In hand showing help

Google google google. Watch youtube videos. Read tips.
Go and watch a show or a class before you go in the ring.

It's very simple and as long as you manage to not be at the front - copy the person ahead of you :D

Always remember to have some rustly paper in your pocket to make him look interested and alert when you are standing him up for the judge. and perhaps a polo to reward him when you return to the line up.

Always push him away from you when you turn at the top of the walk up - just before you trot out - so the pony is always fully in the judges view.

Only ever answer any questions the judges may ask, never offer information.

Never get to close to the pony in front of you when walking the ring, or when you are in the line up, the judge needs to be able to see your pony fully and it won't help if it is cramped up with the others.

I could go on forever, but I hope this helps and good luck!!

Need to know what you are showing inhand and the age to give you more info on what they and you should wear.

As for the class. Everyone enters the Ring on the right lead. All walk round till steward asks all to line up then each horse trots round to the end of the line individually. Once all have trooted the group walk round again whilest the Judge picks the initial lineup.

You then present horse to Judge, make sure Horse knows how to stand up correctly. Walk away turn and trot back straight at Judge then continue on right rein along long side. Halt and thank Judge with polite salute. Some acknowledge this some dont. Return to lineup. Wait till last horse has completed trot then stand Horse up as Judge may do a last inspection before asking the lineup to walk around again whilest the winner is decided. Once called in smile give horse big hug recieve Rosette burst in to tears then do lap of honour.

I will be showing at some local level and a couple of agri shows. Just what to wear etc. I have googled but getting a bit confused lol.
He is a 2 year jet black wb x tb I think he is slightly chunkier than my other wb x tb who was shown as a riding horse.
Thanks

Tweed jacket, light coloured trousers, shirt and tie, hat, gloves, carry a cane. This should suit hunter or riding horse classes, some of the sport horse classes require you to wear white so just check what you need if you are going to do those classes.

Are his legs black? Is yes then light colour trousers.
I wear jodphur boots or my mountain horse ankle boots.
Hairnet and hard hat. Shirt and tie and yeah ideally a tweed.

If his only 2yo I would look at more Youngstock classes as the competition will be better for him.

WBxTB i would use a rolled leather bridle and happy mouth bit. Plait him up.

Work on getting a good forward trot. And smile and look like its really really fun and the best day your having.

Was thinking about showing our new dartmoor hill pony, she is 5 and 11hh. I have nothing to wear at the moment but can borrow the kids jod boots . I ony want to do few locaal show while I break her to drive

Thanks
He has no white at all on him. What sort of lead should I use. He trots up beautifully though have not put a bridle on him yet

You need a plain havana in hand bridle, flat not rolled, with a simple bit, you need to try him and see what suits, then either a leather 2 way or 3 way coupling, the 3 way will mean you are on the noseband rather than just the bit, finished off with a leather lead rein. Have a look for good quality 2nd hand ones to save you the expense of buying new.

Dont want to hijack thread, but im hoping to show my sec d this spring. He will be 12 months by then. Any tips on showing him please. hes got 4 white socks. Should I get a white showing halter? What should I wear. I only want to do a show or two for the experience for him but dont want to make a fool o fmyself!

Why flat? I showed my WB last year and was advised - http://www.trot2.com/ascot-in-hand-bridle.ir?cName=for-the-horse-saddlery-bridles but I guess that's not really rolled but more padded.

I believe that if the horse has light legs then your trousers should be the opposite and dark. Then vice versa.

Thanks, any other tips?

I don't know much about Sec A showing but from what I've seen I think; if your under 16yo then you need to wear your hat, then trousers, shirt, tie and you can wear a waistcoat. You see many handlers also wearing trainers. Show cain and gloves.

Pony is fine in the white halter if you can control him. If his entire then you may need to look into if he needs biting - I have no idea.

Again at 12 months I would be recommending Youngstock classes, against the M&M he may not do as well as he will not have the condition and muscle of the older boys. This is just from my own experience - every judge is different.

Tip - run as fast as you can. :)

Enjoy.

Thanks, hes a sec D and im well over 16 but thanks for the tips

Would he not be better in black instead of Havana. Now I'm confused again. Fat raised or rolled

Havana is traditional and will actually enhance his colour, a flat bridle will be suitable for all classes, you can put a velvet browband on if doing a riding horse class or leave it plain for hunters. A raised browband and noseband would be ok but not a rolled one it is not correct for the classes your horse will be doing, Arabs are often shown in rolled bridles but it would look too fine on a bigger horse.
The tack used should be subtle so the judge looks at your horse not what is on it's head, the exception being when using a velvet browband to catch the eye.

All entries will walk round ring together first so judge can have a look and compare all horses.

Keep your eye on the judge and steward who will stop the class in a corner and then ask ask each one of you to trot your horse round individually to back of class. Then you are likely to be pulled in based on initial thoughts. You will then each be called out to judge so, stand your horse up square and position yourself at your horse's head. When judge has had a good look you'll be asked to walk horse away in a straight line and trot back towards the judge.

Remember to walk away, turn your horse in a small circle away from you then walk two or three strides to get your horse balanced again, then trot (active trot) straight towards and passed the judge (they'll step a side). Judge needs to see horse move from front and behind. Then go back to your place in line up.

You'll then all be asked to walk round and called back in, in final placings

Sorry OP I didn't mean rolled. I was thinking padded type - as per my link.

And as his black then havana bridle and tack.

But at local level I really would not worry. I've been beaten by a pony in a headcollar before and a grey covered in stains :)
I showed my yearling (below) he wore black and I'll reuse his bridle on this years babies.
