I have to use spurs with my loan horse, he is petrified of whips, generally forward going as anglo arab but when he spooks without spurs i would have no hope of getting him moving forward let alone past the scary plastic bag/hole in road!! few people on my yard use spurs for lazy horses too as its nicer than constantly having to tap with whip. x
If you use the impulse spurs they probably will help but then you will find it difficult to not use them in the future as you will start to rely on them - also your horse should go from your seat and leg not from your heel.
Spurs are supposed to refine your aids esp for more advanced movements not to make the horse go.
I would probably look for instruction to get your horse responding quicker to your aids if at all possible.
Perhaps do schooling exercises with your horse before you try spurs, I had to use them on a horse that napped but thats the only time I wear them.
A good exercise is to do walk-trot-walk-trot-walk-trot for a bout five minutes and only do 3-5 steps in each pace. This gets the horse lietening to your leg and moving away.
If my boy ever gets a bit lazy and I have to use my leg more then twice before he responds I will give him a pony club kick! It sounds bad but its effective and then I praise him for moving away, I don't have to do this often.
Another way would be to try and do lots of transitions within the pace such as go from a collected trot to a more lengthened trot. A good way of cantering this is to open up the canter on the long side of the school and shorten on the short side.
Hope this helps as you want spurs as a last resort.
