re interesting article in todays H&H. Vets say riders weight should be no more than 15% of the horses weight. How many riders are in denial about their weight and the fact they are too heavy for their horse?

Oh, I'm in denial alright, in denial about everything, how much I weight, how much the horses weigh, how much they cost, how much my gear costs, how old I am, does my arse look good in this... all sorts :)
You could say I'm deranged or just a happy person, I maintain I can't do percentages anyway and that's the version I'm sticking to.

:D

I cant see how people can think its ok ride a horse when they are too heavy for it. They may not be fat they might just be too big and heavy for that horse and therefore shouldn't be riding it. for example I know of a 15 stone man who rides an arab in endurance rides. he thinks its ok but Me and others don't. He's just too heavy and will do the horse damage to its joints and back over the long term.

Why are you so obsessed with this. People do lots of things you may not approve of. Just concentrate on your own horse. If the Arab wasn't coping it wouldn't pass the vet at the end of the ride.

Oh let's just cut to the chase... fat people are evil and everything that's wrong with the world and are solely to blame for anything you can think of and may indeed be infectious!!

*disclaimer... I am joking.*

On behalf of the fat I'd like to say that there's no need for national panic. We have noticed and you really don't need to worry :P

This topic has been done ad neauseum. Can someone please start a Parelli thread for distraction :D

Its long term cumulative damage that is done by being too heavy for a horse. Why so obsessed? Not obsessed but concerned for the horses welfare.

I think as long as you are fit and healthy then your weight shouldn't matter. Surely everyone should aim to be as fit and healthy as possible, it's better for you, better for your riding, better for your horse. Doesn't mean you'll only weigh 8 stone though

Have you graduated from the famous Littlelegs' School of Levitational Horsemanship? :D

There is different levels of most everything, if we're talking about a rider that I think looks like they're a bit overweight, but the horse is otherwise taken good care of, then even though I don't think that it is ideal, in general, I'm not concerned about such a horse welfare.

Besides, just like a well-trained, well muscled human is capable to carry, lift and pull heavier weights, I believe that a well-trained, well muscled horse is able to carry and pull heavier weights. So I don't think it is as easy, as just saying maximum should be this or that percentage.

Sounds like a quite interesting school! :D

I am ashamed to say I have just worked out my percentage using my lightest horse phew pass the cake .
Can't do do the 10% though.

A balanced rider is a lot less strain on a horse.
A fit horse can will weigh less than a fat horse, does that mean it can carry less?
A horse working fast and jumping will be under more strain than a gentle hack
An arab has one less vertebrea, so is capable of carrying more due to the shorter back
A saddle with a larger bearing surface will spread the weight better.
If the horse is happy, even if it "looks" wrong, maybe it is a working relationship that they both enjoy. Let them, concentrate on your own faults, and enjoy your own horse.

And as for tall people who ride anything under 16.2 hh - don't get me started ;). As I am a string bean and ride 14 handers - and an adult, there is simply no hope for me. Just off to search for a carrot stick to beat myself up with. :D

Again???????
