Can't quite put my finger on it but my 20yr old mare is not quite right. For the last couple of day's she has given the impression that she is "away with the fairies!" She spends alot of time staring into space until something catches her attention. Her vital signs are all normal, she is still eating (all be it very slowly in between listening/looking at heaven only knows what). She has a large haynet of a night which she usually eats with gusto, not at the moment she is leaving almost half of it (it is her usual hay). She is turned out by day and in at night and has been since the end of September without any problems until now.
The other day whilst waiting to be turned out she was dozing very heavily head almost on to her knees and almost stumbled ( a bit like when you fall asleep too quickly and wake with a jolt as if you are falling). I mentioned this to my vet who didn't seemed unduly concerned and said that horse's can sometimes do this (?).
I am wondering if any of you out there have any suggestions as to what could be causing this or am I just worrying over nothing. Should I give her another couple of days and then call the vet out?
