different urine eliminators so I put down a couple of incontinence pads. This was ok for a while but then she started going on her duvet which is quite difficult to wash as it only just fits in the machine.

She has had tests done at the vets and there is nothing physically wrong with her and she can go all day without weeing if I'm at home. It also doesn't seem a separation anxiety thing as she is always lying on the sofa when I leave and when I get home.

Any ideas on how to stop her doing it when I'm not there? And what can I use to get rid of the smell as I haven't found one product that works yet?

There is no way she is going back to kennels as I've had her a year and apart from this she is a lovely dog. I just don't want to spend the rest of my time with her continually clearing up urine!

Smell remover - vinegar, it seems to absorb the smell but doesnt smell too much itself if that makes sense - mind i have solid floors, maybe not so good on carpet:) My setter can be a pest at weeing, but she can be a bit incontinant (ssp) and do it in her sleep. Other than letting her outside and making a really big fuss of her when she wees outside, im not sure.

Pets at home do one that is good

Have you thought about crate training her? Have you videoed her while you are out to see if she does get upset at some point? H is going through a phase, but we've found he is fine for a good 5 mins when we leave, then cries/barks for 30 mins and then sleeps the rest of the time. If we hadn't videoed him we'd have never known.

Can you not put her in your kitchen or utility room when you go out or if she is crate trained in her crate. If you have open plan then use stair gates until she is fully trustworthy.

As she only does it when you are out it could well be SA, I would also leave her with a tasty bone or a kong which has been frozen.

She's left for four hours in the morning then I'm home for an hour and then three hours in the afternoon. I know it sounds a long time but I forgot to mention that she's a greyhound and they are the laziest breed of dog I have come across.

I can't keep her in the kitchen as it's very small and I couldn't fit both dogs in there, also it doesn't seem fair on Hector to be cooped up when it's not his fault. If I put her in a crate she just barks her head off.

I haven't tried recording her although i would like to but what sort of set up would I have to have? It would be very interesting to see what triggers this weeing because another thing I forgot to mention is that she never does it at the weekends if I need to go out. I live near a boys secondary school and I'm wondering whether it upsets her when they finish school. Another good reason for recording her.

Smiffyimp - do you just put the vinegar on neat? Also, what can I wash her beds in because obviously the smell is still there after a normal non-bio wash?

Hounds do have a tendency to pee when they get cold. Perhaps something is waking her up and then she feels the need for a pee? If she's being disturbed by noise, then maybe leave a radio on for her and make sure she empties her bladder before you leave. (Another thing about hounds are they can be lazy when it comes to peeing, so even if you let them out you may have to watch her to make sure she goes!):)
