Work keeps banging on that i ought to give up horses, but I have been round horses since i was 4 - and i am well old now - looking at this list i can see why:-

1998 - broken ankle- left - horse fell on me after a jump
2005 - broken pelvis, broken leg right, crushed knee -right - horse rolled on me x3 trying to get up after a fall - this was the worst one it took a year to learn to walk again and then a further 8 months to be "almost normal"
2009 - broken toe
2010 - badly twisted ankle left whilst turning out i went down a pot hole that had appeared under the water
2010 - kicked in mouth had 3 front teeth almost knocked out - 3 root fillings and teeth had to be bleached
2012 - broken leg - right

Argh Jeez! Nowhere near as bad as you - broken wrist, permanent back problem that gives pain every day after I was thrown onto a fence (if I could change one thing it would be that I hadn't ridden that day, broken foot.

Had own horses for 5/6 years now
2007 crushed hand, (galloped over and hoof stood on my hand, not great for a dentist!)
2009 broken leg (managed to work with this for the first week until cast)
Both stubble field falls.

At some point torn hip cartilage, only just diagnosed.
Oh and I got a concussion xc.
Not too bad.

Gingerwitch, you've had some bad ones! Hope you heal quickly. My work is also known for telling me to give up, even though I've not been off a lot.
Over 30odd years I have the following "memorable" injuries along with the usual bangs and scrapes;

Fractured skull
Concussion on 5 occasions
Broken arm
Broken ribs (2 occasions)
Broken toe
Broken collarbone and associated shoulder joint damage which required surgery after 2 years
Broken coccyx in 3 places - still hurt a year later!
Internal bleeding in pelvis from being thrown into fence
I also currently have a subluxating right shoulder thanks to an in-and-out dislocation 2 weeks ago when my youngster snatched a hind leg. To be fair, I do have appallingly shallow shoulders so it's not all her fault but I suspect I'll end up having to have the same surgery on this one that I had on the left :(

When you type it all out, it does beg the question as to why we bother?!!

Grown up with horses now 21 in 2 weeks and been very lucky! The only bad injury I got was ligament damage at age 6 when I was helping my dad feeding in the morning on our yard and one of the big horses barged out and ran me over. Oh and one knocked me over in the field and stood on my chest at age 5 - mum thought I was dead but just had a cracking hoof print bruise :) just general tumbles and bruises etc the bones have survived so far but many more years to go!

Couple of broken noses
Couple of broken toes
Shattered my left hand
Lower leg got crushed , compartment syndrome set in resulting in muscle dying and had to get it cut away as it turned black, thought I was going to lose my leg. They grafted over the removed area and I now sport what looks like a shark bite out of my leg.

- i forgot to say i fractuted my neck in 1986 in 8 places but that was caused by a car accident, a fall down the stairs and a colleague at work shaking me as a joke - police did offer to prosecute him - but i had stapled his tie to his blotter pad so i suppose i deserved it. I did go to the docs but he said i had a stiff neck and then i bent down to get a mars bar from the sweet machine and my neck went "snap" so i suppose that was a long process too - i was in hospital for weeks - but walked like a model when i got the neck brace off

Cheery plattie - i got my teeth broke a bit in this latest incident - it was a finish off from when the big lad hit me in the head when he was dieing - now when ever i have an injection on my right rear i get a pain like no other - it feels like a knife is puncturing my ear drum. I was dragged to dentist on Friday - but apart from packing i refused treatment - i got away with it cause hubby had had to go back to work and they felt sorry for me because of my break.

I am terrified of the dentist - i have asked for them to send me to the dental hospital to be put out but they have refused - but i know if they try and inject me i will have a heart attack one day - the last time they hit this spot i grabbed at the dentist and he called me a bloody stupid woman and told me he could have killed me - this has not helped - its made me worse

any suggestions??

Gingerwitch look up your local Fear Of Dentists group. Not only can they help you with coping strategies they can also put you in touch with a specialist dentist used to treating phobic patients. It is very common and there are understanding dentists out there. One of my relatives used to go to a dentist who used hypnosis to help phobic patients he also understood that sometimes a full on knock out job is best when a phobic needs significant treatment quickly.

Various things over the last 35 years, current injury is hand injury requiring reconstructive surgery to get my hand working again as it should. Surgery will be done soon, I hope I can still look after the horses after the operatio? ;(

Did you get your back checked when it happened ? My daughter has just done the same thing and has fractured her verterbae. Even GP thought it was muscle etc, but sent for an x ray just to be sure. A little shocked to say the least as she came off from standstill, and must have scrapped the arena fence.

Ive never broken anything in over 30 years of riding ! Daughter has :

broken collar bone twice
broken arm
Kicked in head
Just fractured vertebrae

I am now trying to convince her to give up, as i worry whats next to break.

I managed to escape injury free until 5 years ago when I fell off and got dragged.

Unbeknown to me, I had suffered a whiplash injury. Although it was painful, it wasn't unbearable but it got to the point where I couldn't lift my head off the pillow in the morning, I had to roll out of bed :(. It was at that point I went to the doctor.
8 months of physio later, I have exercises that can help minimise the pain and the chronic migraines I get are now controlled with daily medication.

