Hi- I have a 3 1/2 yr old tb filly (ex-racer) who i'm hoping to take in-hand showing at the weekend to do a youngstock class. This is really for experience as i just want to get her out & about, so dont want to spend loads on showing gear at the moment!

I have a good quality plain brown bridle (not an in-hand bridle), which i was going to use with a nice velvet browband. My fiend has lent me an in-hand lead rein with chain, but i would prefer to use plain reins over the head, as i feel more comfortable leading her like this (the chain on the lead-rein is very thin and a bit awkward to hold :-/)

Would bridle and reins be ok? Its only a local show, but dont want to look like a complete wally on our first time out :-)

Thanks!

In a youngstock class it would be more "correct" for plain tack and a lead chain.

Reins are more accepted when you are leading in double reins

It would be more correct with a chain but at local shows they won't mind!! I'm sure they will be very accomodatinh, I see plenty of people with incorrect tack at local shows and apart from hunter classes ive never seen a great deal made of it! It's better to be comfortable and confident with her being so young, especially as it's only for experience!

Thanks for the replies :-) I'm going to practice a bit this week with the chain and reins and see what works best... if it goes well on the day i'll buy my own lead which is more leather than chain, so its nicer to hold!

Been googling today, and it seems youngstock should be turned out by type, i.e what they would be shown as when ridden. My girl is definitely Riding Horse type rather than hunter, in which case its velvet browband. So i'll go with that, will make for some nice piccies if nothing else!

Good luck and definitely go with the reins if it gives you more confidence. As your horse is an ex racehorse, it is not like a youngster that has not been ridden so is used to a bridle and reins. Go with what you will be happy with. Have a good time.
