FINDING ROWAN RIVER

We are trying to find the whereabouts of an ex-racehorse.

Rowan River is a 7-year-old 15.3hh bay mare thoroughbred.

She is NOT missing nor has she been stolen. We are just trying to follow her post-racing history. My Father was a member of the syndicate that owned her when she was a youngster and we would like to be able to offer her a possible retirement home when that time comes.

Rowan River was sold at Melton Mowbray sales on Saturday June 14th. The dealer had only owned her for a few days and sold her on as she had a potential problem with one of her legs. We have spoken to the dealer but he kept no record of the sale. He sold her outside of the ring so there is no record there either. As a result we do not know where she is now!

We have managed to trace her history from leaving the first syndicate to a race yard in Wales and then on to an event yard in Sussex. There were several dealers in between each sale and we have managed to talk to everyone who owned, trained or treated her in that time. They have all been very helpful so the fact that we do not know where she is now is particularly frustrating.

Because of the potential problem with one of her legs it is likely that she will never race again and the offer of a retirement home may have to be made sooner rather than later. We are well aware of what happens to many racehorses when they no longer win races so are hoping to find her before it is too late. Even if we are too late we would rather know. It would be very sad but it would be better to know than to wonder for ever where she might be!

If you or someone you know went to Melton Mowbray sales on Saturday 11th June please try to remember if you might have seen a horse that matches Rowan River's description please get in touch with Phil on 07719 772 157

I know that bay thoroughbreds are two-a-penny and Rowan River doesn't have any distinguishing marks except for evidence of an injury on one of her front legs. She is also slightly smaller than most racehorses. Her name is also quite confusing, Rowan is the name of her stud and many people presume she is a male.

If you or someone you know sees or hears of a horse matching Rowan River's description please get in touch with Phil(Tel: 07719 772 157)

Thank you for reading and thank you too to all who have helped so far. If you think you may have any information that might help please get in touch with Phil on 07719 772 157 or at findingrowanriver@gmail.com

Thanks very much,

Phil

Thank you everyone for your help and support so far - I really hope we manage to find her whereabouts soon!
It has been suggested that I do not sound quite 'horsey' enough to be thinking of taking on an ex-racehorse! - I'd be the first to admit that! - Don't worry though - My 'OH' (I notice that most posters seem to prefer that acronym to 'husband' or 'girlfriend' !! - Is a male allowed to use that expression to refer to his girlfriend?) has an ex-racehorse already so we do have an idea of what we would be letting ourselves in for.

I'm afraid that I can not be of any use but just wanted to write and wish you all the luck in the world!

I hope you find, please do keep us posted.

went to see her to possibly buy at alison thorpes last year but the leg put us off. if i hear anything of her ill pass it on...
it might be worth phoning potters to put an alert on her name in case she ever does come up....

Thank you very much for your reply cuppatea - I have sent a message to you private message box - In the meantime I will contact Potters -I hope we can get to her before she gets to them though! - Thanks again - Phil

As far as I know there is only one other large horse abattoir in this country. So, probably worth the extra hassle of contacting them too. Someone on here will have the name. 'Cheshire Equine Services' is what comes up in google but I think it is known as something else.

Good luck.

I do hope you find her soon. I live quite close to the melton sales and will spread the word to see if anyone local bought her. Also an old man I know goes everytime and generally knows everyone, so I will try and get hold of him and see if he remembers anything.

I know it#s a very long shot but try and get in contact with ROR to see if anyone has registered her with them.

I wish you the very best of luck.

It may seem an obvious one but have you tried getting in touch with weatherbys? As nearly all race horses are weatherbys registered the new owners will possibly contact weatherbys to change the ownership.

Really hope you manage to track her down!

Thank you everyone for all your great advice and your very encouraging supportive words too - An especially big THANK YOU to 'Little Squirrel' for suggesting ROR - <www.ror.org.uk> - They are a fantastic organisation and have done so much to help find Rowan River - With their help I am feel that we might actually have a chance of finding her now - Thanks again
p.s. Weatherbys are also looking out for her - Thanks 'giveachance'

Thanks everyone for your very kind wishes - There have been many very useful suggestions - Some on here and many in my 'PM' box - I am afraid that I don't have time to reply to each message individually - I do appreciate all of your help though - And I am sure that Rowan River would be very humbled if she knew just how many people were thinking of her! - Thank you very much

oooooh!! please do tell

sorry didn't have time to pm and post last nite....basically I tracked her through Ascot Sales a few times the most recent being June 1st year!! so have now pm'd the searchers the name of purchaser...I am fairly certain she did not go for meat as they only bought two horses at the sale which is good news!

Thanks very much amage - Unfortunately she has been sold again since the Ascot sales - At Melton Mowbray June 14th - The dealer held on to her for three days - Unfortunately we don't know anything at all about who bought her this time - Except that they paid £200 - It's not looking good and it seems more and more likely that we may never see her again - Very sad