Hopefully GW, I won't be beating your list!!

Broken right little finger - bronc'ed off landing on a showjump wing

Broken right wrist - horse and i parted company when he ran out at third element of triple show jumping and i made school boy error of putting my arm out to break fall :o

Broken right collar bone - knocked flying by horse galloping through me rather than past me in field

Ohh - collar bone and back injuries scare me the most... at least with leg stuff you can get comfortable.. and scoot around on your bum ! getting a bit old for sliding down stairs on bum - but it is fun when your leg is almost better and breaks up the fat ! lol

The pelvis is showing its old injury on this current break and the ankle on the left isnt quite as strong as it was in previous years - but i am glad i am not the only one that keeps on going ! - but i have been around horses for over 40 years - so i suppose my list isnt too bad ?

Quirky - trust me I am not competing - i am just so fed up with being confined to quarters -

Wow - that's a huge list of injuries. I have been relatively lucky, but my old boss refused to pay me if I had a horse related injury. Although I only had 2 days off due to a back injury and one day when I broke my finger in 5 places (I jumped; horse didn't and I stupidly kept hold of the reins).

I can understand your employers pov as every time we are off they have to a) pay us and b) cover our work so with so much time off due to 'leisure' injuries I can understand that they are getting peed off!

Broken nose X 3
Broken fingers X 5
Amputated fingers X3
Broken wrist
Broken arm
Several broken ribs and toes.

And people ask me why i still have the beast, after this mornings decision to not catch I don't know my self!!

I had one fall in 15 months of riding and broke my collarbone. I've promised myself that I will give up riding if I have two more breakages..honest:) Meanwhile I'm doing my best to reduce further damage by wearing my body protector..

Gingerwitch..that's a lot of serious breakages:eek: how is your leg feeling now?

I'm amazed at the amount of people I know who ride that have not broken anything... Me on the other hand...

Collarbone
Nose
Ankle ligaments (who knew throwing in a short stride before a fence was so dangerous! Jarred my leg so bad, pain worse than most of the breaks)
2 fingers
3 toes
Knuckle
Wrist (particularly badly, rebroken to heal)
Concussions

To be fair I stopped riding for a good 10 years otherwise it would be way worse!

As a direct result of horses:

Broken knees, ankles, fractured hips - horse bolting on hack thankfully close to home.

Fractured jaw x1 broken Jaw x1 - same horse from a kick under the chin, riding lesson / stable

Broken big and second toe on right foot - same horse as above stable

All my fingers broken - jumping

Broken back - Fall going down ditch that wasn't there the week before - hacking

Damaged coccyx - from landing squarely on my bum on concrete after a fall thanks to a lorry beeping its horn then slamming on the air breaks! - Racehorse exercising.

Indirect as a result of horses:

Shotgun accident

semi drowning in bath of soaking sugar beet

Add in the numerous bumps and bruises, cracked rib which I don't count as it happens so easily is silly. Accidents happen the vast majority of mine were at a commercial stables but also from one of my own who was lethal the first few years.

blimey @ this thread  and i thought MY injuries were bad :p

i think usernamepending and gingerwitch share joint prize for the worst so far although others have suffered horrifying injuries and breaks described also

..but 3 amputated fingers ?! :(

Good grief, you are the bionic woman !! and your still riding !

If we are adding indirect, another for my daughter, she fell onto a wasps nest asfter being pushed by a horse.

Got stung around 30 times. That was truly the most frightening. even though she had jodphurs and boots, they still got to her feet, bra etc etc:(

Horseloaner - i have just burst out laughing - that one really made me laugh sorry - half drowning in sugar beet !

The broken leg is not too bad - badly swollen but that is because i tried to go into work on Thursday - its the rest of me, and i am shocked that my mobility is not what it was - this could be age related, or the fact I am fatter than i have ever been before.

I have only been at this job since July - and the last two big injuries I did go to work for the majority of the time in plaster - or i worked from home - but the gaffer has horses - so thats probably why i am getting the pressure.

Never pee off an angry mentally unstable 16yr old when your 10 by riding a horse thats her favorite when shes on holiday despite it NOT being her horse... funniest thing looking back is I was rescued by a man dressed as a Knight in Shining Armour! :D

Still looking but hes having some lessons on my sisters horse and will have a go on his grannies when we go to see them at Christmas. Hubby thinks buy in spring but looking now because they tend to be a bit better value in winter when the kids at school can't riding in the evenings. I'd like to loan again as they outgrow so quickly but the right pony hasn't come along and am a bit wary after our last experience.

1992 - Broken toe - got jumped on by the Arab.

1992 - Permanent lump on leg from falling off and being stood on.

1994 - Almost tore thumb off from falling off and being stood on.

1996 - Broken ribs.
Went blind for a while - concussion (fell off - no hat :o)

2012 - Fractured tooth with ongoing dental work - slipped on the ice at
yard and bounced my face off the barrel of linseed I was carrying :o.

I am pretty lucky most of my injuries have been minor bumps and bruises over the years.

You lot are Hard Core
