Can't quite put my finger on it but my 20yr old mare is not quite right. For the last couple of day's she has given the impression that she is "away with the fairies!" She spends alot of time staring into space until something catches her attention. Her vital signs are all normal, she is still eating (all be it very slowly in between listening/looking at heaven only knows what). She has a large haynet of a night which she usually eats with gusto, not at the moment she is leaving almost half of it (it is her usual hay). She is turned out by day and in at night and has been since the end of September without any problems until now.
The other day whilst waiting to be turned out she was dozing very heavily head almost on to her knees and almost stumbled ( a bit like when you fall asleep too quickly and wake with a jolt as if you are falling). I mentioned this to my vet who didn't seemed unduly concerned and said that horse's can sometimes do this (?).
I am wondering if any of you out there have any suggestions as to what could be causing this or am I just worrying over nothing. Should I give her another couple of days and then call the vet out?

I think its just a sign of old age bless her plus this time of year doesn't help with the change of seasons. I feel tired myself! lol Seriously though if you are worried I would get her checked she might have a deficiency which is making her sleepy? The vet will probably just want to check her bloods make sure everything is ok. Good luck with her :)

I would give her a few days and see what happens , especially if the vet isn't worried. mine went funny a couple of times too, just really listless and not her usual self and then the next day was fine. I thought the vet would think i was mad if i called and said 'she's just gone a bit funny'.
sounds a bit odd though. could it be narcolepsy or something like that. If she starts losing condition then maybe the vet would want a look at her.
