Phone around several vets to get the best price for your scan when you can afford it, the price difference is tremendous I had prices vary from £95.00 to £250
Actually thinking about it I probably wouldn't bother having her scanned at this stage. You won't see anything and it's expense you can do without OP. I'd just have her palpated.
It sure does Abbi, and thank you!Really?
It is hardly the OP's fault if circumstances changed suddenly is it?
s**t happens.
If you have missed the critical early scan which will show up twins (which, btw is not totally accurate as I have a mare scanned at that stage showing not in foal.............. and her lovely now 5 month old foal...) What is the point of scanning? She is either in foal or she isn't. Time will tell.
And to those who see fit to criticise, as was mentioned above, s***t happens and we cannot organise our lives imagining every possible outcome otherwise we would never do anything.
Having been through the heartbreak of twinning ( despite 3 scans, they can be missed on occasion ) i would not wish it upon any horse, ever.
You owe it to your mare to have had her scanned. I hope to god you dont lose her if she has twinned. 5 months you say? thats a mighty big belly for 5 months. I would be suspicious.
Sorry, i find the whole thing irresponsible. Scanning isnt colic surgury and that kind of money can and should be found, for the MARES sake.
Also i agree, no point scanning now, you wont see anything.
Lionman I'm with you on this, can't afford a scan!!!! Why bloody breed. This winds me right up
She looks in foal, she looks lovely. Can I ask if you can't afford to have her scanned why did you put her in foal?

Just out of interest what's the likelihood of twinning? Is there any figures out there? I thought it was mainly Arabs and highly bred horses that twinned.
As you can tell I don't have any experience of breeding. I did know someone who's horse had twins that birthed fine but one of the twins had to be pts after the mother stood on it.
I have read the whole thread and I'm sorry that your circumstances have changed but if you haven't enough even for a scan things must off been pretty tight before. I ended up with £1500 bill after my mare lost her foal at 9 months and that was to save my mare. If you had no savings or little money before than you shouldn't really have put your mare in foal
don't you think these lectures are a little pointless now - stable? Horse? bolted?
Not a lot she can do about the situation now is it. Sometimes s**t happens!!! How do you know she hasn't had to put a relative in a home or been diagnosed with some kind of illness that prevented her working and has eaten into those savings? Do you know this? No, you don't know. It's happened, she's come on here for advice and all she's got is lectures and horrible comments. Surely if she was THAT irresponsible she wouldn't have bothered asking on here in the first place.

This is quite true in the OP's case. On the other hand, lots of other people read these threads so there is some point in getting the message across: If you're really determined to breed a foal, (bearing in mind the number of unwanted horses these days) please be financially prepared. Have some cash put away to cover essentials before you send your mare to stud. Circumstances can change, you could lose your job, etc.
Agreed to a point (i think the level of harshness in some responses is totally uncalled for though) however, if someone has a tendency for irresponsibility regarding horses i very much doubt a group of faceless people they're never likely to meet from cyber space are going to have an impact on the decisions they make.

But if the problem isn't wilful irresponsibility but ignorance it can be very useful! There are a lot of people on here who do not have extensive experience with horses, or perhaps not with one aspect of horsecare such as breeding, and this forum is a valuable learning tool. I know I learn lots from it. Threads like this usually include some good information, e.g. when and why we scan mares, or how long after gelding to turn out with mares...
If you post on a public forum you don't have any right to dictate what answers and opinions you receive, I personally don't think anyone has been particularly rude on here and most people have all wished the horse well. That doesn't mean they agree with what you are doing and they have every right to express that opinion.

Sorry it'smygirl - i understand it must've been very difficult for you when you nearly lost your mare and it's why you feel so strongly about it but there're so many people that are so quick to judge others on here without knowing the back ground and it's bloomin ridiculous!
