Hi there,
I have a local show coming up near me at the beginning of August, I was just wondering if anyone could give me some advise re turnout etc.
I have done in-had shows before with a shetland and New forest, however i have never shown my boy before!
So there are 5 classes which we could enter, they are, Ring Experience, Welsh, Best gelding (judged on confo and action), solid coloured and handsome gelding.
I will attach a picture, do you think these would be ok? I have to hack to get there, about an hour, he regularly hacks up to 2 hours, so think that shouldn't be a problem. He will obviously get brakes between classes plus OH will bring the car to put saddle brushes etc in.
So i had been wearing beige Jods, with black boots + gaiters, a white shirt with burgundy tie, and navy blue jacket, black gloves and blue velvet covered hat. does this sound reasonable? what do you do if it's raining?
Swift has a plain black bridle without noseband (he has a pretty face) just a snaffle bit on the browband, he has a natural main, tail and feathers, which i assume should be left as is?
Other than that if anyone has any tips or hints, how soon before to bath? etc would be greatly appreciated since it's our first.
And of course i'll post pics after if everything goes according to plan:D
Hope the pics don't come out too big, apologise in advance if they do:o

Your turnout sounds OK. If it rains, you get wet! Take a coat to keep dry out of the ring, but in the ring you wear your smart turnout. For your horse, you should put a cavesson noseband onto your bridle. You should use a neat dark-coloured numnah rather than an enormous bright dressage square. He is a native so unplaited is correct. Don't forget hoof oil. You may find that in August you don't need to bathe all of him, especially if you give him a really good grooming with a body brush every day for a week. Just wash his tail and socks on the day before the show (and again on the morning when they turn green!).

Five classes would be a lot in a day for a first show on top of hacking there and back. Why not aim for two classes with a reasonable gap in between to absorb the lessons from the first class so that you can do even better in the second class. Don't forget to take a bucket to give him a drink before the hack home.

Have a great time.

It is more correct to wear trousers (of contrasting colour to your horse's legs) than jodhpurs for in hand showing. Also a tweed jacket is more correct for showing M+Ms, with a shirt that is not white, and brown gloves. As has already been said, put a noseband on your bridle. I also think 5 classes is a lot for a first show, in hand showing isn't physically demanding but there is a lot for them to take in mentally, the whole atmopshere etc, if they are not used to it. I never do more than a couple of classes for the first few times I show a pony.

Hi thanks for the replys, i will certainly drop the solid coloured class which leaves ring experience followed by welsh, then there is a gap of 6 classes before best gelding and handsome gelding. do you think thats a long enough gap, and which of those classes do you think would be best for him?
Ok so tweed jacket, coloured shirt, brown cloves and dark trousers, what shoes would you wear with that?
I will put some effort into finding a cavesson noseband that will suit, any recommendations?
Defiantly won't forget the water, brushes for getting rid of saddle marks and refreshments for humans too!

Ideally you want to find a nice flat hunter-style cavesson. If you want a really nice high quality one, flyde saddlery will have something perfect. They're not cheap though, so if we're looking for a budget option, kincade do nice hunter nosebands.

oh and what width would suit him he's 13.2hh welsh c takes a pony size headpiece with cob cheekpieces, just to give you a clue about head size;)

As he's got a big white blaze you'll want something fairly wide to break that up - I'd guess maybe a 3/4 inch or a 7/8ths inch. Difficult to tell without having a base to work from. Perhaps someone on your yard would be able to lend you a noseband to put on. You can then decide if you want thicker or thinner, measure the width of that and go from there :)
